Feel in love with the game's graphics and interface before even downloading it.

Well now! This is the sentence what you basically never see, when the people are talking about DF.  ;D
You are very unique I must say.  :)

Eh, what can I say?  I cut my teeth in computer gaming on Apple IIes and Atari 800s.  Game play over graphics anyday.

I saw it on Three Panel Soul and thought "ooh, that looks fun, almost makes me wish I played computer games," then promptly forgot about it.

A week or so later I saw it linked in the xkcd forums, decided to try it, and here I am.

I absolutely agree, gameplay is the most important to me also.  :)

Bro told me about it, told me a story about a dwarf who went deep into the mountain, made a artifact axe, went insane, then came out and killed all but one dwarf. The journal of that dwarf told the story to those who visited. Of course, I now realize couldn't happen, but it convinced me.

Several places.

RPG.net was probably the first time I ever heard of it, seeing the game mentioned in a motivational poster (a couple actually). I was boggled the first time playing it, lost interest for a moment, then read Boatmurdered and a more recent succession on Something Awful's LPs list. Decided I should have another go at it, DL'ed a graphics pack for it to understand it quicker, and fell in love with the game once I got the hang of it.

Unfortunately, I still have much to learn before I make forts as awesome as everyone else's. How long did it take everyone (fort attempts/dwarven casualties) until things got more interesting (complex machinery, functional armies, magma forges, etc.)?

As I recall, back in November I was browsing the Penny Arcade forums and saw a thread titled "[Game On]Dwarf Fortress - Child cancels eat: Caged" or something like that, and there's no way I can ignore a hanging line like that.  After reading a bunch of hilarious posts, I Googled Dwarf Fortress, and saw the link to the SA LP archive of Boatmurdered.  A day later I was hooked.

I could have that backward, and may have stumbled onto Boatmurdered first.  I have very poor middle-distance memory.

My brother told me about Dwarf Fortress and Boatmurdered; I downloaded 38c soon afterward.

Let's Play archive. Coming off of The Secret of Animal Crossing. Came across the wonderful quote of 'Welcome to Fucking Boatmurdered'.

I mean, who could pass it up after that?

wow, my discovery was from near the back of some gameinformer issue that was like an inch by an inch and surrounded by all this other (then) cooler stuff and I just remember seeing this weird picture that looked like it was supposed to be art but actually a map of a world and I decided to check it out and yeah I've been a faithful fan ever since :)

although I have yet to donate, sorry Toady :(

My brother told me about this extremely complex game that he heard of. "It seems that you can have so much fun with this game, if you take the time to learn it." Well, he didn't have the patience for it, but i do. So, yeah, here i am.

Well, lets see...A friend of mine mentioned it in passing and I didn't pay any real regards to it. Then he mentioned it again and showed me the link to Boatmurdered. I remember laughing myself silly over the escapades of that fort, so I figured I might as well give it a go. Downloaded it, booted it up, got surprised at how long it took for the world to generate (I think it had scrapped some 70 worlds before settling on what would be my first fort) and then promptly picked some spot and embarked...and then I was shafted, because I didn't know the first thing to do...So, I didn't touch it for three days. Then I was pointed in the direction of the "Your first fortress" on the Wiki and I've been playing it ever since. Honestly, the only games that has ever commanded so much of my attention would have to be Planescape: Torment or Morrowind or, possibly, the various city builders by Impressions Games like Zeus: Master of Olympus or Rome...and Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for games where I get to build stuff.

Side-note: Funny thing I've noticed is that other tilesets than the original ones now confuses the buggers out of me. "DF is not meant to look like this!" I keeps telling myself. Anyone else experiencing this?
