Doubloon, if you aren't dead yet I figured it out! Arrange the symbols on the door in the order of 2, 3, 1.

It's actually quite fascinating, because the symbols don't represent numbers as such, but concepts. The second symbol represents a murder, the third image a gallows and a hanging, and the first the soul of the murderer dropping into the Underworld. Perhaps it has something to do with the necromancers you've been talking about.

...well wouldn't you just know it.

"FEAR, YE WHO HAVE ENTERED. ONLY A TRUE ALCHEMIST MAY UNLOCK THE GATES OF HERUD-?A.
TO ESCAPE THIS OUBLIETTE AND UNSEAL THE UPPER PATH, ALIGN THE WORLDS.

THE FIRST IS THE MOST NOBLE, UNSULLIED AND RESPLENDENT.
THE SECOND IS DULL, BUT BEARS A WEIGHT AND SOFTNESS OFT USED TO ADULTERATE THE FIRST.
THE THIRD IS SOFT, BUT HARDENS TO WAR WHEN IT TASTES ASH.
THE FOURTH AND THE FIFTH COMBINE, FIRST LOVE, THEN POWER, TO PRODUCE THE ALLOY OF ANCIENT DAYS.
THE SIXTH IS SWIFT, EVER-CHANGING, AND MIMICS THE SEVENTH UNTIL MOVED.
THE LAST REFLECTS THE LIGHT OF THE FIRST, A BRIGHT BUT COLOURLESS IMITATION."

Well, the last is the moon, the first is the sun, the fifth is likely Mars, the sixth is probably Mercury. Anyone got ideas for the rest? Ah, yes, and Venus is likely number four.

By the way, here's the key I found: ftq=the m=a fdgq=true mxotqyuef=alchemist k=y r=f b=p n=b i=w w=k s=g

Hah, something I know! Those are the alchemy symbols for metals! Learn a thing or two when your brother's a smith and your sister's an apothecary! Though, yes, fairly sure they do match up to planets.

Anyhow, first is gold, second is probably lead, not sure about the third, fourth & fifth are tin and copper, sixth is mercury, and seventh is silver.
By eliminating, third has to be iron. I think.

Anyhow, the translations you all got worked! I'm in this big chamber, lit up by glowing moss, and... weird pools of liquid. Some just seem like regular water or oil or such, but others... I mean acid, magma, and other crazy liquids.

Ah, yes, the third being iron makes sense. You need ash to make it into steel, after all.
Ah, wait... how do we "align the worlds"?

Weight maybe? Or perhaps those funny numbers the DwarfHelmetin fortress was always going on about... you know, the ones that blew the top off a mountain and turned part of the desert to sand. Never worked out how they pulled that one off.

Hold on. In terms of planetary analogues, you get Sun, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon. And according to the Telluric mysteries, the symbols for those are... just a minute...

So that means you have to press Middle, Bottom Left, Top Right, Top Left, Bottom Right, Bottom, Top. Oh wait, we're dealing with a troll here.

PRESS THE STONES LIKE DIS:

          4       7      3
                   1
          2        6     5

IN THAT ORDER.

I suppose it's a wonder the creature can write at all.

You know this sort of reminds me of the dark metallurgist Bethelzor. Great one for puzzles, really nice guy. Actually, he did tend to drop people into boiling metal from time to time, but you could really open up to him, you know? Seems a bit straigtforward though... Bethelzor always liked to put in a nasty twist at the end of the easy ones. He was a practical joker. I usually let a friend solve the puzzles first. Safer that way, you could be sure the answer wasn't an extract from the Book of Ur-Shuggureth the Devourer of Minds. Anyway, that was one less friend I had.

Hey, guys! A passage just opened up, and I think it leads up to the surface! Anyway, there are two heavy stone doors in the passage. I opened one up, and it had a chest full of silver and gems! I haven't opened the other one yet, it's a bit stuck in the frame, and I can't force it open.

Got a hammer and chisel? With time, you could break the thing to more manageable pieces.
Actually, since you're not trying to sculpt anything specific, a sufficiently hard hammer strike should be fine in and of itself.

Oh no, I'm not going to much more today. I'm nearly out of lantern oil and ink! I'm heading up to the surface, I'll mark the entrance on my map, wedge it open, hide it or whatever, then head into Nodord and organize a party. Anybody in Nodord, meet up at the Fire & Steel Smithy to go out adventuring! I'll pay you, but we can work it out in person.

Hmm...I'm a little far away to get there on foot. However, I can get in touch with a psion I know. She can give me a dimensional door straight to Nodrod...assuming anyone wants me there.

Speaking of payment by the way, that Comprehend Languages scroll I used costs 25 gold pieces in components to make (not even talking about the sale price). You don't have to pay for it, Doubloon, but it would be appreciated.
