Now I was resettling my original fortress to eradicate the werebeasts and I got bored, so I dug down to the circus and promptly GTFO'd, sealing the entrances and letting the place flood with demons and kill all the beasts. I got bored and went down the rabbit hole, and there were a load of smooth walls throughout the hole made from various stones, along with "Unknown Material" Fortifications. Are there underground ruins I didn't know about or is this all a part of Hell?

Will post screenshots later as I'm in the middle of adventure shenanigans, game isn't modded whatsoever.

Sounds like a glitch/bug. Unknown material fortification..I think it means the fortification isn't made from anything, a term that shows up when, for ex. if you give jeweler's workshop to encrust with gems and set it to use any gem with dfhck's job-material.

Never heard of fortifications (or any other building not made by the dwarves) down there.
I've encountered one case of "unknown material" in a reclaim fortress I was allowed to use (not mine originally). In that case it should have been candy, as it was part of a candy spire the original world gen fortress had sheared through. Mining a few tiles of it didn't yield any stone of any kind, though.

You found a fortress in HFS? I feel like you should pray for forgiveness because you didn't post screenshots.

Currently working on a different fortress in this world, but once I retire it to move some adventures over I'll go back and take a few. I evacuated the dorfs (somehow got them all out before the circus came to town) and built accomodations on the surface after I sealed the fort up.
