Stuck in Trees
« on: May 21, 2017, 06:52:12 pm »

This is getting really annoying. I've lost 5 legendary dwarves to being stuck in trees.
What else can I do besides never tell them to collect fruit using a stepladder?

Has the developer ever mentioned his ETA on fixing this?

Well, a dwarf stuck in a tree can walk from tree to tree along the branch sections, so take that zone where you have a fruit-collection operation and z-up to find those clumps of branchs and then pick good spots to build two z's of up/down stairs leading adjacent to those branches, so that for any given clump of trees, there will be a stairs down for them that they can reach from the trees.

Take an hour to read some of the forum posts here..

Check out here, where you can review bug history and get a grasp of how many bugs have existed at points in time. This fruit-gathering bug is there in one form or another. If you have read enough of the DF Announcement posts, you'll have an idea of how versions are released and bugs fixed.

Check out here, where contributors have helped out.

Bug fixing (unless it's a natural part of development) occurs after each release. The next release of course has no eta, but seems to be winding down to the last few months.

Crashes (weapon traps for sure plus whatever new crashes artifacts cause) take priority followed by other stuff (seemingly random, not everything, never pleasing everyone).

Almost everyone is being affected by the killer tree bug. But that doesn't mean it'll be high priority (build a staircase - bug over) or that the causes will be easily understood. It certainly doesn't seem to be the kind of bug which would be put aside until development is focused on that area though.

Best you can do is provide new information and saves to the bug on the tracker. The more data provided, the easier to solve it becomes.

Cut down the tree the dwarf is in. If your Dwarves are going to die of thirst/starvation up there anyway, you may as well try to get them down and have some of them live. Even if they wind up with broken bones, or get unlucky and break their neck, you'll lose less dwarves than if you leave them up there. Although, if your military keeps getting stuck in trees while chasing flying things, then cutting them down is the easiest option as they'll have metal armor and are far less likely to get injured from falls because of how the game calculates fall damage (basically takes a chunk of whatever you land on and gives you a smack with it).

But yeah, this is an issue. Although, I usually wind up solving it by just deforesting the zone immediately around my fort. It's not like the elves have ever been a threat to anyone with steel armor barring unlucky shots to the eyes.

Either build scaffolding up to them, or fell the tree.

Why are dorfs going outside for anything other than logging and defence anyway?

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I essentially quit the game last year after losing my star dwarves to starvation as a consequence of this bug for three play throughs in a row. Even if it were avoidable, I didn't notice they were stuck until they were dead.

Has this been fixed since? I see a new major version was released with wonderous things I'd like to try.

Why are you telling your legendary dwarves to go out on the surface to collect plants? Not only will they get stuck in trees, they're first to die in case of an ambush or siege.

Tell your good dwarves to stop plant gathering and get a group of dwarves who do nothing but gather plants.

(Why don't you want to disable collecting fruit from trees?)

Cause there is food and water up there for noobs for the first few years. Also, because there are only so many dwarves for the first few years. Until I actually dig down and get everything situated, there is alot going on, on the surface.

Is this command to stop them from gathering from trees specifically? Or are you referring to turning off gathering all together?

It was supposed to have been fixed in 44.01, yes. Dwarves are on a timer, after a while they'll think about where they are and climb down. Not sure how well it actually works though.

d-p only targets small plants on the ground anyway, but a gathering zone has three options, the first disallows tree climbing, its on by default. Makes gathering as safe as the surface can be.

I have seen dwarfs climb down walls to get off buildings. I have not seen them climbing down trees yet but suspect they do, since no dwarf has died in a tree recently.

Plant gathering only takes place in gathering zones or on designated plants. So if they're getting stuck while collecting from gathering zones, you can go the zone settings (open zone menu, hover over zone) to set what dwarves can do in that zone (gather plants from ground, collect fallen fruit, gather fruit from trees).

I wish dorfs stuck in trees would generate a pathing-error message like "Stuck in a tree! HELP!!"...
