generating miasma on purpose?
« on: August 04, 2017, 06:11:09 pm »

So, I attached a pair of smoke stacks to my underground corpse / refuse piles and waited for a kobold thief.

The first puff of miasma venting forth into the atmosphere was glorious, totally reaching for the sky. Kinda like the opening scene from Blade Runner, but with purple gouts of fetid corpse-stink instead of flame.

It was the most dorfy thing I have ever accomplished.

Anyway, I guess what I'm looking for here is a way to generate maximum miasma with the minimum amount of effort, so that my stacks are forever spewing gross filth into the atmosphere in the vain hope that some elves happen to be downwind.

Hoping that a rotting fish stockpile might be the answer. A miasma industry would actually make fisherdwarves worthwhile.

Anyway, thank you in advance for your thoughts and learn'd answers. |m|

Generating miasma, that is, rotting forever?

You could toss a naked werebeast (if your citizen, disable cleaning) into an inside room with pool(s) of necrotic dust.

Werebeast walks over dust, spews miasma, heals on transformation.

Otherwise, I think you'd have to constantly produce new items to create miasma.

A hatched pit would allow you to drop crap into it without miasma leaking out to my understanding. That would at least allow your dwarfs to refill the stink pile.

Don't eggs rot? Set up an egg farm specifically to dump em perpetually into the rot pile.

I have a vision of a minecart loaded with canine corpses flying at high speed through a puppy ranch and dumping the load into the generator.

Do cats kill vermin? Maybe you can use some cats on food stockpiles.

Why not flush the corpses of goblin invaders into the miasma pit with water?

Dead vermin don't generate miasma anymore. I'm not sure if it's a switch that's disabled by default or if it was a code change.

You could try something like this with the dump pit to minimize miasma entering your fortress:
Code: [Select]
█ - wall
D - dump pit (dumped from above through hatch cover)
M - miasma pit (connected to miasma chimney)
~ - water source
# - grate
* - water drain

You can do similar with smoke easily; get some coal ore blocks, put them in a magma-safe bin, and order it dumped where you want the smoke. Then drop magma on it to achieve ignition, and boom. Smoke.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

You can get infinite smoke if you set fire to an artifact.

This thread just goes to show me that there is no game mechanic so noxious or annoying that someone won't try to turn the knob up to 11 on it just for the sheer hell of it.

Ok so if you make an egg farm for miasma and light an artifact/coal blocks on fire at the same time you can generate horrific stink smoke at a constant and likely prodigious rate.

This is my vote for best plan.

You want a hallway that can be closed on both ends.
In the middle, one side has a fortification next to the rotting egg pit.
On the other middle side, is a fortification next to the burning artifact pit.
Both pits can be closed with lever-hatch.

Now see if you can trap invaders, then open both hatches, and see if they become unconscious from miasma and smoke.
