Old Topic:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hey peeps, so Skywanderers has been recently rebranded and is now approaching "release"--May 21st to be exact. Check out the old topic for my incredible levels of hype when the project was announced.

Alot has changed, mostly for the better it seems. But this time around, I won't hype it. Check out either the steam page or the game discord for yourself and decide. There's some great building going on.

Addendum: I think the word might still be out on the quality of game mechanics past building ships and AI and multiplayer, so... not one for immediate hype anymore IMO, but one to watch still for sure.

Woah. So basically Space Engineers that can run on something less than a supercomputer, the fun of Minecraft building, mixed with legos and an infinite universe? My only disappointment is that I can't throw money at it yet.

Edit: I just watched the trailer and holy shit this really is the sci fi game I've dreamed of. Everything they have done design wise just seems... right. From the shadow of the gas giant, to the holomap, the interior design, combat and the scale.... wow. The graphics are simple and pleasing too, nothing too complex but done in a great art style. If this game doesn't flop and doesn't pull a NMS in terms of advertising... it will be great.

... all I can say is that the title is, apparently, one word. Not two. Searching for sky wanderers on youtube will mostly get you a bunch of stuff not even tangentially related. Get rid of the space and material for the game will start showing up more readily.

Good to know. Also, I changed the title and OP just in case. Danke for that.

EDIT: For anyone reading, I strongly encourage you to check out the youtube page. Like... damn, there is stuff in there I thought I would never see in a voxel based building game.

the website's style made me remember Scrumbleship (still waiting on that one).

i just hope it doesnt come with the whole motion sickness effect of the rest of the voxel based games. i see that its not completelly around square blocks, but still. i like Avorion because it was playable, but i was never able to do much in Starmade because of the similarities to Minecraft camera and movement.

this looks cooler than them however. PTW

I'm posting here to watch, tentatively, and with expectations in check. And fingers crossed, because this COULD be glorious.

Yes, the gods of indie development are fickle indeed. Personally, I'm very optimistic, but I think we'll have to wait for a alpha or beta release to judge where this game could truly go.

Woah this is incredibly impressive. There's enough there in the videos that it's clear he's not just making stuff up or showing just the bits that work.

My worry is just that it'll be too sandboxy - I enjoy that kinda thing, but I hope there's actual stuff in the galaxy to explore that isn't just terrain.

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.

The Dev has stated that he plans on adding both factions and what appear to be RPG elements. Which would be lit, but thats the part that I personally remain cautious about--it's where Starmade and 'n' number of other games got hung up.

it seems there's a FAQ in their subreddit

-Currently you can only build spaceships and space stations. In the future, once planetary tech is implemented fully, you will be able to build bases planetside.

-Use an expansive logic system based on logic gates to automate and move blocks. From sliding doors, to elevators, to openable ship canopies, landing gears and cargo hatches, anything that you can think of.

-Customize the interior and exterior of your ship with smaller bricks, using a "stud" system to connect them, think Lego bricks.

-Explore a realistically sized galaxy, filled with planets and moons.

-You will be able to mine resources and process them with specific manufacturing and processing blocks.

-Bounty hunt: hunt down criminals and turn them in for a profit.

-Craft commodities with an expansive industrial manufacturing system (Think of Factorio, Industrialcraft or Buildcraft)

-There will be dungeons to explore, filled with rare loot and resources. But they will contain dangerous enemies.

-Play with your friends, via either dedicated servers or LAN, cooperatively or aggressively.

-Old school FPS combat will be possible, but the game is still early in development.

What does the game do to avoid the... Super duper long ship creation and remaking ships thing?

If there is one thing that always kills me about these games it is that. (Mind you I LOOOOVE spending a long time making a ship to an extent... Not... Space Engineers long mind you.) Only so many times I can recreate my hull

Uncertain, though it appears to at least have rudimentary blueprint functions, presumably with automated assembly down the road.

Yeah that's one of the things that alsays gets me in these types of games, making sightly hulls is difficult, but fun when you get it right. If any of you have played Interstellar Rift, ship design in that game is a lot easier and The Sims-esque with how rooms work.

In any case this seems like ship design would be nicer with the whole lego thing, and at the very least if you build a super big ship it won't lag as much because of the humble art style.

indeed. time will tell, they have just been greenlighted so there's a lot to see while they prepare the early access or whatever.
