The beakmen themselves are quite enthusiastic about their wares, and from their frantic grunting and chirping and exposition of their gifts, your scholars came to a sudden realization - these are not gift-givers, these might be missionaries. Even before language barrier has been broken, the beakmen are already attempting to gain followers for their faith amongst your unfeathered brethren. Your scholars assume that their religion is related to some giant bird (or birds) and an even larger thing than them all - the sun.
