Gawen rode from behind Claude up to Zaku and the relentless barrage began. Zaku couldn't do anything until eventually the lance pierced the mage's armor and his body.

Zaku's last words carried through the House's communication system. Immediately after, the rest of the cultists began committing suicide one after the other without any semblance of doubt.

Soon there was nothing but silence. Gawen picked up two things from Zaku's body: a strange rune, and a strange disc.

[Chevaleresse]

"Rot in hell, the lot of you." She wiped her lance on an unbloodied portion of Zaku's corpse after sliding off her horse. A brief search of his body unveiled yet more strange treasures.


"Amberly, Fer, do you recognize these?"

[Caellath]

"Ugh, disgusting fanatics." Claude groaned, propping himself up by using the scabbard of one of his swords for support.

[Praefectus Screptum]

"Cowards."

[Sirus]

Amberly covered her mouth and fought down the urge to be sick. The cultists' deaths didn't really bother her; the original plan had been to fight them all off, after all. It was the sheer senselessness and suddenness of the mass suicide that upset the nun. Once she was reasonably certain that her lunch was going to stay down, she responded to Gawen's inquiry.

: "I...I don't know. Give me a moment to study them, please."

[Solymr]

Carmen stepped over the cultist corpses into the room and looked over at Gawen.

: Did you find anything resembling a key? We should open that vault as soon as possible.

[Chevaleresse]

"Not unless this disc is one." She handed the item in question to Amberly. "We should search the room for it while someone checks on the Abbess. Perhaps she was able to free herself."

[Sirus]

Amberly examined the objects carefully.

: "Hmm. I'm afraid I have never seen a disc like this this one before. I suppose it could be a key of some kind, but it doesn't really resemble any keys I'm familiar with. This rune, on the other hand, is a component on a sealing spell. There was a similar rune on the door that the Captain smashed down. It isn't normally placed on small handheld objects, though. Mostly on doors or lockboxes or similar things..."

Fer shook his head, bringing himself to a standing position and slowly weaved a combination of basic first aid and of Memory Magic to get himself back to his feet.
:"They're just absolute lunatics... what the- what the hell was all of this about? I mean... it has something to do with "Narius", Zaku mentioned he was taking orders, and he knew who Ethan was but... how deep does this go? Are these guys just throw-away pawns or is this entire usurpation just this deeply insane?"

Left still shaking his head, ultimately Fer sighed.
:"I hope Xanti made it through all of that alright. But I suspect he probably is, based on the ease of that Silence, earlier. Man, though... seeing him again in the middle of all of this. What a context. What a context..."

[Solymr]

: That will have to wait, I'm afraid.

From the hall, a group of scholars headed by Xanti closed in quickly. Carmen sheathed her weapon, but remained on guard.

: Fer, Vortai! What happened here? I was trying to talk down some people when we heard something through the speakers and then they started killing themselves. You certainly seem to have been keeping busy with them.

[Powder Miner]

:"With the suicides, I... barely understand what happened at all. I think that there was some sort of..." Memories of some of the invectives his brothers had used all those years ago with regards to Xanti's more mainline religious involvement flashed through his mind, and wincing slightly at the memory, Fer chose his words carefully. "fringe sect or something that's driving them. Well, uh, I guess that's stating the obvious, but this "Atan" thing is completely new to us too."
:"I think they're almost certainly involved with the usurper at the capital (and, uh, that's sort of- there's sort of a lot involved there), but I can't figure out how much. They wanted us dead and were acting on orders there, but were they also trying to take over the House of Scholars for their own purposes...?"

"As far as we knew, we were just coming here to talk to the Abbess because we needed to find the Treasures again. We had them, or thought we did, and then they were in a way scattered by a guy pretending to be the long-lost prince. We were speaking with the Abbess, and the leader of these people made his move to try to shut all of that down." Maybe he wouldn't strictly mention that one of the true Treasures was in fact with the Abbess right now - it felt like that wasn't quite his place to bring up until she did.

There were personal matters too, and... agh, probably they would be brought up sooner or later, but for now the confusion over the current situation reigned supreme.
