The wine traders had their barrels stamped with 'heathen' markings and then emptied (few got smashed apart in an occassional fisticuff) but there were no casualties amongst merchants themselves. The Damdamians have told your merchants that they're heathens, no longer welcome in Damdamian markets.

As for the incident itself...

A) They've assaulted my merchants and destroyed my merchandise! That's pretext for war!!
B) To be honest, I'm surprised it didn't occur sooner.

As for the wine trading...

A) I will find them merchants a new place to trade wine at. Maybe Helliste? Or Gubta?
B) More delicious, sparkly wine for us! I'm sure we can profit from selling it around the Empire.

Eh? It's pretty obvious they're doing this because of the whole crusade thing, not to oppress the people. And traders aren't usually the little people, in fact I imagine they tend to be quite rich. And I highly doubt they would actually follow such a code of rights, considering how much they dislike us.
