It'd probably work better with the code burned into a FPGA or something to do it all in hardware.

But anyway, if you really want DF on the psp writing a VNC client (if there isn't one) is about the only way.  Good luck finding enough buttons to play it though.

Of course, the display and input code in Dwarf Fortress is, well... minimal. It would certainly be possible to develop a portable Dwarf Fortress client for either the PSP or the DS that would communicate back to your computer over the network and use it to update the world. All you would need is a static IP address.

I do DS homebrew as a hobby, and if I didn't have about 1000 other projects going on maybe I'd port Kobold Quest. If anybody else feels like doing it and wants some pointers let me know.

After we get at least beta, we will be able to speak about port. =)

Maybe the psp with only 333 Mhz isnt enougth for DF but Apples Iphone has an Arm1176 Chip with 840-MHz (Acording to this Article (german)) and 128MB DRAM.

This should be enought for creating a pocket World or mabe something a little bit biger. Ha maybe the Mac version of DF would somehow run on the Iphone by now. a 3*3 fortress with low Zīs and 100 Dwarfes wouldnt drop below the 30 Fps if we are lucky.

I have a 2 gig computer with 514 megs of ram... I can hardly run above 15 FPS at around 40 to 50 dwarves.

Yet, you expect a 833 mhz with 128 megs of ram to be able to run 100 dwarves on a 3x3 site at around 30 FPS?

100 Dwarfes - Amd 1,2 GHZ 256MB-Ram, it runs and runs and runs just fine. I have less civs, no wether and a 3x3 Spot in a relativ flat Waste max(in initfile) FPS at 30.

If you are using "Vista" it grabs the a half of the Ram.

Next thing is i cancel all not needed Tasks if im Playing besides Winamp.

On my old machin it runs totaly fine with 100 Dwarfes.

A huge chunk of Time and Ram wasting is done for the the other civs i think also wether and the much Zs are killing. If you set the prioryti of DF to highest it would run (maybe) faster too.

Apple Hardware is by the way much more optimized as a normal PC. 30 FPS could be very optimistic but problems are there to be solved and most problems are solved by optimists.

The PSP can handle DF. You just can't have very many dwarfs or a large world. The new PSPs have 64 mb RAM and speedy little processors.

Wouldn't be surprised, given what people say about it.

That would explain a lot.

EDIT:
Is there something on my computer that will tell me how much RAM is being used?

A dedicated device would have the advantage (over a PC) of not having to devote memory and CPU to the operating system. Combined with hardware/software optimization, this could make a handheld device feasible.

fenrir: right click your start bar and select 'task manager'. look in the performance tab for various cpu/mem stats.
