Challenge Games Thread
« on: January 31, 2007, 06:08:00 pm »

ADOM has a rather impressive array of challenge games with impossible criteria as well as striking nomenclature (names rhymes with games, dammit, and this ain't no poem), and I thought that it was truly a crime that Dwarf Fortress didn't get the same honor. So, I am proud to present the Challenge Games Thread.

(any challenge posted here goes straight to the blog)

.:Oh sh@t, elephants!:.
>Find a map with elephants (that means warm with trees)
>bring a pick and 7 skill-less dwarves
>survive past year five, and mine out the adamantine until the game ends
[special thanks to whoever did this first, I can't find your thread    :( ]

Challenge 3: The Hermit Challenge

Start with seven skill-less dwarves and a pick. Pick any region that isn't "calm." Somehow kill off six dwarves and try to survive until you get your first wave of immigrants. See if you can keep all of them fed, as well.

I guess additional food and booze could be added if it's too hard.

Outsiders:
You are not allowed to build anything inside the mountain. Stockpiles, workshops, everything goes outside. You are only allowed to dig into the mountain for stone/gems/ores (which I guess means you're allowed to bridge the inside river, chasm and magma)

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

I hate to say the wiki beat you to it, but...the wiki beat you to it.  Or at least, there's a few ideas over there along these lines.

Edit: UBB apparently doesn't like spaces in URLs.  Let's see if a %20 will make it happy...

Edit: Turns out the anchor had an underscore in it anyway.

Isolationists/Runaways

Pick a location that has no trade to any race but goblins. Give your dwarves no skills. Let them have a pick/axe and a hand full of seeds. Your life Expectancy will most likely be short. Even better if the location is Sinister/Terrifying. Trying this now. Might post on their progress later.  Wish them luck.

Breeder Fortress.

The only rule is this: All dwarves that can exist in the fortress under a natural environment must have been born in the fortress.

Basically, NO IMMIGRATION.
Trade with other species is allowed, but each dwarf that lives in the fortress must be a decendant of the original 7* with the exception of the nobles. Obviously, dwarves will eventually be dying from old age left and right, assuming the fortress lasts that long.

*8 or 9, depending on wether or not the metalsmith had an apprentice /spouse, and both survived the trek to the entrance

Actually, the only way someone becomes a spouse in Dwarf Fortress right now is if they immigrate already married.  Freindships never become marriages as things are now.  (It's a Req or Bloat to add this in.)

Therefore, if your metalsmith doesn't come with a spouse, you will never have more than 8 dwarves.  You're basically rolling a die on whether your fort will survive, and you can't even view the result until the first summer.

Well, this is presuming that 7 dwarves aren't enough to make a fort survive, but to advance up the noble chain, you /do/ have to get 20 just to get the baron, 50 for the duke, and 80 for the count.  Almost all nobles, including all of the economy, are shot without at least 20 dwarves.  And the philosopher -- 100 dwarves!  That's a whole lot of breeding for just two bearded runts.

Are you certain? That doesn't sound right, considering the fact that if it were true, the child the metalsmith herself or his spouse has wouldn't be able to marry either, which means you'd be stuck with just 10-22 dwarves... Assuming the mother doesn't die in child birth or from old age and manages to push a new kid out at the highest rate possible.

Either way, it'll give me time to get that damn tree farm running and making more beds.

I'll get those up now, and the ones from the wiki, but not the Breeder Fortress on account of its impossibility.

EDIT- Those ones on the wiki just aren't any good... I think I'll leave them there.

EDIT 2-They're up. Does anyone think we should put these on the wiki, too?

Similar to Breeder fortress, different objective:

The Exiles

No immigration.  Dig too deep.  I'm nearly certain that this can be done with some planning.  Obviously the demons will be the tough part, but I think I have a way.. we'll see.

If the good ol' retracting bridge "exploit" still exists than it shouldn't be impossible.

The game has been won with 1 dwarf, using the demon-crushing-bridges method. Without that, I don't know. Maybe you could use six of your dwarves as distractions for the demons while the seventh is busy mining adamantine?

Yes, Mechanoid, I'm sure.  Toady said it himself in a previous thread.  Please note that you also posted in that thread, both before and after he said as much.

The feature is listed as bloat93.  It requires another bloat to further specify dwarf personalities, which means immigrant dwarves would probably be further specialized such that immigrating couples were made sure to have matching personalities as well.
