The best (and worst) artifacts your dwarves have made!
« on: August 08, 2017, 09:59:20 am »

What are the most interesting artifacts your dwarves have made? I've seen interesting artifacts in various stories here, but I haven't seen a thread consolidating them. So please tell me about the best and worst of your dwarves' latest creations!

I got an adamantine helm covered in T3-gemwork, like blue garnet and the like.

Probably my best artifact in terms of practicality.

A burning steel (think heavier divine metal that's pure black) longsword, with an image of our fortresses champion striking down a cave dragon on it, in gold, which is his favourite metal, avec a ruby, his favourite gem, and he was a legendary sworddwarf.

Worst was a candy hammer with an image of a hammer in platinum. I cried.

A pink garnet statue of someone's dead corpse after they died of thirst.

I installed it in the hospital. You know, to boost morale.

One of my dwarves just made an artifact:
encrusted with rock crystal,
encircled with bands of willow,
menacing with spikes of gniess, larch, and rock crystal,
with images in slate and copper.

It's a thong.

It would be difficult selecting my all-time favorite, but here's one that I will remember for a while. First, a bit of backstory. I had been unprepared in one of my forts, and so I ended up having a bit of !FUN! when a werebeast decided to visit. Said werebeast picked up a log and proceeded to beat a cat and a human (visitor, I think) to death with it. Not long later, my bowyer procced a possessed mood and decided to use that exact log to create an artifact crossbow.

I like to think it's called Judgedsoak because the pomelo wood is soaked in blood :)

The engraved two waves are a metaphor of the souls of the human and the cat who now inhabit the wood

In the fort I had just before I updated to 44.07 I had so many, such utterly useless artefacts that I ended up making the museum of tat, where I put it all. There were  things that I have later learned were actually quite good but didn't see the point of at the time, like artefact mechanisms, things that were pretty but ultimately no better than low quality objects of the same type, like a solid gemstone barrel (green tourmaline I think, very popular among engravers, decorators, and artefact makers, often depicted containing sheep milk), things that were functionally fine game-wise but logically made no sense, like a green glass mini-forge, but mostly there were artefact crafts and unremarkable objects that just consumed useful resources. Possibly the worst offender was a steel studded wooden bucket, not only because it was a pointless consumption of steel, but specifically because this fortress had no access to iron, and it's flux stone layer was the magma sea, so that stuff had to be imported from the mountainhome, where I can only assume they summon it forth from deep within their beards as they also had no iron.

Best Weapon Artifact:
Balmozib, Toneswallow, Adamantine Two-Handed Sword
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I had to edit the weapon's size requirement to allow the captain of the sword master squad
to use it.  I figured it was ok as she was a veritable dwarf giant, 120,000 ccm in size.
I later granted her effective immortality after her 2000th kill.  By this time, the only non-
artifacts she had equipped was her backpack and flask, and that was only because I
couldn't get her to equip the artifact ones I had made.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Most Valuable Artifact:
Dalzatamkin, Matchedglad, Large, Serrated Adamantine Disc
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Lucked out with material demands that could be filled with raw adamantine (stone, blocks, cut gem).
Lucked out again with a dwarf who liked Large, Serrated Discs and was thus guaranteed to make them during the appropriate mood.

Worst Artifact:
Rulushemath, Splashbanded, Adamantine Earring
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Migranted mooded before he could be retrained and used up one of the
rare (at the time) pieces of adamantine.  Not really bad, but the dwarfs
holding the scorecards make it memorable.

Not specifically the best of worst; but perhaps the weirdest...

I had a Coffin made; which depicts as it's artwork... another Dwarf entering a mood.

Honestly that's the most canon thing I've ever seen a dwarf make.

No, that's amazing. Give it to the hammerer or sheriff. Allow justice to be dispensed.

My best was my last fortress, sadly lost to update, but a steel breastplate just covered in gems and gold.
