I saw some thread on FacePunch Studios about it, and a bunch of the stories caught my fancy, but I heard the learning curve was steep so I was sort of scared away.

About a month later, after forgetting about it, the "3d" version was released and I thought "Oh what the hell" and downloaded it.

The developer of the Zombie Master half life 2 modifications hijacked a thread for it, and I investigated. Once I heard it had shit graphics, I was totally in, because I like to defy the graphics whores.

Eve Online forums here.

I read the thread, and gave it a not very serious try. It wasn't the graphics the put me off at first, but the UI. But this friggin thread, it just kept going on forever and ever and all those stories new players had to tell about their failures which all, and I mean every single one of them, spelt pure awesomeness.

So I convinced myself to try it again. Got myself a tileset right away because I thought I would lose enough time finding out how to play before I actually get to play, and I didnt wanna spend any more time on deciphering the matrix.

I haven't been playing for months now, I don't know, I need a very special mood for DF, but I love it, and in my book it's the bestestest videogame ever made.

Hrm. I can't remember. I know it was still 2-D... Hrg. It wasn't Digg... Not a magazine... Not a friend of mine... Not any forum I remember... Hur. I wasn't even on this computer... The laptop was still functional... I may very well have been trawling Wikipedia: perhaps just Googling "free RTS" or something like that. I know I wasn't referred here by any major website... Blast. Oh well.

I think I heard about it first on USENET, probably rec.games.roguelike.misc, back in 2006 or thereabouts. Very early 2D version. I did download it, but didn't put any time into it until much later when I read the Boatmurdered saga via a link from some game blog or other.

I first played it after reading an article in the Australian magazine, PC PowerPlay. After downloading the game off of the included DVD I was hooked.

Oh boy! My turn! (^0^)

Well, I first heard of this WONDERFUL!(>^-^<) Game when I had beaten Adom for the fif-teen somthingth time!(^-^);; Seeking to start another challenege I tried the forums, (which were some other website's forum, where the admin hosts offcial ADOM high scores) bored I decided to check other rouge likes, found DF in a topic. Which really didn't mention it allot (-.-) from what I read it really didn't sound interesting, some more time passes, and I check those boreds again, and say what the hell! \(^o^)/

Than after hours,(days really!) of playing I make this post! (@,@);

I first learned about this game off of the zombie master forum. I believe angry lawyer posted somthing there a long long long time ago... 10 or so versions before 3d I think.

Wikipedia, was looking up roguelikes for the hell of it and followed a link to DF, so yeah, downloaded it and got hooked

Three panel soul here. I played it before even reading boatmurdered, and I have to say, the interface was hell back then. But I found the idea of dwarves carving out a living in mountains to be strangely appealing, and once I discovered that there was a Z-axis I was happy.

(This game is not 3-d, what are you talking about?)
(Place the beds inside? what constitutes as inside?)

I'm at work, so I will have to check when I get home, but it was featured in either GFW or PC Gamer.  Feel in love with the game's graphics and interface before even downloading it.
