The captain hung his head low and pointed towards the loot.
Some time later the bigger ship set course forward quite a bit lighter while in Ethan's ship there was now several chests and bags full of valuable stuff. Discounting the amount that would go to the Alvadan treasury, it would still leave quite the amount for the crew to enjoy.

Claude not only helped haul the booty back into their ship, he started to add the loot's specifics to his notebook almost as soon as he got his eyes on it. He quickly showed why he was far better as a number-cracking record-keeper than as a swordsman.

"Not bad, not bad. The Domirians didn't do any proper tagging but I can fix that. Even after discounting the Admiralty's share, there is a good amount of gold and valuables left. I wonder if we could negotiate a better deal with the officials..."


Then he remembered Lavinia's comment about the orb. He wasn't a jeweler, but he could probably tell what kind of gem it was and its rough market value.

"Ashlyn, do you have the orb the old mage was cradling? I want to appraise it."

[I_Like_Pi]

Ashlyn took out the orb and showed it to Claude.

"Yeah, it's right here."

[Caellath]

"Thanks. Let me take a closer look..."

Claude took the orb from Ashlyn's hands and started to study it, running his fingers over its surface to search for any cracks, faults or imperfections, raising it above his head and against the sun, and looking into it to discern any sign of impurities. After a few minutes, the swordsman sighed.

"This doesn't look like glass or crystal. It also does not look like a particularly big gem. It might be magical, so Lysander might have a better idea. Lysander?"

Lysander reached out and took the orb, running a hand over it before sending a slight jolt of magic into it like he might for his healing staff. Eventually, he shook his head.

"It has some sort of magic signature to it, but nothing like I've seen before to be honest. I can't tell you anything more than that."

[Haspen]

Ethan listened to the conversation and then rubbed his nose.

"So, it's a mysterious magical jewel, huh. Good riddance; we can sail to Port of Di to ask the local scholar, he has quite a reputation for identifying magical stuff. Plus, we haven't been in Pleiades for a while now."

[Caellath]

"Since it doesn't look like any precious gem and its value is uncertain, this doesn't fall within the percentage to be claimed by the Admiralty. It'll be a fortunate happening if we discover it to be very valuable after the officials' share has been taken care of." Claude commented with a smile.

~~Chapter 1: Land Rats~~

The Blackbones was a fast ship, so it only took two days to go to the Port of Di. There, more flagless ships were standing next to Alvadan military ships and various merchant vessels. The Port seemed quiet, but it was only a facade until fate revealed what was coming for Ethan and the rest.

Ethan and his crew watched as the Admiralty clerk and several Alvadan soldiers took their share of the loot. Now that that was done, they were free to set sail again or wander around the port city of Di.

And find out what the mystery orb was.

[Haspen]

"Okay, Lysander, grab the orb, take Claude as bodyguard and visit the scholar. He has his house up on the hill near the Old Gods' Temple. Rest of you, go check for some good deals on the market."

Ethan goes to a blacksmith or some sort to browse axe selection if there's any.

[Gaterhyme]

Lavinia shrugged, looking somewhat amused. Claude was the bodyguard? And she was the one to go to market?

She glanced at Ashlyn once Ethan left.

"Are you any good at haggling, or am I missing something?"

[Caellath]

Not letting Claude deal with the purchases was a bit strange, but maybe the others would just check prices and report. Hopefully. He gave Lavinia and Ashlyn a slightly confused glance.

"Let's go and see that scholar, Lysander."

[I_Like_Pi]

"Actually, Captain I still have the-" she tried to finish but Ethan had alreadly skedaddled.

"I guess I'm tagging along with you guys. Unless you want to go do the shopping Claude. I know you like to keep track of all our expenditures."

[Gaterhyme]

"Fine with me. Oh, and - if you hear about a brawl later, I didn't start it."

Ethan found a blacksmith dealing in all types of weapons- except bows apparently. He mostly worked the cheap iron stuff that the privateers used on their frequent raids.

Lysander, Claude and Ashlyn went up to the hill, where lone and humble house resided across the street from the Temple.
