I tend to do medium worlds with everything on the default except minerals I put on the second highest setting.

I tend to use the advanced world generation, start with a small region, crank up Minerals, Megabeasts and Secrets. Then i decide how much z-levels i want above the Caverns, and how many Caverns i want (most of the times i stick with 1 cavern)!
Standard Generated worlds tend to be fine, but after the learning curve has ended, you may want to look into advanced world gerneration!
Good place to start is the Worldgen Cookbook thread http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=158646.0

Nah, I already got past it. Might take a look into that.

Almost always custom pre-set value worlds. Usually pocket, 1 each of strong elven/goblin/human civ with 1 major site facing the embark area each, medium to long history, almost entirely savage, no megabeasts and 500 mineral scarcity. Lots of exceptions for each of those ('cept savagery), though.

@Dainz: I'd recommend going for wiki article first if one wants to learn more =P

I have been doing large worlds with high sites, civs and minerals and medium history recently.

I use a custom advanced world generation tuned for patchwork biomes.  Small world, ridiculous amount of beasts, high savagery, deep z's.  Other things I vary upon whim/plan, but often use minerals everywhere and very short history.

Advanced worldgen. Medium sized region, one internal ocean, double beasts, titans, caves, night creature types, etc, set to stop worldgen at 20% dead beasts. Usually comes in at 200-400 years.

Also (beyond worldgen settings) limit dwarves to 2 civs as you often end up in a world with one struggling civ and one strong empire which makes for a nice story. Also try to boost the number of histfigs as much as possible. Oh, and make sure there's loads and loads of kobold civs.

I tend to make large worlds (I know it's more space than I'd ever use but that's part of the beauty IMO) with short histories, a high number of civs, high savagery, a high beast pop, and minerals everywhere. Still getting the hang of the custom parameters.

Oh, I'm new to the community by the way. You don't seem to have a welcome thread for newcomers, so I guess I'll just say hello here. XD

I certainly hope so. Been playing the game for a few months now and I really enjoy it (even if I'm still not past the learning curve lmao). DF is such a unique, innovative and ambitious project, and I look forward to seeing it continue to grow and develop now that I'm an active member of its fandom.

Custom settings. Stop history when 15,000 historical figures reached. Optimised for shallow worlds while still having all three caverns and the rest. Lots of megabeasts, no titans. Medium region.

Those are the base setting I've used time and time again. From there I've tried to make ice worlds, desert worlds, and mountainous worlds with many narrow valleys. Or just very default temperate worlds.

I always use advanced world parameters.

100 year world gen - less years less entities more FPS
Small Continent - No large oceans taking up space
Reveal Caves
1000-1500 mineral scarcity - (Between scarce and frequent)
Then I usually tone down the large evil and good areas because those are pretty ridiculous default.
Sprinkle in a couple more civs for good measure

Haha, it's almost the opposite for me. :-)

It varies, but I tend towards larger map sizes, longer history, low to medium civs, very low sites, low beasts, medium savagery and sparse minerals.

And hi PlumpHelmetMan! I am new as well.  :)
