Claude was a bit disappointed he only managed to cut down one enemy before they retreated, but that likely the best outcome for the rookies' health. Until they could bag both the remaining foes they'd probably take down at least one member of the militia.

"You're welcome, but you all should return. There's worried people waiting for you back there." Claude told the militiamen before turning his attention to Lavinia.

"If he uses it in battle while under our service then it isn't taken from his pay, no. If he wants to hoard it for research then it'll have to be paid for, with a proportional discount on his pay based on how intact the tome is. And it looks like we're evenly matched."

The mage listened idly as he flipped through the tome with surprising speed, eyes browsing the text and what notes might have been scribbled in the margins, muttering something to himself. Before long he shut the tome with one hand and in his opposite one ignited a small flame which he inspected. Twas a pure scarlet conflagration that seemed to burn with a near unnatural light, a far cry from the usual crimson and orange blooms he'd been conjuring up until then.

"Hoard for research? Ha! If only I ever had the luxury of developing such a habit. No, you misunderstand my friend, Tomes are just a means to an end for me. I just wanted to see how the old bastard might've gotten his flames to linger like that, but it turns out the secret to his trick was nothing but a disappointment... this thing is basically just a standard fire tome that's had a few tweaks made to the spell structure in one particular place. Regardless, If you want me to treat the rest of these scum to a slow, agonizing death with it, then say no more. I make sure my clients always get their money's worth."

Maria barely had the time to scream when magic flew her way before. Even now, she was still visibly terrified, having a bit of trouble getting back up on her startled horse. She knew she would have to face it, she did. Didn't make it any less terrifying. The healing magic helped the pain, at least.

  "T-thank you..."

  Of all the things to be afraid of as a mercenary... Just great...
