I'd like to point out that we avenged the loss of the Rainbow Scepter by taking the territory of Zasitost. Shortly thereafter our efforts there yielded a population increase that increased our tax income. A little while after that we got the Mixed Metals mine in formerly dwarf lands. We've held the land long enough that it has, in fact, repaid the monetary cost of the scepter, and also of the payment to the dwarves that ended the war on that occasion. It could even be argued that it has repaid the cost of buying extra food in years of bad weather.

The Great Betrayal struck me very personally: this all went down right after the prophecy was delivered and I had just made an effort (apparently successful) to persuade everyone to attack Ceodwell and leave Zasitost in peace. I was doing my level best to preserve good relations. If they had demanded outright, "Give us more money or we'll destroy your Scepter," I probably would have voted to pay. It was the unjust pretense to which I objected; and even then I only voted for a negotiation that failed and not outright refusal.

But as I said, we took a revenge that in cash has brought us at least even and probably a little ahead in the long run. Perhaps Cyl (nor I) can not forget. Yet cooler heads might conclude, rightly or wrongly, that further enmity is a worse threat to the Empire than a diplomatically convenient amnesia.

I don't think that numbers and cash really matter that much. To me it's all about revenge, and making sure that the 'scoreboard' is even. Destroying Zasitost might be appropriate revenge if the dwarves hadn't fucked with us afterwards.

Now we owe the dwarves revenge twice over and they've basically proven we can't "forget" because even when they are ahead on the revenge wheel they'll still going to periodically fuck us over.

Remember, an eye for an eye leads to your enemies being blinded as you gorge out their last eye, making them unable to take out your own eyes! The dwarves have two lumpy ocular lobes left to scrape out of this land.

From their moronic point of view, a few Methiant criminals stole some of their sheep or something, and that was enough of a slight to deserve destroying the Sceptre. We then looted one of their tombs, which I suppose is worth getting a bit antsy over. Either way they're dicks for escalating this problem and proving that violence and money are the only two words they understand.

That's a stopgap measure at best though. If we pay the dwarves money now, we'll also have to pay them money in the future to keep them happy. And again in the future after that. And then as the king after Cyl. And the king after that king. And then in the next spamkingdom. Forever.
