I like smaller size.
Maybe go 33%, and if we roll poorly we can take it down to 50%

The more I think about my blast cooler, the less I like it. It would probably help at least a little across the board, but it would only help, not fix...
The "cheaper selects" revision sounds nice, but most of our non-ship equipment cannot use selects effectively. I could probably be pursuaded though...

I think the cost of selects is quite reasonable already. Trying to decrease it is likely to be difficult.

If the creator doesn't like the idea, perhaps the blast cooler is not what we want after all. Still, we need to fix the heat issue. Making it smaller will help, but will not eliminate the problem. Maybe water cooling? Or just a blast shield, like was suggested earlier.

I added you two to 'no third revision', since you didn't vote for one. I don't have time right now to determine what the best cooling/heat dispersal system would be, but whatever it is I'm voting for it. If we roll well on two PLACE revisions we could get something we could deploy without embarassment.

(Also, added the names for the PLACE size changes. Which is important)

Remember that we rolled a 2 on cost for the Itshanas.
There's going to absolutely be room for it to be cheaper.

I figure when we eventually make longrifles we'll start them off at Itshana level.
They should hopefully do nicely (and can be turned into regulars in the event of a shit roll)

Hmm. Maybe, maybe. Perhaps with a good roll we could get it down to 2:1, I guess.
But I still hardly think that's a priority. Even at 2:1, we could hardly afford to make everything out of Select crystals. Ore is just too scarce (until we finish occupying Miner's Folly).

Anyway, for cooling. The best I can come up with is water cooling, which is presumably what Kasgyr has got on their Teakettles, so we know it works. Something like

PLACE V2.0: The PLACE is simply too hot to handle. What better way to cool it down than with some water? The V2 features numerous water pipes criss-crossing the barrel, fed from a small, easily refillable tank towards the rear. The steam that inevitably results from firing the gun is routed to the front of the cannon, where it sprays out, adding insult to injury by scalding any enemy in front of the gun. (Not that that is likely to stop anything not stopped by the initial blast, but there could be lesser enemies to either side of the blast that a little steam could discourage from encroaching further).
Suggestions that we should have the steam exit through an array of wind instruments designed to play Wreth's national anthem were considered, but ultimately deemed monumentally stupid.

So I see someone mentioned that, somehow, for some reason, a wooden blast shield is not a good idea.

Well, I'm here to tell you that you can't just hit a hard-wood board with a wave of heat and have it catch fire. If you keep the wood soaked with water between uses, you'll never have a problem with it. Alternatively, you don't bother soaking it with water, and it works anyway. Hardwood won't light on fire unless we can manage to keep a continuous fire rate that prevents the heat from dissipating...which would be interesting to say the least.

I'd say we do the air cooling AND include a wooden blast shield---added protection is added protection, after all.

Thank you to milo, from whom I ripped all the technical details of
PLACE CASE: Combat Air-directing Shielded Emplacement
By placing larger section (Larger diameter) of "barrel" at the end of the LAC's standard barrel, we can allow the air to be superheated in that relatively-confined space. Vents that face forward allow that superheated air to go forwards, instead of crisping our gunners. It also deflects superheated air produced later in the plasma bolt's flight. Combined with a wooden blast shield, this protects our gunners, retains a cool acronym, and causes anyone in the hallways we might engage with to really desperately regret their position.

I really like the idea of water cooling, but that could be because of the book.
Between that and the size reduction (and luck) we might be looking at a really helpful weapon.

Also re: Itshanas- keep in mind a 2:1 is still Twice as much ore available, which means Twice as many upscaled ships.
The air could be ours, completely, that easily.

Water cooling sounds nice, but it would be complicated and you would need a constant supply of water. That said I am not dead set on air cooling either...

Edit: We now have a Discord, the join link is in the core thread. Go, and help taunt the Kasgyre scum in real time! Also, I added an appropriate first message to the Wreth channel...

Water cooling is from the original cannon, though. They have sinkboxes or something which boils off water during operation.
Shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry NUKE, I seem to have sunk your design just by voting for it.

Basically my vote was decided by the fact that the CASE doesn't need water all the time, and the cool name was just icing...

Here's a question, is it safer to discuss stuff on Discord or here?
I actually, weirdly, seem to have a lot of faith in the players not to cross-read.
Which is strange.

Speaking of safer, can we assume the 2.0's steam-blast will offset the blowback, or should it have a shield also?

Mmkay, so after a Discord discussion, it has been made clear to me that it is the shot that is superheating the air, not the barrel. Cooling the barrel won't do us any good. The only real 'solution' is a blast shield. If we made the shot less hot, we'd also be making it less destructive. Mind you, reducing the size of the gun will help in that department.

Well, the CASE has a shield too, but since word of GM is that the CASE won't work, shield only it is.
