Those that are perceptive, or more accurately bothered to look, could see Hallbjorn's utter disgust at Matt's plan.

:"Um, Matt, I-- I don't know about that, it kind of... it goes against the point of the brave and noble men and women of the glorious Astrasian military defending it, doesn't it...?"
Kristijan half-stuttered his hesitance about Matt's plan, but soon found his attention grabbed.
:"Alana! I'll help you!"
And he promptly charged in her direction.
14, 8, whack at the Knight with my... wooden sword, damn, can't Kristijan get something from the actual armory?

Matt waved off Kris's concerns with the back of his hand.

"Every major advancement in history has come about through advances in war capabilities. Imagine a time when humans no longer have to do menial tasks and can relegate it all to homunculi and other summoned creations! Why, there may even come a time when wars need not be fought by humans at all - when we have advanced sufficiently of course - and we can cease these petty squabbles over territory, these pointless wastes of human life."

[SOLDIER First]

”Let me help you with that, Matthias. I’d like to see some of this research myself when I get the chance.”

[Taricus]

"And what, let those damned Ilimese get away with all the shit they've done? Like hell, we'd just turn that stuff against them and wipe them out once and for all!

Though it'd be far wiser to rely on technology for that. A better way of telling Ilim where magic can go."

[SeriousConcentrate]

"Of course! Why, with sufficient advances, we could even one day bring Astrasia to such a level that it rivals Ilum in magical knowledge! Won't that be something?"

Matt turned to his younger brother.

"Oh, Ilum's not so bad. I grew up there, after all."

Now entangled in combat with the pegasus riding thing, Kristijan took the opportunity to shout back in the direction of the brothers.
:""But --hyah!-- doesn't that kind of... contradict what Astrasia is about? You know... the legions of the formidable soldiers who defeat the foes of Astrasia and bear the weight of the Emperor's accomplishments to help support the country's glory? Using people's --hah!-- bodies instead, it just doesn't... it doesn't seem like it fits-- hyah!"

[SeriousConcentrate]

"Are you still hung up on the 'undead' misconception? I've already been corrected that these are products of conjuration, not necromancy."

[SOLDIER First]

”These aren’t zombies. These are... something else. They’re magical, and they don’t require any corpses to make. I assume. Got it?”

"_{Who gives an honest shit about wars you didn't fight in against people you've never met.} I do have to agree with Matt on the point about not having to send soldiers to die. (Even if using dead things would be disgusting.) I mean, my family is all farmers but if my mom or dad died I'd be broken up about it. Or even worse, if my sister died..."
Hallbjorn frowns deeply as he trails off.

"The complaint still holds true on that basis though Matt, Though it'd be folly to say that the equipment those soldiers use wouldn't improve as society does. Or the logistics of maintaining an army for that matter."

[SeriousConcentrate]

"If we have sufficiently advanced magical arms and armor we wouldn't even need to arm these troops with forged metal. Why use a sword of steel when one could wield a sword made of pure light magic?"

[Powder Miner]

:"Oh, right, you were talking about this guy, not the other... well, that's not as bad, but... I still think it should be us Astrasians holding the line and all. My mom and dad are soldiers, and they've contributed bravely. Met each other fighting by each other's sides! It's... that's how Astrasia is and should be, you know?"

Hallbjorn cringes a little at that.
Should it though? We wouldn't have problems with rebellions if it was right...

Matt seemed genuinely confused.

"I don't follow. But then I've never liked that line of logic, that 'I would die for this, that, or the other thing' mentality. If you love your country wouldn't you want to live for it, to spend every moment bettering it? Why would you waste your life fighting when you could be spending that time elevating it to unheard-of heights? New ideas, new constructions that show Astrasian superiority? Isn't that, in itself, more of a victory than making the fools of another country taint the soil with their blood?"
