"If I had to guess, it's similar to those magic items that boost your abilities." Cullen folded his arms across his chest as if in deep consideration.
"I'll keep that in mind. You are dismissed; however be prepared to leave within the hour. There's much that needs to reach the Emperor's ears as soon as possible."
After Cullen's conversation with Leon, he clanked back towards the villagers who hadn't really done anything under Mydis' watch since Leon left. He looked at Dain's bracelet and Elanore's stave.
"You must have realized it by now, but you're both in possession of stolen goods. Furthermore, one of you was actively apart of the rebellion and the other is the daughter of the mayor who submitted to and helped supply the rebellion, regardless of threats from said rebellion."He turned to directly address Dain who gulped in response to what he thought was to come next.
"If it weren't for Leon vouching for you, or were I any other General, you would have been gutted right about now. However, I can see that the both of you are worth more to this country alive rather than dead. As of now, you are under my command; I will sort out everything regarding your enlistments and assignments. You are dismissed!" Cullen began to head off, presumably to question the mayor, but Dain called out to him and he stopped in his tracks.
"S-Sir! Not to question you, but why are you sparing us?""Why?" Cullen grew silent for a moment.
"Because this country needs people like you. People willing to face their mistakes and fight to correct them."Because there are a great many who aren't.~Chapter 1: In The Dead Of Winter~
Two months had passed since Cullen and his squad reported back from the now non-existent village. The late fall had progressed into the middle of winter, a terrible time for a rebellion. With Captain Greiton's continued absence the two squads were joined together, partially out of convenience, partially out of a desire to limit who knew about the rebels' strange magic. The mayor was unable to provide much more than what was already apparent in the letter Leon had discovered; other than that whoever it was that had been killed in his household was not the leader of the rebels. This gave the squad, and all of Astrasia, nothing to do except wait. And wait. Until finally one of the hotly contested Thalian border towns noted in its monthly report suspicious vandalism and a man named Baires supposedly at the head of it. Finally with some sort of lead, the squad was mobilized; however this time without General Cullen. Days before the report he had been assigned to an Eslanan border village with no explanation given. The squad was to meet their new leader at the town and begin investigations under his command.
Southern Astrasia, as it had always been in the past, was covered in a layer of snow this time of year. And, while it was a spectacular sight to behold, there was work to be done; namely, marching. Having set out from the capital roughly a week ago, the border town was finally within a day's travel of camp. However, the squad's route lead them dangerously close to the Astrasia Thalis border; yet soldiers tasked with manning the forts and patrolling the roads were nowhere to be found. Although aware that it could possibly be a trap, they cannot deny that an investigation could yield information about potential rebel activity.
