C. This must have happened before. Consult the Imperial archives to find some obscure rule to cement your legitimacy.

You send a discrete request to the Imperial Archives. Surely, there's precedent and rules for these situations?

Turns out there are. A lot.

A forward thinking archivist decided to start investigating the question the moment word reached them that your father had disappeared. During the 6 month succession crisis they trawled through the archives, from the ancient living metal volumes to the more modern digital databases, creating an exhaustive work gathering every single rule and anomaly involved in the Imperial succession. It's a very exhaustive work, detailing incidents from before the Empire (even including a short description of an incident from just before the Great War) to your current situation now.

He was a bit disappointed when you asked for a summary.

In the end, it appears there are 3 easy ways to affirm your legitimacy. You could have your father declared incapable of rule due to the dereliction of his duties. This would solve the question without any room for doubt, but may upset some of those who still follow him. The second option is to declare yourself Imperator Regens, indicating you rule in his stead rather than being the true Emperor. This position was used in the past to deal with Emperor who had gone insane or senile, but whose disposal would be too problematic. As Imperator Regens, you are Imperator in all but name.

The last and most obvious option is to simply declare him death. By following the rituals to the letter, a constructing an impressive mausoleum, we can certainly convince the people to move on.

A . Incapable of rule
B . Imperator Regens
C . Build a glorious mausuleum

With a quick flourish, you sign the dictate. It rushes through the Imperial bureaucracy with surprising speed, and within weeks, you're known as the Imperator Regens, effective ruler of the Hetelaxian Empire until your father is either declared dead or returns to claim the throne. It's a position that's not as glorious as being the real Emperor, but it has the power, and it has pleased the people.

On more urgent matters, the third fleet has detected an unknown vessel near our outer rimward borders. They appear to be completely unaware of our presence, and are making no attempt at hiding their own. Their current trajectory takes them towards the outer edges of our territory and we expect them to enter the Demora system in the near future. The system is empty save for some of our old mining facilities, which were decommissioned 112 years ago. Automated sensor systems were left operational, if not for them, we'd never known about the vessel.

Our closest fleet is located far within our borders, but the warp drive their ships use is drastically inferior to our vessels jump drives. A squadron of our ships can enter the system no less than 10 days after the intruders arrival.

The fleet captain is asking what our policy should be regarding these alien incursion, in this and future scenarios.

A) Our borders are inviolable. Destroy their vessel.
B) Intercept their vessel and force them to turn around.
C) Deter them from our core space, beyond that, they're unworthy of our attention
D) Intercept them and bring them to us, for we wish to talk
E) Write-in?

The 5 escorts of the third fleet arrive exactly on schedule, finding that the intruding vessel in orbit above the mining facilities of Demora II. Contact with the facility indicates that they were trying to gain entrance through the use of high explosives, but were unsuccessful. The hardened walls of the facility proved impenetrable, but have been damaged. Upon detection of our vessel, they immediately commenced evacuation procedures, but our fleet was in place to cut of every escape.

Based on intercepted transmissions, we have identified the vessel as part of the Alarian Dominion, a nearby military dictatorship made out of large desert dwelling reptilians. Their current leader is Grand Marschal Remus, who appears to be an absolute dictator. They must be a fairly young race, as we find not evidence of their existence in our database, and their home planet listed as having no intelligent life. Having cracked their language, the fleet broadcast a demand to cease hostile activity and to follow them for further processing.

Seeing their escape cut off, the Allarian vessel decides to "graciously grant" our demands. Their slow vessel will take several months to arrive, so do not expect to see them until the next quarter.

At court, meanwhile, the presence of an undetected civilization is causing a bit of a stir. A few admirals are pushing for an expedition through our outer borders, so that we're not caught unaware. Others are proposing to reactivate certain decommissioned facilities, despite the enormous cost that would entail. The majority however proposes to focus our assets at home.

Options :
A : Send an expedition
B : Reactivate infrastructure
C : Do nothing

Direction :

A: Hubwards
B: Rimwards
C: Turnwise
D: Widdershins

The only way we can keep our territory is by making sure it is used to its fullest. it does not matter if flies never were seen before buzzing on the outside. Demons wait in the shadows.
