Ah...and as for me, I heard about DF on an IRC channel years ago. IIRC it was the clanbase IRC channel.

I first heard about df when a friend told me about it.

The only others place I've seen it are wikipedia (though I only looked up 'dwarf' because of dwarf fortress) and tv tropes (which I only heard about from a thread on this forum).

I read about it after reading the Yahoo article "Top 10 free games," which was actually featured on my homepage for a few hours.  I never tried any of the other games though, and I can't seem to find that article.  Still, finding DF was definitely worth it.

I play a nation sim game, Cybernations. On the offsite forums of my alliance (not that I usually join gaming clans; in most cases, I can't stand them, but in that game, you pretty much have to join one if you don't want your ass handed to you), someone made a topic about Dwarf Fortress. We even started a succession game, but it died out because the third person was nowhere to be seen and nobody else cared about it. "It" being the succession game, not DF.

I found it.

I was bored, looking at different freeware games. I ended up finding WWI Medic and played it for a few days til i got bored and remembered that there was other games on this strange but somehow interesting "Bay12 Games" site

and that lead me to find DF, thou it took me about another 2 weeks of reading about it, reading the wiki, and then finally trying it out before i got the hand of it......and here i am

I heard about it on my last attempt at getting back into playing RetroMUD; never able to really get into it before I burn out. Anyway several people were chatting about doing this and that with their dwarves (honestly can't remember anymore) and though it sounded rather silly at times, it was also interesting to read their comments. I tried to resist at first as I usually have more then enough to be doing. That failed and I just had to see what these people were raving on about, after that I was hooked; and with it that attempt of playing RetroMUD died.

I found out about it from the Sluggy Freelance board. It sounded interesting so...yeah. I think I've put more time into DF now then pretty much any other game except maybe Civ II, Civ 3, or Diablo II. All three of which I heavily modded.

My brother came to visit for the holidays and he kept mumbling something like "New DF version , levels, can't wait". I asked him what he was talking about and he said " The game where elephants shall murder everyone." (He was talking about Boatmurdered, of course.)
Oookay....
He showed me the game but it took me a few months to really play it. I'm not an expert but I do enjoy playing.
