Making Chicken trees?
« on: June 30, 2017, 02:14:11 am »

I'm planning on coming back to this game and I was just doing some browsing on the wiki, when I rediscovered feather-trees.

I realized, the fruit they produces eggs, presumably unfertilized eggs… What files but I need to change to make these into fertilized chicken eggs so that sustainable ecologically friendly self perpetuating, "natural" chicken farms can occur?
I mean of course I presume that there someway to turn them in to fertilize the eggs of other animals, but chickens would be a good place to start testing this out.

It doesn't look like you can. I checked the item token list and the only egg listed is just egg, no castes or other arguments. I didn't think you could. I looked into the Itemcorpse tag myself in order to attempt creating a self-perpetuating creature that could keep coming back from the dead whenever you killed it. You simply can't create any living thing bigger than a vermin with tags like that.

Are vermin susceptible to curses, syndromes, or transformation? A creature specific syndrome (like gnomeblight) that is "on contact" could add tags for gender, size, etc, and transform generated vermin if they are vulnerable to syndromes/curses.

Even without that tag, a vermin creature that spawns while being typed as .Animal, not .Vermin will have something like 120 cubic centimeters body size iirc - though my outpost liaison managed to kill one in 8 pages by bleeding it out, so they do have blood (and anything that has blood can get drunk).

...I'm now imagining feeding butterflies booze laced with vampire blood in adv. mode and having them drink 'nectar'.

What if you put the feather tree egg in a building similar to a nest box?

So it's like a workshop, (b)uild chicken requiring feather egg(s) to produce a chick?

If I recall you can use ADD_TAG to alter the body size of a creature? I'm not somewhere where I can check the wiki right now.

Having had the Elves leave feather tree eggs, I have to ask: Don't feather tree eggs not have shells? I seem to remember that's why they ended up smeared softly all over my trade depot, as a sort of tribute, instead of being traded properly.

Might not matter if used as a reaction to produce a vermin creature in a custom workshop/reaction.  Assuming they can be gathered, they can be used as a reagent, and thus have their base component type used to create feather tree 'chickens'. Assuming you also give them a species specific syndrome, you can use the syndrome to attach tags that are otherwise missing from this process, giving them body parts, etc.

I have a feeling that having the eggs naturally hatch, even if it WAS possible, would be a BAD idea, because lag

I am imagining a minercart shotgun full of eggs. As soon as the eggs pierce through body parts, they hatch into flesh-eating avians.

That's kinda like a minecart shotgun that shoots minecarts.

:P

The main point was to try and see if it would be possible or if it would cause some sort of crash, of course if it does work, it doesn't HAVE to be chickens but I think they make a ...safe-ish test case.
