Today I Learned (TIL): The latest LNP has a cool purple text announcement; plant gatherer "Cercei Lannister is stuck in a tree!"
That's cool. Is it dfhack? Something else?

Dfhack. Though, I've adopted warn-starving being run once a month ages ago.

Or get familiar with the macro feature.
That was my learning for the day, macros. Why did I not delve into these sooner? They would have saved sooooo much time.

If you have saplings under coin stockpile and you add floor 2z above, much more than normal - roughly 90% - of the saplings will die the moment you remove the stockpile. Counted 5 alive trees and 50ish dead saplings. Bridges make healthier ceiling, though the blocking trunk tiles are invisible unless bridge is hidden.

On the nicer side, it can take as little as quarter a century for at least one tree in my test fort to get twigs 9z above ground. None of the other new ones I grew grew as fast, but that's pretty quick. (Width and trunk tiles above initial growth, alas, are far slower to increase).

Also, puppies may constantly run between the cage their mother is in and meeting area. "Is mother still there? Ok. Are dwarves still there? Ok. Is .." ad infinitum. My ‼FPS‼! Though I suppose useful if you want surface patrols.

Did you test if Highwood grow faster than other trees?  And maybe Ginkgo trees as 2nd highest?  This is from observing many embarks where Highwood and Ginkgo seem to have more than 1x1 tile width for heavily forested biomes.

Yes, highwoods do have wider trunks on embark, but that takes long-ass time. Width is slooooow. I'm speaking just on post-embark trees, here.

The highest post-embark tree on my test map is actually right now 29-year old cherry tree (+3 years for sapling to grow). (kept test fort running because why not). Second highest (7z with branches, 2 lower) is just as old apple tree. A ginkgo and alder that sprouted at roughly same time have also grown to 7z height while having trunk part of that height go to 6{EDIT: Apple and Alder have grown to 8z 4 years after that, with alder taking trunk tile up with itself}. I do have a decade and half 4z highwood(2z trunk).

If you look at the raws, most trees have 8z max height (maximum supported, noted on highwood). Trunk height, I assume. Though not all do; some like Black-Cap have only 3.

Most amusing to me is now two decades old birch, which initially only grew 3z of trunk and no branches. Branches were added to the side later; next spring. Reminds me of programming :v (Now 4z trunk and 6z total height.)
