Njall raises an eyebrow at the code of plunder, but chooses to say nothing. No wonder the captain's missing an arm with rules like that. Suppose he's too old to learn.

Standing there in his black and white facepaint and his leathers covered in metal studs, he decides to just go along with it for now.

Úlfr's face grows dark, but he doesn't comment, merely readying his gear. He doesn't like the idea of stealing from priests, but he had his orders, and he was honor-bound to follow through with them. A piece of him did stir with curiousity: what was in those tomes that the priests copied? After all, if you take a book, you're not stealing the knowledge inside it, since that knowledge is in someone's head, and can just be put down on paper again. He perks up at this thought, it helps him get ready to attack.

Religion check. What does Gunnvor know about the priests of the Righlanders?

You recall a text you once studied written by a northman traveller to Righland, describing their religion and priests. Righland's priests and religious personnel are Gwirfydists (Creidmfists, in the Righland tongue.) The appointed priests are "druids" and typically wear comfortable brown robes. They deliver religious services on the Moon's Day of each week, gathering locals to their church, a circular building with great arched doors in the eight directions (north, south, east, west, and the intermediaries,) preaching an ancient tale about the exploits of Lugus, the gods, or the heroes of old from a circular pulpit centered on a sundial.

There is also a subset of religious men who are not ordained priests, monks. They wear much rougher robes and famously cut their hair into "tonsures", leaving a ring around their head but the scalp bald. They live in monasteries, buildings in sacred mountains and forests, where they contemplate religion, farm their own food, and most notably copy books. Relevantly for you, these places tend to be lightly guarded, but their chapels tend to be as richly decorated as proper churches, with golden and silver iconography abounding. In this place and age, with no easily available way to copy books short of writing them out multiple times, books also fetch a fine price at market.

"You know more about raiding the mainland than I would, Captain. Unless you have some sort of battering ram we can borrow, I believe we're about as well-equipped to take the chapel as we can be."

You trek through a forest, thick but with a well-trod path, for perhaps an hour, the high canopy just barely tinged with the first traces of fall. The smell of leaves and wood is carried on a brisk, early-autumn wind. Golden sunlight spills through the forest, and a sense of serene calm pervades the woods. But you know somewhere inside, for better or for worse, that sense will not last long at all.

The sun is on the verge of setting when you break through the treeline. A rocky hilltop stands before you, and perched atop it, a quaint stone building sits. Nearest you, it has squat, rectangular walls, two stories high, being perhaps thirty feet wide and fifty feet long. High, small windows and a double door on its narrow end adorn the mossy walls. On the far end of the rectangle, the building becomes what looks to be a three-story tower, thirty feet wide, with high, arched stained-glass windows in the eight directions. Behind the building, you can make out a meager field, from which the monks make their sustenance.

You do not see a single person outside the monastery, but you can hear the sounds of prayer.

Njall rumbles to himself, warming up his voice with a continuous, alternating menacing growl as he advances behind the others.

Follow behind and prepare self for impending battle.

Out of the Shieldmaiden's field of view (but in sight of his other companions), Úlfr rolls his eyes, as if to say "What else besides friendly intentions could a heavily armed warband of Mungarðrians possibly have?"

Not having much stock in the likelyhood of pleasentries, Úlfr readies his bow for battle.
