its simple humans have foreign weapons and armor right so when you get them from trading or "other" means you can study them and your dwarfs will learn how to craft them

Expansion: A "Copy Item" command. Can be used both on foreign items (copy the item enough times, and you'll gain the ability to make it as a native craft) and regular dwarf-make stuff that you just want exact multiples of. Instead of ordering
1. Dye woolen cloth with redroot dye
2. Make cloth into cloak
3. Dye cave spider silk thread with dimple cup dye
4. Decorate cloak with thread (hope it randomly chooses thin crosses!)
you can just take an existing red cloak with blue thin crosses, and order 9 copies of it, one for each member of your Royal Guard. The more levels of Organizer your Manager has, the greater the intricacy of items that they can order to be copied (especially if they have to order the production of raw materials that don't yet exist, like wool that's still on the sheep).

Im pretty sure while a dwarf might appreciate a well made replica or a 'fake' actually making forgeries of artifacts or things of interest is absolute heresy

- For image inscriptions, choose real life subjects inside a cage in order to chisel out your next statue or engraving by copying its 'likeness'

Yeah, artifacts would have to be a special case. I was thinking that the dwarf would use the same kind of material to make the same kind of item, mimic some (but maybe not all) of the decorations, and the copy's description would include the text "This item was made in homage to the artifact [artifact name], created in [year] by the dwarf [original craftsdwarf]". And, of course, no dwarf below the rank of Master would even dare to attempt copying an artifact anyway.

Oooh, I hadn't considered that. I was thinking that you could make one engraving by copying another engraving, but yeah, it's better to be able to order a workshop to make a statue (or wall to be engraved), and then have the option to choose a creature/item (including engravings) to model.
