So it definitely looks like fun. The kickstarter reached 300%.

Fair enough, I am more familiar with the later versions of the Dyson sphere than with it's original concept.  Niven did describe the ringworld as a "compromise" design, though I'm not sure in what context exactly.
The "later" design is actually mentioned earlier in Dyson's original publication, as an intermediate step to explain his actual idea. That same publication then goes on to explain why it wouldn't work, and propose the cluster as an alternative that overcomes the limitation.

But the idea of a solid sphere has more romance to it, and is both easier and more impressive to depict.

I'm going to have to actually read Dyson at some point, I hate only having third-hand knowledge of a subject.  Thank you for providing that information all the same.

Lets see if this one actually pans out. A lot of these open-space exploration games never seem to deliver.

I've only poked and prodded at the latest changes, but overall my impression is that the:

graphics (though im not sure I like ALL the changes),

building mechanics,

stability (though people still seem to meme crashing so),

and ship mechanics...

have all been refined or iterated upon. My understanding of the plan going forward, is that there are a few changes to things like fuel and some more stability testing to be done before the work on the gameplay loop gets fully underway. Though I'm not fully aware of the cumulative content of all the updates over the years, the dev (Francois/Tsuna) is considerably more active and hardworking than most. That said, it has been stated that there will be:

Mining & Crafting,
Missions,
Modding Support,
a "Deep Faction Interaction System",
"Survival Mode",
and Planets (right now it's just ring worlds and* stations, though this isnt a huge problem imo).

Surprisingly, there is a lot of good lore work being done which gives me hope it'll actually be used in the creation of a larger gameplay loop than build->kill/mine->loot->repeat.

EDIT: I would say, much more so than other projects, cautious optimism is a safe bet rn.

So I just got this game yesterday from the final backer wave thing, and I recorded myself playing through the tutorial level as someone who's never actually played the game and doesn't quite know what they're doing.

Oh this is coming out soon? I was curious what the progress on it has been. I've been playing Stormworks: Build and Rescue to scratch my building game itch and one thing I've taken away from it is that 'block building' games are better then a chair doesn't take up a 5x5x5 meter square of space. Looking at you Space Engineers and to an extent From the Depths. I forget what the devs call it but I recall them having a system where you can place micro-blocks to add detail to your ship, is that still around? I didn't notice anything like that in the video posted above.

The other thing I've learned is that being able to build stuff with a free-look camera instead of being tied to a physical body/character is simply better, and if this game doesn't have that then I worry about how frustrating it'd be to build anything. From the Depths did it the best since at any time you could just open the build menu and add stuff to your vehicles at any time. The problem is that it was designed with a sort of weird block-by-block building system. On the other hand Stormworks does block placement better since it's point and click and you can drag blocks and slopes and such and it automatically fills in the gaps, but you need to be in designated areas and take the vehicles out of play before you play around with them. The fact that you work with shapes in this game that you can scale to different sizes is a really good idea though and I wish other similar games would steal that system.

In terms of gameplay I wonder how good it will end up becoming. If there's nothing interesting to do aside from building a spaceship then I'm not sure how much time I'd actually invest into the game. the idea of having a ship crewed by multiple people does sound fun, assuming I can actually get my friends to play.

As for building hitch, i love avorion, there is no interior part of ship building tho, unless you go crazy on block count. Might want to take a look. As for starship evo, from the REALLY small amount of time i went in, i liked the freeform building. You basicly choose the size of the block, shape and all that.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

hey peeps,

So in terms of BUILDING--imo it is the best out there in terms of fun/accessibility/aesthetics. I havent messed around with it for a couple of days atm, but the plan right now is for a barebones release in about a month. It won't be finished by a long shot, and very EA, but if want to get in on it early, the building is still great fun and there will be some basic combat.

I popped in and tried out the tutorial. It's quite cool how it's built entirely with ingame devices.

The building is fun, but I'll hold off until there is some actual gameplay.

A wise choice, I'm very wait and see on the gameplay. Hopefully, it'll swiftly progress pass *just* survival, but we'll see.

Yeah, I get that, but I'm personally having fun being able to make my own starship that I can move around a flick individual switches on to do this and wiring up all the logic. It should get better eventually, but it's already pretty great for me.

Also, I've since last time made a lot of progress on my fighter.
