May I just ask what you all are doing talking through this ancient scroll? I imagine such a priceless artifact should be put to a more useful task than idle chitchat.

I wouldn't call these priceless seeing how most of us got one without even trying, and Acter can easily create more.

Then why was it being worshiped? (Or that's my best guess. Honestly, I'm not even sure that it's a temple we're excavating.)

Perhaps a race with no understanding of magic thought the scroll was divine in nature. Assuming it is, in fact, a temple.

Temple or no, I've already lost more employees (and, later, skilled adventurers) simply digging to the third floor of this place to magical traps. (This scroll was, incidentally, hung above what looked like an altar located in an entry hall. We're below it now, but there's been nothing else of note, besides the traps.)  Crude stuff, so probably a limited understanding of it, but effective.

Hmn? I'm not sure how it would have gotten there. If you're talking about the place I think you're talking about, I just kinda put it down on a shelf somewhere.

Hmm. Looking at it with that perspective, they may've also used it as a light source? It can certainly be bright enough for it. So very odd.

But it's only ten years old or so! Listen: it must have been moved, and therefore, there must be something living in the place you're looking through.

Ten? I was assured it was at least a century old... Bah. I simply hope it's someone's scroll, and not something. Someones can be reasoned with about why we're digging up their home, I hope.

Well, I can tell you that the scroll isn't sentient, at least.

That's probably good news; I've had trouble with plotting parchments some time ago. For them moment, excavation has halted while we wait for the homeowner(?) to make an appearance. So far, we've uncovered the fourth basement; I do hope the residents will be amicable. I'll inform you as to who got a hold of your scroll should they appear.

Please present this scroll to the second sub-ancillary scribe of the Second Vault of the Third Bank of the Fourth Estate, to claim your payment totaling five Emennee gold drachma.

If you can find him, that is. You don't have enough money to bribe your way down there.
Next time, don't you dare try telling me to pay with coin. I didn't become a member of the Guard just so fools like you could act as if I'm just another customer.

Eh, what?

Are people using these things as receipts?

I'm starting to wonder if some (or all) of these scrolls were deactivated somehow, and are now reactivating. It would explain why roughly a decade passed before anyone discovered what they could do, and why some people are using them for receipts.

...or shopping lists.
