Where did you first hear about Dwarf Fortress?
« on: January 20, 2008, 11:11:00 pm »

For me it was Boatmurdered. I'm not a goon or anything but someone pointed out the letsplay site to me and I read every chapter over the course of a few days. Definitely a classic by now.

Everyone else? Did you get it off a review site? Suggested by friends?

I heard about it from the Traditional Games board (/tg/) on 4chan.  We were having a discussion about which video games were "acceptable" in the board (there's already a Video Games board, /v/), and we were discussing accepting roguelikes into the fold.  Dwarf Fortress came up, and I checked it out... and here I am.    :D

Personally, I got it from Jayisgames.com - a site that usually reviews gadgety/cartoon graphics/point and click type games. They'll usually review stuff like Grow or Escape the Room games, and I was rather suprised when they had a violent ASCII game.

Out of curiosity I downloaded it... I have never played a game where 7 hours of trying to figure out controls didn't frustrate me at all. It was addicting for no apparent reason. Games like Corins Mystery Massacre, I look at the game, I look at the manual, mess around for about 20 minutes to no avail, and then I get frustrated and quit. There's just something about DF...

I heard about it on the Armageddon forum. For some reason, I could never really get into that game, but DF kind of stuck.

I read Boatmurdered on the Let's Play archive, and then I thought I'd give the game a try.  This was pre-3d, so I downloaded the last old version which promptly crashed on both my machines.  I thought "Oh well" and moved on with my life.  Later I saw a reference to a new version on some forum or another, and thought I'd give it another try to see if it would run.  Thank god for that.

The epic of Boatmurdered was linked in the Mirth Canal on the Pointlesswasteoftime  forums. After reading that, I knew I must play DF.

PC Gamer UK mag put it on their cover disc, and mentioned it in the "on the disk" section.  What got me interested was the way the dwarves all have their own likes, dislikes, personality, families, dreams, etc.  (The John Defoe quadrilogy  was also on that disk... yep, good month)  I massively respect PCG, so I checked it out, then looked up Bay12 to find out how to play better and lo and behold, there's a new version out with added 3dness!  And since then, it vacuums up my spare time like, um, a really bic vaccuum.

Metafilter. There was a post about the new 3d version, linking to an older post linking to the Boatmurdered saga. After having read it from start to finish, TWICE, I was hooked. I downloaded the game, didn't get what was happening (no cliff? WTF?!?), then read a tutorial, realized I had to dig DOWN... And then, before I knew it, two months had passed in real life time.

I learnt about it on Something Awful, after reading a Let's Play thread.
