SPAMDRAGON: Swamp Baron
« on: June 02, 2017, 01:36:31 pm »

You stir, your spindly limbs moving through the warm viscosity of amniotic fluid and pressing against the shell that surrounds you.  Exerting your newfound strength, you feel the shell crack and feel the strange sensation of light pressing upon your newly-opened eyes.  With a little more effort you push the shell open entirely and scrabble out of your egg, blinking in the rosy evening light.

You look around and words bubble to the surface of your mind, fed to you by your ancestral memories.  Tree.  Murk.  Swamp.  The air is muggy and thick with buzzing insects.  The shards of your egg, shimmering like jewels, are nestled in the knot of a mangrove tree's root, keeping it above the sodden ground.  You stretch out limbs and wings, luxuriating in the joy of motion as you devour the last of your amniotic fluid.  The gnawing edge of hunger is sated for the moment, but it can only be held at bay for a time.  Still, the egg shards gleam attractively to you.

You are a Dragon.  You are presently the size of a kitten, and newly-hatched you lack fire and your wings are too spindly to support flight.  What will you do now?

A) You're still hungry.  Maybe try and catch some of these insects for food?
B) You're still hungry.  Maybe look around at some of this plantlife and try and gather up some food?
C) You're still hungry, and these insects look a bit small.  Maybe try and hunt something big and tasty?
D) Ooh, your shell fragments look shiny.  Maybe you should find somewhere to hide those so nobody else can take them.

You sniff around, letting the melange of scents from the swamp rush into your nostrils.  There are the chitinous scents of many insects, but none of them interest you.  Instead, you smell something musky and meaty and head off straight towards where you think you smell it, scurrying past various swamp bushes, trees and reeds until you reach a patch of firmer ground.

Huh, that's weird.  You swear you could have smelled something here.

You turn around and stare into the eyes of some sort of huge bristly creature with tusks, who looks livid at your encroachment into its territory.  Your mind supplies the word 'boar'.

A) Run!  This thing is easily a dozen times our size!
B) Take this bastard head on!  You've got claws and teeth yourself.
C) Try and outmanoeuvre the boar to get an advantage.
D) Lure the boar deeper into the swamp in the hopes of entrapping it somehow.

You feint a retreat, scurrying through the muck of the swamp, the enraged boar charging after you.  You are light where the boar is heavy, and your keen eyes make out the constitution of the swamp easily enough.  You leap over a particularly soft spot, using your spindly wings to aid your jump, and find safe purchase on a wiry bush's stem as the boar charges over the sinkhole and plunges deep into reed-strewn water.

You have the advantage and manage to leap onto the boar's back and start slashing at its neck with your claws and tearing open blood vessels with your teeth.  Its blood tastes glorious in your mouth.  Unfortunately, the boar is pretty strong and hard to kill.  It throws you off its back and you hit the muck rolling.  You've scored some wounds on the pig, but it's still raging.

The boar is starting to clamber out of the hole.

A) Damn it all.  Use the opportunity to flee, this thing's pretty hard to kill.
B) Go for it head on and fight tooth and claw!
C) You could probably get back onto its back again, if you were fast enough.
D) Maybe it will fall for a trap a second time?

You trust to your newborn limbs and launch yourself over the boar, narrowly missing being gored by its tusks as you glide over it.  The boar, although it is nearly out of the pit, cannot really turn around in its present circumstances, so you land behind it and crawl right back up onto its back again.

You dig back into the wounds you made before, savaging the arteries in the boar's neck.  As you work at tearing out its throat it struggles out of the pit, then tries to shake you off - but it has lost too much blood.  Its struggles become more sluggish until eventually it lets out a final groan and collapses.  Licking the blood from your snout you begin to tear strips of meat from the corpse and wolf them down.  Would be better cooked, but the flesh is still hot and that's good enough for you.

You have gained Glory for defeating a (relatively) powerful foe.

You eat your fill late into the night, and feel confident you can hunt such creatures in the future.  Now you just need somewhere to drag future kills, sleep and of course store anything shiny you find, such as those jewelled egg shells you hatched in.  Looks like you should find a lair.

A) To the trees!  We can build a nest in the branches away from predators.
B) To the dirt!  We should be able to dig out a hiding hole in the firmer ground and rest up there.
C) To the drawing board!  It will be a lot of work, but maybe we could build some sort of wicker and wood nest here on ground level?
D) To the unknown!  Go searching for some existing lair.  Maybe we can force something else out.

A Safety from bigger predators is a good idea.
