Bombardier beetle?

Anyway, flight could probably count as artillery.

While your here Iituem what do you think of the feasibility of modifying or telepathy to mess with humans, even if its only on  a basic level for now

Like Saint, I won't comment on the feasibility of designs.  I will sometimes comment on game mechanics, where I think knowledge of them (or more accurately lack thereof) might affect your decision-making process.  But feasibility of designs I won't comment on.
What if were to be rephrased as "there seems to be a restriction on The Hive developing magic, so as to keep the sides distinct. Would exploiting our telepathy to interfere with The League directly be considered magic? What about forcefully inserting a physical link to our hivemind into a mage and then using the normal processes of the hivemind to compel them into obedience? Telepathy is a realm of the physical world that is widely regarded as impossible, while magic uses such as somewhat of a definition. It is unclear as to what precisely The Hive would be forbidden from achieving based upon the "no-magic" rule. As a side note, my personal preference is to implement a save-and-reload feature so that, within certain data-storage limits, no mind within the hive would ever die, and we could retain our experienced solders and such forever. Burt resurrection is sort of magical in some settings..."

You, hereby defined as the Hive, its Queens and its Drones, cannot use magic, here defined as the system of spellcasting and its underlying principles that the League uses to warp the laws of physics.  Beyond that, as I say frequently to my D&D group: "You don't know."

Year 304

The year 304 sees the League's mages improve significantly in survivability.  Now wielding a third distinct spell, the mages seem to be able to harden their own seemingly ordinary cloth robes into as hard a substance as bronze, with even the splashes of acid from spitter strikes sliding safely off it before completely destroying the fabric.  The fortunate spearmen surrounding these spellcasters too seem to benefit from the enchantment, their boiled leather armour gaining something of the nature of bronze to it as well.  Even the many unfortunate slaves dragged into the fight sometimes benefit from a mage's touch.  Mages do still die to being punched through the chest by a Soldier drone's pincer, of course, but they seem to be able to avoid being killed by ordinary workers now.

For the Hive's part, it unleashes a small amount of a new type of drone, a house-cat sized insect without the deadly forelimbs of workers or soldiers and atrophied mandibles.  Its limbs have been converted into forward-facing legs and it is covered in uneven armour.  This 'hunter drone' proves fast; not so fast as a charging warhorse such as the hippeis ride, but faster than the fastest of the League's runners.  Instead of trampling foes, however, these tiny insects get close to their targets and then violently spray acid from their mouths before fleeing.  It is effective against slaves, but they cannot generally approach close enough to most spearmen to vomit their attacks.  Indeed, the creatures once cornered are easily enough despatched; a solid spear blow to the weak points in their armour will disable them, and a second killing stroke is often easier thereafter.  The problem is catching the beggars in the first place.

The League chose not to accept the Thanatonian 'offer', insisting they could have an even seat at the table or none at all.  The Thanetonian centurion departed, promising that his people would not be 'so generous next time'.  However, the aristoi of the League seem heartened by the council's decision in this matter.  Better they stand together than raise one above the rest.

Whether the result of more apprentice assistance, the fact that the Hive withdrew their spitters or simply the fortifications at Oracuse, the hill fort does not fall this year.

The walled town of Dromio is less fortunate, as the Spitters are returned to the second front to provide their distinctive support.  With worker ladders and an unceasing barrage of acidic spit, the town falls.  Only two apprentices, a team of siege engineers and seven hoplites for a bodyguard manage to escape the ensuing massacre.

The 2nd Front moves to the edge of the Kydessan Plains and the Kydessan Woods.  The Hive, as the attacker, may choose which territory the front will push through.

The aphrokemae join the fight in the Nippan Woods, but the tide of battle is clear.  They mostly help organise the retreat of a handful of more valuable troops to Nippi itself.

The Hive has taken the Nippan Woods and may extract its bounty.  The 3rd Front has moved to the edge of Nippi, but has not yet pressed far enough forwards to besiege the walls.

Opportunity; Design Advantage

With numerous opportunities on the horizon for a new hive, the Queen is preparing to design her first daughter (drones are sexless, except for the immobile, mindless lumps that attach themselves to the Queen's body and serve as repositories for male genetic material).  Obviously the new Queen will be subservient to her mother, but there is a tricky line to walk here; too docile and she might not be useful, too independent and she might be rebellious.  The Queen has therefore chosen to delegate to you, her Thinker caste.  Design (as a free action) the next Queen to be spawned.  You must present designs based upon the following criteria and others you may consider:

- Gross physical anatomy.  The current Queen's abdomen is akin to a massively corpulent larva that continuously spits out eggs, while her head and forelimbs are tiny and between Worker and Solider sized.  She is immobile.
- Nutrition.  The current Queen is an obligate carnivore, brought food by workers.
- Environmental Tolerance.  The current Queen requires a stable environment with regular temperature and humidity.  She resides underground, her chamber maintained by drones.
- Defences.  The current Queen relies entirely upon a bodyguard of Soldiers to protect her in the event of incursion.
- Personality.  What should the Queen shape her daughter's personality to be?  The current Queen is cold, lacks empathy and is highly independent and intelligent.

Depending on the finalised proposal, you may get either an Advantage to Effectiveness, Cost or Bug-fixing/avoidance.  Invoking your Advantage lets you roll the die twice, picking the better roll.  An excellent proposal may see other benefits.

Note:  The League seems to be getting magic slaves out of nowhere.  This is a reporting bug; they are using up spare manpower that isn't being used in ships (ships are allocated 10% of all manpower but don't use it all).  Trying to fix that has resulted in game-breaking weirdness, so I'll take a shot at it when I'm not tired.  I've left it be because it's representative; they might as well use that manpower anyway, it's going to waste if not.

Note 2:  From next turn onwards, terrain will be taken into account.  More on this when coded.  3 terrains will be considered; plains, forest and hills.

It is the Design Phase.  You have 5 Dice remaining.

Proposed Queen Design:

Daughter "Anatress:
Gross Physical Anatomy: Something like this A massive evolved form of her abdomen is with a sleek larvae shape that strolls down into a slug-like tail. A huge head with many eye sockets and infra-red eye spots surround the giant head of the Daughter. Her forearms are very thin but very long with claw outcroppings of each of the arms. Nearly Immobile
Nutrition: Ruminant Digestive System, food is still brought by workers but she can diverge her food if their is need for it. She contains a secondary, alternate obligate carnivore system for sustenance if the need for more nutrients is needed
Environmental Tolerance: Very suited to adaptable climate of forest-like areas, but requires a consistence output of temperature and humidity to maintain perfect health. She is still out looked by worker drones.
Defenses: A pair of Spitters defend the flanks for the Queen, while soldiers still perform as bodyguards. Has a multitude pair of infra-red eyespots for protection against ambushes.
Personality: Goal-oriented, calculating, and sadistic. The Daughter performs the role as a complete detester of human-kind, she derives a system of contentment and entertainment within the neutral system when she witnesses the pain and fear from human. She lack docility for this nature, but she is very subservient when it comes to the destruction of humans

Proposed Design:
Quote
Bombardier: Utilizing the genome structure of our Spitters, the Queen has modified the genetic makeup to be streamlined and much more customizable for the Spitters Elites. These new drones serve the purpose of artillery through two methods. Two modifications to the neck and mouth barrel is developed, the necked is elongated and changed by the method of angular rotation. The neck lays at a 45' degree angle but the creature can adjust its carapace muscles and endoskeleton to change its degree of rotations to go over walls or close in its range against incoming enemies. The mouth barrel has further been extended for artillery and bombardment purpose, and more carapace muscles have inserted in to allow the acid plegm to be shot out further. The toxic plegm has also been under adjustment, and instead of been spraying pieces of acid that have a larger area. The plegm is concentrated to allow for more propelling force enough to allow it to crack stone and than dissolve the stone with its toxins. Like the current Spitter Elites, it has a limited visual range so it utilizes pure luck to hits it target except Infra-Red Spots have been adopted so that any incoming melee troops can be avoided.
Genes Utilized: Infra-Red Spots, Elite Carapace, Acid Glands, Everything Else the Spitter Utilizes
Genes Developed: Artillery Mouth Barrel, Rotational Neck, Concentrated Plegm

Proposed Queen Design:

Daughter"Novico V2"(Free):
Gross Physical Anatomy: About same height as our current queen with body similar to that of the soldier drones, she has her two thin and long serrated club like forelimbs higher up on the body with a short spinal tail to provide balance. Her body consists of few layers of mixed carapace to provide protection. When immobile her abdomen swells up produce a long egg sac for laying eggs from her rear. As for her head she has thickened ridges on top of her head with pairs of multi-faceted eyes along with dark IR spots surrounding each eye.

Nutrition: She has obligate carnivorous digestive system like the previous queen but through the use of managing the different strains of bacteria to reduce metabolically waste of food and egg laying.

Environmental Tolerance: While mobile she has same tolerance of that of average drone, but requires a stable temperature when she is in process of egg laying to maintain good egg qaulity or laying rate.

Defenses: She relies on few but highly trained honour guard of Soldiers and few spitters which both have IR than non honour guard brethren to provide her back up against intrusions.

Personality: She is warm towards her children and those of her kind, but has a cunning and outright cruel in dealing with outsiders she also possess a sort of free spirited thought process and has strong distaste for humanity.

Proposed Design for Seiging and fighting:
Quote
Revencher: A variant of soldier drone, the drone is close to the size of a elephant with large back and middle legs providing balance while it's forelimbs are now higher up on body to allow it to more easily swing it's heavily reinforced chitin pincered club like forelimbs with serrated edges, making it useful for cleaving and piercing many enemy's and for bludgeoning and smashing down walls and gates. Layers of heavy chitin cover the body of the drone leaving only lower limbs and parts of head exposed. It has four multi-faceted compound eyes forward facing. It's 6 limbs have move much far out from the body and become double segmented with new tissue type called cartilage to provide flexibility and support with it's intended role is as a siege weapon. It head has also move out further from the body has it has now spouted a small neck allowing for flexible head movement.

Genes Used: Compound Eyes, Antennae, Telepathy, Obligate Carnivorous Digestive System, Hexapod Limb Array, Heavy Carapace, Biological strings., Low-Power, Endurance Muscles,
New Genes: Double Segmented limbs, Cartilage, Neck Rotation.

On a side note, we're sustaining severe losses on several fronts now.

We're down 138 Workers on front 1, 66 workers on front 2, and 218 workers on front 3. We can't keep taking losses that big if we wan't to keep anything.

Forest Princess[Name Subject to Change]
Quote
- Gross Physical Anatomy
: The same basic design but somewhat smaller. And armoured "skid" under and around her belly to protect it from the environment and reduce friction while moving, and two large, powerful, but slow forelimbs used for dragging herself, or being dragged. A somewhat enlarged brain to facilitate additional memory, especially regarding terrain. She is mobile, but it is very slow, energy consuming, and eggs laid during are generally lost to being dropped too far.
- Nutrition
: Obligate Carnivore. She requires a large intake and can afford logistical focus. This does expose her somewhat to discovery by tracing her logistical train, but she ought to be capable of underminign that.
- Environmental Tolerance
: She still requires a controlled chamber, but has a mildly segregated anatomy with her vital components in a more tolerant region that can resist changes to her larger reproductive biology. She can survive periods of inclement conditions, even navigating over the surface of a forest environ for weeks, but it is likely to take months for her reproductive faculties to return to normal after more than a few hours of hostile environs.
- Defences
: The current Queen relies entirely upon a bodyguard of Soldiers to protect her in the event of incursion, but she can generally crush anything that hides underneath her.
- Personality
: While still dispassionate towards the war, she cares for her own territory and the permanent residents of it. She attempts to become very familiar with the landscape and takes an active role in guiding scouts and harvesters through her world and maintaining it in a long-term viable state. This does leave her somewhat prone to being possessive over "her" forces and less interested in the war overall, but she is well suited to defending a forest with misdirection and ambush, Preparing false and reserve facilities, relocating to avoid being located and generally proving why attacking a well-prepared enemy in a complex terrain is generally viewed as highly unpleasant.

Developments:
Skid carapace
Dragging limbs
Memory enhance
Partial tolerance
Territorial familiarity

Primarily an experiment in wings, these follow a fairly simple pattern. They fly, build up speed, then crash into the enemy, pointed-and-armoured head first.
Altitude is not a great concern, their limited vision would prevent much coordination at any distance.
Their conventional combat ability is not great. They borrow from and attempt to tighten the genetics of the old project to provide clawed legs to workers, which makes them generally dangerous to their surroundings, and incorporate the Hunter legs for greater speed, but being only about a metre long with unwieldy heads they generally lack the proficiency to engage a competent foe.
They heads are designed to be dangerously pointed, with ridges to provide directional strength against front-impacts. They generally attempt to remain hidden behind allies until they detect evidence(usually from the hivemind, but they also have unusually good spatial awareness for flight, which aids in tracking attacks to their source). When they sense a target, they quickly fly upwards and forwards to about ten or fifteen metres, then dive/charge towards it, attempting to spear through whatever is causing trouble, and ideally whatever is standing behind it, and behind that too... then dig themselves free of the gore and return to friendly lines amidst the confusion, which is unlikely to be successful unless there is more distractions following them, but spiky thing running towards its lines, and thus from behind most people, is not entirely futile.

Developments:
 Open low-altitude wings
 Spear-head
 Beclawed running legs
 Spatial awareness

Princess "Silvia": Taking into account her home-to-be, Silvia has been designed for optimal performance in wooded environments.
Anatomy: As she will rule over a smaller hive, it is appropriate that Silvia be smaller than her mother. As she will not be ruling from an established hive (or ancient labyrinth), she is designed to be semi-mobile in her 'teenage' state, with larger limbs than her mother, and a slightly hardened carapace, designed only to withstand the stress of travel. She will still require assistance to move efficiently. Once her hive has been solidly established, her limbs will atrophy down to a smaller size, whilst her hardened carapace will slowly soften.
Nutrition: New! Omnivorous Digestive System. In deference to the lack of conventional food sources in her new home, Silvia's digestive system has been adapted to be truly omnivorous. Capable of consuming meat, fruits, and even small amounts of gluten (such as might be found in the nutritional sludge produced by Emitics), it is ensured that unless there is literally nothing left to eat, Silvia shall not starve. This may be less energy efficient in absolute terms, but the increase in the variety of foods consumable should ensure that she gets enough extra to eat to make up for it.
Environmental Tolerance: As with her anatomy, Silvia is designed to at first be capable of surviving outdoors, with a temperature tolerance range enabling her to survive cool nights (albeit with her escort covering her to provide insulation), and the midday sun (albeit in a shaded location), and capable of withstanding changes in humidity. However, she will not produce a lot of young during this phase of her existence; it is a temporary state until a suitable location for a hive can be located, and a warren dug out beneath the earth. Once her hive has been established, and her chamber constructed, she will slowly lose her adaptability, until she resembles her mother in requiring a constant temperature and humidity- which will also enable her to give birth to a greater number of drones.
Defences: In her 'teenage' state, she is capable of a modicum of self defence, swiping at attackers with her limbs and snapping at them with her mandibles. This too shall atrophy as her hive becomes established, until she requires a bodyguard of soldiers to protect her from any assault.
Personality: Careful- almost skittish- during her mobile phase, with a drive to found a hive being her main priority, overriding other aspects of her personality. Once established, she will have an emotional connection to her mother, but otherwise be cold and calculating. She shall seek the death of mankind, and the preservation of herself and her mother.

May I be so bold as to suggest No Design? We want to keep two dice for the Strategy phase (one to establish the princess, another to fortify her home), and I think the trial run of the Hunters was surprisingly successful, suggesting we might want to revise them rather than start an all-new design.

No design and a few revisions on hunter doesn't seem bad, especially if we can turn them into mage killers somehow ( sadly, it seems they are shrugging off acid?)

still, I am going to propose something

Lamprey bug
This bug is the first member of our hive that can swim. Small in size and with as little of its body abovewater as possible, it should be quite hard to detect from enemy ships. Instead of the legs of our other bugs, it has fins that helps its movements in water. It keeps however 2 barbed arms that it uses to latch on enemy hulls. After latching on, it starts secreting acid similarly to the hunters; acid which it uses to pierce holes below the water line, making even a couple of those bugs deadly to an enemy ship if they can approach undetected.

It is a bit poorly written due to lack of time, but I believe the concept is clear: swim toward enemy ship stealthily, latch on, make hole with acid. Could be a cost effective way of sinking ships, although I am worried about our swimming speed.

Proposed designs are ignoring our main, huge problem > We will run out of workers soon and get pushed back everywhere.

Also, new drones have a large limitation . It's not Sensei's kind of game. New units don't appear out of thin air, we need to allocate budget for them and we can't afford ourself to reduce amount of workers produced either.

Lets delay cool personal project and mighty new drones, OK?

Yeah, speaking of Hunters, let's do an analysis.

Effectiveness

First front :  16 hunters kill 4 spearmen, 55 slaves
Second Front : 8 hunters kill  3 spearmen, 26 slaves
Third Front : 7 hunters kill 1 spearmen, 24 slaves

So, on average 3.5 Slaves and 0.25 Spearman per Hunter

compared to Workers

First front :
      - Skirmish : 3 hoplites, 23 spearmen, 186 slaves by 1,147 Workers
Second Front :
      - Skirmish : 4 hoplites, 25 spearmen, 150 slaves by 975 workers
Third front :
      - Skirmish : 2 hoplites, 18 spearmen, 187 slaves by 1,131 Workers

(Values have been quadrupled, because Workers contribute 1/3 of their force in skirmish that they can contribute in melee)

0.64 Slaves + 0.1 Spearmen + 0.016 Hoplites

So, an a per manpower basis we see that the Worker is about equal at killing spearmen, and much worse at killing slaves, though it has killed Hoplites were the Hunter hasn't.

Losses

First front : 23% survival rate
Second front : 75% survival rate
Third front :  57% survival rate

For comparison, under workers.

First front : 20% survival rate
Second front : 63% survival rate
Third front :  52% survival rate

So yeah, Hunters are good.

On a side note, see how survival rates on the second front are a lot better? That's because of the spitters. Killing the enemy before they can kill you helps.
