Author Topic: Retired Adventurer in Fortress, Cannot Choose Labor, Walks Around Jobless  (Read 2111 times)

I recently retired my newest adventurer Uvash in one of my older fortresses in hopes of reclaiming it and assigning him as a squad leader, so that he could train some of my less than useful dwarves into some adequate spearmen. Upon attempting to assign him to a squad, I find that he's not listed in the pull down menu. I figure there might be something wrong with his assigned labors, or something of the sort, and go to check his preferences, only to find that I can't even give him any sort of labor. Why is this happening, and is there any way that I can change this?

You need to join the fortress before retiring. Right now he's classed as a foreign visitor (even if he does show up in the 'citizens' list).

Join as an entertainer (dance for the mayor) or fighter (speak to Captain of the Guard or Military commander) then retire.

I tried becoming a militia dwarf as well as a performer, but neither would have me. What do I do now?

Cheat or work harder? It's part of the game. Become good enough and they'll accept you. Mayor wants to see a legendary performance (and will continue to be very critical of you until he does, so you'll know when you're good enough). Militia commander (like everyone else) wants reputation.

I've felled a cyclops as well as a moaning monster and a handful of dwarven outlaws, enough to earn myself a title, and I still can't get accepted to become militia dwarf. How do I make him realize I did all of these things? How much reputation do I need to become a militia dwarf?

Do they greet you as a legendary hero? Are you actually telling everyone about your deeds? You'll know when you have a good reputation. Mayors and militia captains are slightly more demanding (makes the game challenging, I guess). It's not impossible, but it's not going to be easy either.

I don't believe they're hailing me as such, but I have tried to tell them about my deeds, though I'm not certain if I chose the right dialogue option to do so. I tried bragging about my past violent acts, but I got no response from the commander. I tried to spread a rumor that I killed the Cyclops, but there was no option to do so from what I could see. Am I going about it wrong or do they just not care. I've tried picking up a quest from both the mayor and the commander, but they don't seem to be giving me one, unless I'm going about that wrong too.

You should be able to tell people about your Cyclops adventure. Might be buried in amongst a whole load of other rumours. Interface is still pretty dodgy right now.

I managed to find a bit where I'd killed the outlaws, still couldn't find the cyclops part, but oh well. He accepted me finally, so thanks for the help. On a second note however, is there anyway I could get my companion to become a citizen? Thanks again.

Hmm. Don't think so. He might apply for citizenship once you start fortress. Possibly. But there are a lot of weird bugs with people's status after unretiring so perhaps not.

Ah, that's unfortunate. I suppose my companion will just have to remain a visitor for the time being. At least I got my adventurer to the status I wanted him to be at. Thanks a bunch for the  help.

One way that is sometimes easier to spread rumours is to tell stories about your deeds.  Unfortunately, you can't tell stories about yourself (which I think is very unfortunate), but if you know the location where your battle was, you can tell a story about a site or a region and search for your battle.  This is often convenient, because only notable things show up in that menu, instead of the millions of "spread rumour about the encounter with a honey badger" (said honey badger having popped his head on your screen for a single turn).  Rumours seem to spread just as well from stories as they do when you spread a rumour.  If you don't know the site where your battle took place, you can search for it from the events menu in the 'Q' menu.  Once you find the incident, you can press 'z' to zoom the cursor to the location.

Hello seven years later. Probably not still a concern of yours, but in case anybody else comes across this because they are experiencing the same problem (like I did), here's a link to a post by a user who made a dfhack script that allows you to make any unit on your screen a citizen of your fort.
