Start by asking around about the mage.

Yep, as ever, I bestow upon Glass the expected +1
I'm gonna say we go with whatever Glass's idea is.

Why bother? Whatever this is, it can't be too important, so go do the bare minimum that will satisfy Mother Cat. Maybe forge some evidence that say it's a trap so you don't have to deal with it. Honestly, thievin' is easier than this prophecy nonsense, and probably pays better.

You can't just choose "apathy" as you alignment and not commit to it. ;)
Plus it's fun to jump off of the story's rails at first opportunity. Our destiny might still catch us, but it will have to try a bit harder than that!

Jobs are all well and good, but you’re perfectly fine with thieving. If a mage wanted a thief, chances are that it would be an adventure, and adventures may be profitable but they always involve way too much effort.

You doubt you could just forge a random evidence. This smelled like a test, and Mother Cat probably already investigated the mage. This meant you have to make something up that fit with the evidence at hand.

Mages are dangerous people, and stealing from them was the height of folly. However, mages are your specialty, and this one wasn't that hard to crack. She stayed in a tavern in the city, and you took a chance to sneak in while she was away. You made some counterspells to slip through the wards, and looked through her belongings. All mages kept a journal. Apparently, it had something to do with mental discipline. It also made them hilariously easy to spy on.

Time was a premium, so you just skimmed through the tome. Her business here had something to do with adventuring, you confirmed. Later, you thought up of story about a plan to sacrifice a thief to stop some ancient entity from awakening. It was ridiculous and melodramatic, but mages were ridiculous and melodramatic.

Do you do anything else to help build your case?

Head to the library and find a book of unresolved prophecies. These things are left undone all the time, so there's surely something in there that fits our description.
