You head to the Grey Swan to meet up with Tom Cony. The Grey Swan is formed of three bare brick walls surrounding a central courtyard. A pair of huge oak doors open out into the courtyard, and beyond them there's a small straw-covered inside area where the ale draper tends to the casks. This area is kept open, but the patrons only tend to huddle in there when it rains or snows. As the weather is fair today, there are people drinking on the benches in the open air of the courtyard.

You notice two of the regulars, Old Lamprisado the nightwatchman and Miss Nancy Featherbrook, a young woman of independent means who claims she has the ear of the king's mistress. They're sitting near Tom Cony.

"Bene lightmans, Mr Pike," he says, welcoming you to the day. Over by the kegs, the ale draper calls out to ask you what you'll have.

1. "A pint of purl, not too much wormwood."
2. "A glass of sherry, if you would be so kind."
3. "Mine's a dram of cobbler's punch."
4. "Is it too early to start on the blue ruin?"
5. I'm not here for drinking.
6. "Give my friend another one of what he's drinking, and I'll have the same."

Your generosity is appreciated by both your friend and the draper, who takes your pennies and brings over the frothy mugs of ale he's coaxed from the barrels. The conversation is thick about the bench. Old Lamprisado is holding forth on his early soldiering days. Miss Featherbrook is talking about intrigue at court. Tom Cony is grousing about the price of gin.

1. I listen to Old Lamprisado go on about the wars he's seen.
2. Talk with Miss Featherbrook about matters of court.
3. I join in with Tom Cony about the price of gin.
4. I keep alert for more profitable gossip.

You ignore the idle chatter of those around you and listen out for talk that might help your purposes. Further down the bench you see a woman loudly addressing a gang of unsavoury characters. Wisps of black hair escape from under her black tricorn hat; the hat matches her black vest, waistcoat, and pantaloons. A thin white scar runs down her firm jaw, her mouth set in a permanent scowl.

"Drink well," she says, rolling her Rs with a Welsh accent, "but not too well. We may have caught Jack the Lad, but we won't get our full reward until he's set to hang."

Tom Cony catches you listening in. "That's Nia Maddox, that is. The story'll be one for the news sheets, there's no mistake."

1. Introduce myself to Nia Maddox.
2. Congratulate Nia Maddox on her success.
3. Listen in awhile.
4. Pay attention to who I'm with instead.
