I saw it on some "top indie games" list that I stumbled upon. The only other game that I remember was on the list was Cave Story. It was over a year ago.

I wonder what DF would be like today if there had been no boatmurdered... Probably a lot less players, and thus less donations.

The goons sure do have a lot of influence around the internet, or at least the parts people like those who play DF would frequent.

Anyway, I first heard about it on the xkcd forums. Saw a link, downloaded it, messed around for a few minutes. I found a link to the wiki and boatmurdered. I read about halfway through boatmurdered, then promptly linked it to several friends. The rest is history.

The age of wonders forum at heavengames 2 years ago. The thread was about Dominions 2 i think and there was a slight references to dwarf fortress and i had to check it out.

From a discussion in the BSS forum (Black Sea Studios, who make Knights of Honor, which published by Sunflower, which in turn makes the anno / A.D. series.) from someone when there is a discussion about which game you play now (yes, it's a dieing game. However it's a masterpiece so I seriously encourage all of you to try the demo! You could buy the game online. On the Paradox's Gamersgate).

Someone mentions a complex, fun RTS. I thought what, but it's a fantasy. I didn't exactly like dwarves, and I still mod the human myself, however I really like Fantasy genre. However, I read the forum first, good, so my first fortress up-and running, with the wiki's help, until a tremendous cavein. FUN.

Yep, DF is well known now, compared to what it was ~2 years ago.
Just try to do a google search for example.

TV Tropes.  I think I started from Good Bad Bugs, saw the mention, then went on to Gorn, Malevolent Architecture, and their Let's Play page, then read Boatmurdered.
