"Ha!"

Lavinia took a drink of her mead as well, still halfheartedly scanning the room for a potential contender. She wasn't much for thinking at length, but now that they'd bothered with the past, she was tempted to bother with the future. After this end-of-the-world business. After Ethan became an old man with a long beard and retired from privateering. Or just... when they all went their separate ways, sooner or later. She decided to leave it vague.

"I forget if I've asked - you plan on doing anything with those numbers of yours after all this?"

[Caellath]

"I did work exclusively with numbers and face-to-face dealing before, but that career was kind of spoiled for me, at least for a while. I need to make sure I can annihilate a whole crew of pirates before I go back into business. "

But truth be told, as he grew stronger Claude started to consider the plight of those who didn't have his luck. He survived his brush with death and used his hard-earned gold to learn swordfighting, purchase armor and join Ethan's crew. Most people didn't get that kind of turn in their lives, they most likely either died or sucked up to the brutes with weapons.

[Gaterhyme]

"What, all by yourself? We'd better step up our competition, then."

Not that she remembered what the score was anymore. Too many mulligans.

[Caellath]

"We need a good, straightforward competition without ballistae shooting at us while goons mob us from all sides. If the next bunch of enemies could form two orderly lines and come at us, that'd be perfect."

[Gaterhyme]

"If only. But you know the bureaucrat's solution wouldn't be worth the challenge, anyway."

[Caellath]

"I guess that's right. But unfair competition and all. The last time I won but you were so deep into enemies you spent most of the time being kicked into the deck."

[Gaterhyme]

"Pff. I've just got to train more, that's all." Always a next step, always a path to getting better. Sometimes she hit a plateau, but she always broke through.

She took another draught of the mead before continuing.

"That's how fighting is. Sometimes they gang up on you. We only wrote off the fights where one of us couldn't even reach them."

[Caellath]

"I've been training to dodge more and drop less, too. We should fight back-to-back more, though, given the opportunity. Sticking close to you makes me feel more driven to win."

[Gaterhyme]

"You'll just get front row seats to getting showed up."

"But sure." They could test this out for sure if there was a fight going on... but no. No challenging fights in sight, just the now-empty mug in her hand. "You want another? Or should we head back?"

[Caellath]

Claude gave another look around and gestured to the barman.

"We might as well drink another one since we aren't getting any good brawls out of this. Heh, and I was the one supposed to be responsible and rein you in."

[Gaterhyme]

"Hey, I know what I'm doing." Besides looking for a fight, that was. She was the first mate, and for what little it often mattered, she still made sure to keep that in mind.

"Seems like you ought to have gone and tried to rein in the others from how much excitement we've been getting. Then again, I don't expect they've gotten up to much."

And at least the company wasn't bad. They ought to have brought in a couple others. Lysander and Ashlyn, maybe - it'd been some time since it'd just been the four of them.

[Caellath]

"Yeah, I know. And maybe Lysander and Ashlyn are up to something together. You never know."

"How about your plans for the future? Are you planning on being a privateer until you die?"

[Gaterhyme]

Lavinia shrugged. There was a pause. She received her second mug of mead.

"I guess not. I'd always figured I'd move on eventually, when I'd seen everything I felt there was to see in this line of work. There's still more inland, you know?"

"And who knows, Ethan could get rich off saving the world and retire."

[Caellath]

"Yeah, inland..." Claude stared at Lavinia for a few seconds.

"Just don't leave me behind before I can show you just what a sound defeat looks like."

[Praefectus Screptum]

As the crew scattered around to look for something to do, Vortai simply sat on a crate, opened his book and proceeded to read.
"Hmm. I wonder..."
It has been quite a while since he put his feet in a desert, and even with the very hostile ambient he missed it. Perhaps they will pass close to a desert next time, who knows!
"....I probably should get a map at this point."
