Vahn lowered his club slowly, his eyes not leaving Domenico's.

"Let's say I believe you, and your proof is real. What do you propose happens to the town of Kovitz?"

[Solymr]

: They won't leave you a choice. They are too... corrupted to consider redemption. It will be either your lives, or theirs. And if they do give you a choice... I'm no judge. I'm no better than them.

Vahn considered this as he rolled another smoke, then lit it with a brief flare of Black Fire.

"This rabbit hole seems to have no end. We'll look at this evidence, together. And I'll decide what to do from there."

The warlock sighed.

"Those kids, they're all good people out there. I don't know how they're going to handle this. It might be best to leave them out of it and let them continue on in their innocence... assuming I can trust you long enough to watch my back as I handle Kovitz."

"Well, that's what I would have said ten, twenty years ago. I told you the truth before. I'm just too damn weak and old to do this by myself, and I don't plan on dying to a bunch of townies. So you're going to explain this entire business to them. Come along."

Jackal wiped the sweat from his brow as he finished searching the last room of the fort. It was really quite brilliant in terms of defense. One way in, one way out, blockade the front and stand back fire arrows to fend off intruders. Either Magruder was incompetent or they were just that good. To be fair they'd had a lot of good weapons to do the job with. They were probably made that way though.
I wonder if Vahn has found that priest yet...And what will we do after we tie off all the loose ends. Will we continue to help the world as a group? Or will I go out on my own, there's still many people in this world who need help. I still want to build the legend of The Jackal. No use delaying it though, I'll go see how the situation with that guy played out. Jackal goes to find Vahn

: They need to know the truth. Not everyone has your surviving skills, they'd do good knowing what their friendly neighbors are capable of doing.

Domenico followed Vahn to the rest of the group, where he explained his actions sabotaging Kovitz payments to Magruder and their slave operation.

Vahn waited until Domenico was finished.

"...That's where things stand. I understand if any of you want to back out at this point. We're probably about to go kill a bunch of relatively helpless villagers for their role in this. Even if we don't directly kill them, we're shutting down their source of income; they're going to have to find new lives to lead. If you're not comfortable with that..."

[Lyca]

Anna stood silently in the room, mindlessly cleaning her spear from the blood of its victims. After hearing the so-called evicence, she speaks up.

All I can offer is involving my superiors to sort this out without murder, but rather, arrest. The proof has to be more than convincing, though. If this is not an option, I am not going to go home as a newly promoted Falco Knight who has slain defenseless townspeople. I'll be dishonoured and exiled. At best.

"Good idea. The sooner they're involved, the better. I don't want to tarnish anyone's reputation here. You all have good futures ahead of you."

[Solymr]

Domenico nodded slowly at Anna's words.

: You're right, there may be still good people in that town. There will be no better proof than the slaves themselves. We can sneak into town at night and try to rescue some of them.

Jackal stood up and walked to Vahn to speak to him and Domenico without the others hearing
What's the point of sparing these people if it ruins their lives? In order to prevent banditry and violence in the future we must first understand what causes it. Nobody wants to be a bandit when they dream about their lives, men are forced to barbaric actions out of desperation. Some men never try to steady themselves when they have the chance because they've forgotten what it is to be otherwise. But if you spare these men who become jobless, and they turn to banditry and murder as a result then that's on us. I won't be able to live with myself knowing I could have prevented it but I can't live knowing slaves are being used to prevent this. You and others  may try to spare these villagers but...I'll do what has to be done to prevent more suffering. If I need to go down as a villain here, then so be it.

"Frankly I feel the same way."

"That being said, we have to consider the logistics of the situation. The lord of the region isn't going to be happy if Kovitz stops producing steel, and we'll go down as outlaws ourselves for slaughtering the town. What I'm hoping for is to get these slaves rescued and the ringleaders arrested. For all we know not everyone in town knows about the scheme, and I'd hate to kill the innocent even if the rest of the purging is necessary."

"But if it comes to it and we have to fight, I'm showing no mercy. I'm not going to die to a bunch of slavers."

"I am all for killing some slavers, but we need to do this at night, in the dark, and with a small team. Vahn should stay off mission and be around town. People know you take point."

I agree on rescuing the slaves and arresting the ringleaders. If everything Domenico said is true, I might not even be against having a word with Bastian myself.

But, I plead to let me try to get the higher-ups on our side. If they hear there was a massacre in Kovitz by the people they sent to protect it... I fear for the worst.

: We need to make haste. The sun is almost completely set, and we can't give them enough time to figure out what happened.
