Three Captains

It's not perfectly quiet at the Three Captains, but it might as well be. The Mongoose stands ready, with her two escorts waiting and watching for any inbound threat.

The threat comes in the form of a trio of enemy skiffs. Both Skiffs on high vigil are easily able to signal the mongoose and begin their own dives into combat while the Mongoose goes on the attack. The threat hardly seems significant, yet the captains keep their caution. Kasgyre has been devilishly tricky before, and it would be negligent not to treat these vessels as credible threats.

The battle, however, is short and decisive. The Kasgyrite vessels are simply too damn outgunned and outmaneuvered to really put up a serious fight, though they make a good attempt. Likely a probing force, and one whose absence should send a decisive message back to the Kasgyrite empire.

The transports and the new Comets arrive not long after the battle in the air, bringing with them men to revive the war on the ground.

Inside the Spire
The landing at the Spire is straightforwards enough, using an area picked for being close to the charted and previously held territory, but not one of the original landing sites where Kasgyre may anticipate an attack.

It's quiet. Too quiet. Men are offloaded from transports, MOVE-PLACE platforms are activated and set up, and the force begins moving forwards at a stable pace. For a little while, it almost seems like the remaining Kasgyrites have done the world a favor and gotten themselves eaten.

Then the incidents start happening.

A crossbow hooked to a tripwire, a debris blockade with a grenade inside, a suddenly greatly agitated swarm of giant spiders, rocks falling from spider holes, sniper bolts whipping out of the darkness. No single event takes many lives, some claim none, but the total effect is demoralizing to the men. Shots are fired down dark corridors, camps are fortified to withstand any assault, and yet... Nary a Kasgyrite is seen.

They're doing precious little to halt an advance, and there will come a time when they simply run out of room to run and hide, but their guerrilla tactics have succeeded in making the men afraid. Who knows how many of them are the darkness? It's always been said that Kasgyre has some damnable pact with the spiders, and in this place, in these web filled warrens, it feels more like the men are marching into the web of a spider queen, rather than to victory.

Aside from the numerous small-arms manufactured for the marines, three new comets are halfway to completion.

Two new squads of Marines have been trained and stand ready.



Event: The Late Savant

During recent renovations to a manor once owned by one of the greatest scientific minds in Wreth's history, a secret vault was uncovered by craftsmen. Such a chamber had been rumored to exist, as the scientist was known to be rather... unstable, despite their prodigious intellect and unparalleled ability- but such rumors had never been substantiated before now. Within the chamber were private laboratories, half-finished designs, and stacks upon stacks of notes detailing secret and ambitious designs.

Careful collations of such notes reveal that, although their paranoia and internal demons likely prevented them realizing their vision, the scientist was on the cusp of several major breakthroughs. Despite the age of the documents, there may be much to gain from a careful analysis of the late savant's notes...

Rules:
For this event you'll be creating up to three (3) designs. Each design is one of the Scientist's unfinished inventions, and thus is made from a pre-war state of mind. This is not to say that such designs cannot intrinsically utilize more advanced technology than existed in his/her day, (think of some of Nikola Tesla's more... theoretical design ideas) but you can make no mention of specific technology invented after the start of the game. The designs you put forward may be highly theoretical in nature, and you should not feel limited by the scope of the start of game technology. This challenge is about imagination, creativity, and fluff. Your three designs will be paired off in order against the three designs from the opposing nation, and in each pairing I will decide which is the 'better' theoretical mad-science design*. For each pairing you 'win' you get an extra die to spend next turn. The team that wins the majority also gets the ability to roll a prototype at advantage.

This is a competition about science, not politics. Phrases such as 'For the glory of [BLANK]' or 'Shall be the bane of the [BLANK] scum' are not allowed. Your designs should be about the science of the design, and mentioning the enemy empire, your own empire, or any combination thereof, is frowned upon heavily.

1. You may create up to 3 designs for this Event.
2. These designs may make no reference to technologies created after the war.
3. These designs should be as divorced from politics as possible- science, not propaganda.
4. Designs will be judged based on a superior 'mad-science' quotient.
5. Each 'win' nets a team an extra die.
6. The team with the majority of 'wins' gains the ability to roll a prototype at advantage.

*The product should be notionally possible and well described, not just insane cool sounding blithering.

Anyway, it's clear the situation should change. From the moment we let Kasgyre take the initiative, our losses started to mount. We designed the the anti-flanking tactic to kill the enemy, but it barely got better results than when we were succesfully ambushed.

When we let the enemy dictate the engagement, and let them fight us on their preferred terrain and at their preferred distance, that is when we started to take losses time after time. The answer is simple. Our weapons are suited for close range fighting, not for long distances. We don't have the range of the accuracy. And PLACE, PLACE is not the wunderwaffe some people think it is. It's a great defensive cannon, but it will not obliterate everything. Offensively, well you see, it's not even mentioned.

So, we need to take the fight to the enemy. That's a very simple fact.

Speculation about using tiny ones as infantry signaling/detection tools is also running rampant through the design team, but has been shelved for now since infantry do not have cores to power such a crystal, and it is unknown if Kasgyre has any weapons that would show anyway.

Please take note that plans for the "LCD" mentioned in these notes has not been found. Our best guess from these and other notes is that it stands for "Light Crystal Display", aparently some way to display information by exciting small sections of a crystal with aether. If possible this technonolgy should be explored in greater detail later if we can figure out which parts of the Aetherdar crystal are for display and which are for detection.

LCD crystals being a minor success, I have figured out how to use the "dead" areas between the light nodes to perform useful functions. By tuning these areas with the following equation, it is possible to make the light nodes change state based on anomalies in the aether flows in the local area. The larger the crystal the more sensitive it can be, and/or the longer its displayed range.

The second sketch shows how these cells link to form an actual crystal.]

Addendum: Our "glorious leader" has declared that he wants "something useful, not more pretty lights". Words fail me.

These crystals are amazing, and the engineering team is spending far too much of their time playing with them instead of working. When finally cornered they babel about super cannons and wonder armor.

Once the excitement wears off and reality finally sets in, depression on the part of the engineering team is widespread. Armoring ships with plates of these crystals would be far, far, too expensive and heavy to ever work, and while super cannons using the new crystals to seal the barrel and help focus the blast may be possible, they would use more power and cost more than the simpler SUCKERPUNCH cannons.

In short, these crystals have profound implications for making bigger cannons, but they are not quite the wonder devices the first seemed to be.

This strategy will only work well in straight corridors.

Any crossroad we encounter, any place with more than 1 thing to shoot at the same time, and PLACE will run out of shots, or be attacked before it can do something.

Oh, and it'll destroy morale, both through burns and as the GM alluded too, paranoia.

Appendix A: Executive Summary : Confidential

The requirement of this project is the construction of a Mechanical Shipboard Computer, which is referred further in the document as an MSC. The MSC needs to posses the following features.

When operated by a person authorized to operate ships by the BPWC :
- Through the manipulation of easily accessible controls, change the heading, acceleration or velocity of the vessel
- In response to the above, automatically adjust power core output as needed
- While doing so, the MSC must ascertain that the vessel remains within safe operating perimeters

In addition, the system must be capable of :
- Maintaining a course programmed in the system by the captain or an authorized individual
- Maintaining this course even with partially compromised capabilities, such as a cracked trim crystal
- Maintaining this course even in adverse weather conditions

In effect, the MSC is a system that allows a captain or other qualified individual to fly a vessel from a single console, with far better reaction speed and far greater safety. Rather than relaying orders to officers who then relay onwards to engineers, automatic electrical circuit selects the best solution to attain the desired course chance in all conditions.

316 : Personal Log

The bureaucrats have approved of my design. Of course, not the one involving aetheric frequency coupling. Nor the one involving resonant frequency paths. No. They approved of the Mechanical Shipboard Computer. How they even got those proposals, I don't know. Last I knew, they burned with lab when Grandmaster Kalen set it and herself aflame.

Well, it's been years, I could use the money, so why worry about clear sky?

318 : Yearly Progress Report

Work on the Mechanical Shipboard Computer continues at steady pace. Tests using the second generation prototype have revealed a significantly lessened change of Induced Core overloads, and greatly improved stability compared to the first generation. Tests are expected to continue until delivery of the third generation prototype.

Highlights :

Delivery of the the Third Generation dedicated power core crystal is expected to take place in 3 months. Compared to previous generations, it contains 75% less errors, and should provide a far clearer power signal. As discussed in appendix B, a stable calibration current is essential for stable operation.

In order to improve system performance and stability, internal wiring systems have been reorganized. This should eliminate crossovers and short circuits, which were responsible for the incident in Q1 317.

Redesign of the gyroscopic stabilization system. Through the introduction of a third gyroscope, automatic calibration of the 3-axis inertial navigation systems is now a possibility. This should resolve lingering issues with axial drift, which were an issue in long demonstration flights.

320 : Personal Notes

They cancelled it. The Madmen. Three years we worked on it. Three hard years, of effort, wasted. All because the oaf at the ministry couldn't keep his hands of the controls. A system so simple that an idiot could fly it, they demanded. We invented it, designed it, build it, but how could we have known they'd send the minister at us.

320 : Personal Notes

I had a meeting with Sir Guidevalli today. He invited me (a commoner) to the most prestigious Teahouse in the entire Spire. I must say, it's just as marvelous as they say. Heating tea over an aetheric flame, who'd think of that.

Anyway, Sir Guidevalli had somehow heard of my project on the Mechanical Shipboard Computer, and he was tremendously interested. He works in the transport business too you see. Specifically, the expedited Import and Export of sensitive goods. Bloody lucrative too. But he's having a hard time getting good crews, so he wants me to finish my project.

I must say, I had hoped to do something else for a while. My nephew has offered me an interesting job in his vattery, and it'd be a nice change of pace. Must as I like Guidevalli, I shall tell him tomorrow I must decline.

322 : Letter to Guidevalli

Work on the project still proceeds as planned. The wiring was once again an issue, but I think we tightened it down this time. The work on redesigning the core interlinks is nearly complete. The newest variant should be capable of dynamically adjusting it's expectations based on the core output, solving the navigation issues we had when flying at half Webbing.

As you requested, I have also expanded the barometers. The MSC should now be capable of navigating deep into the mist, or flying high up into the storms. I must strongly insists you avoid this. The prototype contains numerous hard to replace components, and the MSC is not capable of evading a mistmaw or aetheric bolt.

I must also report my dissatisfaction with the latest batch of strings I have received. Nearly half of the examples provided showed serious degradation after 2 weeks of operation, and a quarter was either too strong or too weak. This is no minor issue. The springs are essential in the inertial acceleration system. Without them, the MSC is incapable of correcting it's speed or acceleration, with potential dangerous results.

324: Wrethian Gazette

Aetherstorm of the century

A tremendous aetherstorm has beset Wreth. Per the orders of the Wrethian Ministry of Navigation, no citizen is to leave the inner ring of the Spire without permission. No expeditions for the surface are to leave. No ships are to leave dock. Until the storm abates, all Spires but Wreth are cut off.

Famous Philantrope Guidevalli dies in Storm

Famous Philantrope and business magnate Guidevalli has been reported death this morning. The reports of his death are yet unclear, but reliable sources say that he was struck by aetheric lightning when working on his private yacht at the Eastern docks despite government restrictions.

325: Personal Notes

It calls to me. It calls for me. I tried, really. I worked at the vatteries, at the wood vats, I even took a scribe's job in the Wrethian Board for Efficient Bureaucracy. Everywhere, it followed. An idea, an idle comment, or a usefull part. Everywhere I went, the MSC followed.

I've taken to calling it Ahab, after the mythical whaler from the old Stories. Like the hunter after the mistmaw, it follows me. Sometimes, it dissappears into the mist, and I can have a few days or weeks of peace. But it returns, always. It wants to be finished, it wants to be made whole. Like the hunter and his missing leg. Only the hunter is now machine, and I am mistmaw. Or would it be better the other way around. I don't know.

All I know is that it wants me. It wants me.

It wants to be whole.
