There was a comment about in an article on the Escapist.  I became vaguely interested, googled it, then played for a few hours with the aid of the wiki then almost quit because it was both complex and unintuitive.

But I kept at it, and was greatly rewarded.  Hmm... I'm wondering if we should bug Toady about bundling a manual congealed from the wiki with the releases.  Or at least whipping up a fan manual for portability's sake.

Side-note: Funny thing I've noticed is that other tilesets than the original ones now confuses the buggers out of me. "DF is not meant to look like this!" I keeps telling myself. Anyone else experiencing this?
Definitely.  The tilesets are now more bizarre to me than the ASCII graphics originally were.

Boatmurdered was linked to on a (truly horrible) forum for a different indie game that I used to be interested in.  I gave DF a shot, but couldn't get into it due to the near-vertical learning curve that reminded me of the games I used to play on the Apple IIc.  About a month later somebody on that forum started up a succession game, and after reading the accounts of all the hilarious and horrifying things that happened, I knew that I had to give it another chance.  Fortunately somebody on that forum showed me the DF Wiki and a list of graphics packs, and when I tried DF for the second time, I got over the hump and actually learned how to play.

This coincided with my getting truly sick of the nickle-and-diming way the console manufacturers are doing business nowadays (I was so pissed off at the launch of Mercenaries 2 that I handed my 360 and a box of games to some random dude on the street), so I have a lot more time to play Dwarf Fortress anyway.

CC, yes.  If their mods would enforce the actual written rules instead of imaginary unwritten ones, and hand out a few summary IP bans when people were elitist about how long they'd been playing the game, that forum would be a tolerable place.  Oh well, I guess Toady gets my dollars instead of Data.

Yeah, I registered my copy of CC last week when it dropped to $9, but it rubs me the wrong way how Data can't even be bothered to include changelogs in his releases, much less actually update his dev log.  If I had a community like that, I'd be apathetic too, I guess.

The Gamasutra article, or possible some other article or blog linking to it.
That lead to boatmurdered, and after reading the whole thing I knew I had to try the game.

I was looking at an IRC one night when they were talking about DF.

And that got me interested. I think that IRC also got me to play Rome:Total War, and planetside.
