The Legendary Cat
« on: December 30, 2007, 11:40:00 pm »

Alright, I've finished my last dwarven engineering project(a dining room surrounded on all four sides by waterfalls with a functioning well in each corner), and now taking notes for the next.

Behold the unveiled (beta-)plans for....The Legendary Cat Fortress.

I want to build a giant statue of a cat standing astride a river or stream, with its head lowered to lap at the water. This behemoth will be large enough to house and occupy all my dwarves.

Intended Features:

Each Toe armed with Weapon Traps.
Tongue Platform over the river for Fisherdwarves.
Tail Watchtower at twice the altitude of the mid-Torso.
Refuse Dump below the Tail.
Waterfall gushing from below the Refuse Dump.
5-level torso for Kitchen/Workshop/Accommodation/Military/Recreation floors.
Earx2/Eyex2/Brainx1/Nosex1 accommodation for Nobles.

Anything else I should include? At the moment I'm going to divide the legs into two main entrances(front legs---bridging the river/stream) and depot ramps/pumping system for the back legs.

Going to build on a flat plain....any recommendations for building material? stone, wood or glass?

Sounds cool.  How about black glass with emeralds for eyes?

Glass eyes, claws and other features. The rest of the cat made entirely of obsidian (black cats ftw) make sure to jewel the eyes with gemstones (windows for the nobles, and possible use the tounge with a pump system for your water intake rather than just fishing (cause that would be awesome).

Can't think of anything else atm cause I'm at work, will check again when I get home. Awesome idea.

Very ambitious.  I pity your hands though, with all that rewalling and designing...  Unless you manage to carve it all out.

Based on your design points, I submit that the fortress should be built on top of a sandy plain.

Tongue as water-source via pumps? Check!
Eye-Windows? Check!

Done a little initial searching for a site...need a relatively straight river(I can always channel out small imperfections)and a flat z-plain. Preferably without an aquifier and with magma to ease the work.

Wondering if glass or obsidian would be the easier building block, if I only wanted to use one substance. I could make an underground obsidian field if I have a magma vent...but it might be just as easy to set up glass production under the same circumstances.

You could make the cat out of iron. Or steel.

.. Or Coal.

I really want to make an area out of ashes.  I really, really want to do that.

I think his tongue should be a bridge as well, and be the main entrance. His jaw should be lined with death, as well... The bridge won't go up to keep them out, but to keep them in while traps and marksman (fortifications) chew them up.

This sounds awesome. Maybe make menacing spikes for it's teeth...steel menacing spikes.

I like the idea of the mouth becoming the main entrance, via ramps to also allow a trade depot in its throat.

If I make the water pumping INSIDE the tongue, and the entrance/fisherdwarf platform UPON the tongue, that should hopefully work without making the mouth/tongue too excessively large.

Which leaves the question of what to do with the legs, and for that matter the upright tail(besides the watchtower at the apex).

I could arrange for some wells plunging down through one or both upright hind legs, and perhaps some cheap accomodation squeezed into the tail. Front legs will be bent seeing as the cat is crouching over the water...any suggestions?

You might consider a calico or tabby coloration if you don't care for straight black.  Don't forget some menacing whisker-spikes near the nose.  For the legs - how about long narrow archery ranges?

Would you mind posting some pictures of this design?  I'm curious to see how you pulled it off.
