I agree with NUKE on every point except name. I don't care about that...

I'd like for a new hull to be our next design (by which I mean, next turn's design), yeah. Although I disagree with your idea of integrating armour into the hull- optional modular armour is better, since it gives us more flexibility when it comes to cost.

Also, I don't want to call it a frigate. And clearly the naming conventions we use are very important.

Much like mounting guns, you should really still specify whether you want a ship to mount armor or not. Mounting armor to a vessel that makes no mention of armor (like the skiff) would require a revision to modify the design, and would negatively impact performance. Some kinds of armor is comparatively easy to make modular (belt armor), but some kinds of armor have to be directly integrated into the design and paid for when you pay for the hull (an Armored Deck, although the theory behind it doesn't apply as well to airships).

Heh. I don't like the crossbow idea, not at this stage. I think we'd be much better off deploying a new ship hull ASAP,  ensuring that it's properly researched before the end of development.

Although, I *did* think of another possibility...
Hey, Draignean, would it be possible to "funnel" Aether around a person's head by the use of an aethersilk full-facemask?

Not in a way that would let you aetherboard someone. It would actually provide a decent amount of protection (although the rest of their physiology would still be effected) from a critically elevated aetheric field.

Oh, in that case, yeah, we should specify that it is capable of mounting (minimal) armour. But it still doesn't need integrated armour.

A thin copper sheathe would probably give it protection from instant annihilation from blasts of Aetheric energy.

Draig, I should've clarified. That's exactly what I meant---protecting you from the energy long enough for specialized ships to stay at high altitude for extended lengths of time, possibly even building aetheric artillery platforms that use the high energy up there to rain death from above.

We could deck the hull in silks and make the most expensive and beautiful skiff around.
Also instead of Frigate maybe a Caravel or Destroyer?

To be able to go through The Everstorm would likely grant a better tactical advantage for us over being able to go through The Calm.
That's has my head spinning a bit more.
Some kind of copper-encased ironclad-style ship to protect the crew, which has webbing somehow resistant to lightning strikes, or lightning rods to power the lift crystal using conventional electricity... Yeah I'm stumped.

No, frigate is an appropriate age-of-sail term for what I'm trying to make, I think.

As to going through obstacles..

Draig, how high into the atmosphere do the Calm and Everstorm stretch?

Frigates usually had two-three masts, and between 20 and 40 guns. They were real warships, only designed for speed rather than endurance.

Right.

Forgot about that minor issue.

I had forgotten if frigates were the single-gun-decked ships or the two-decker former ships of the line (Before being replaced by the three-decker, 100+ gun monstrosities).

Anyway.

Hmm. Oxygen tanks and aethersilk balaclava crewing artillery ships.
We've still got two or three years of back-to-back research.. this could be the only real chance to start down that track because it's going to need an insane amount of investment.

Our skiff = Gunboat
Frigate = In the 18th century, the term referred to ships that were usually as long as a ship of the line and were square-rigged on all three masts (full rigged), but were faster and with lighter armament, used for patrolling and escort.
Corvette = A small, maneuverable, lightly armed warship, originally smaller than a frigate.

They could be either.

I could go for Corvette.

Hmm... Yeah Corvette sounds like a good classification for a starter attack boat that isn't absolutely tiny like our skiff is.

We should probably hammer out a rough classification system for our boats.

Tack, I believe the conversation was deciding what to classify our next hull. I could be mistaken however...... And ninja'd by milo...

Well unless anyone has any sudden vote-flips I think we're cool to jump a year.
Madman were you going to submit an idea?
