Yeah. Materials science.
So why are we getting a different scientist to study materials?
I voted D because I'm worried about his recklessness.  We could bring him in after someone else takes an initial look to determine if the ore is dangerous.

You gotta take risks. Why bother getting a Materials scientist if we aren't going to use him to study materials? Hell, he'd probably even have the same if not less of a chance to blow it up compared to a store brand scientist thanks to his bonus.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Your order Dr. North to put a hold on the vehicle plating and begin immediate work on analyzing this new ore. He's thrilled at the idea, and admittedly shuts himself in the lab with a half dozen assistants and twenty pounds of the unrefined material.

Late August, 2017

Quote
5*,3

There's a few minor explosions and odd flashes of light from the research lab, and one of the lab assistants ends up in the infirmary with some minor burns and an incinerated lab coat, but Bruce North comes through before your triannual report.

He's spinning a coin sized lump of greyish, slightly glittery, material between his fingers, and presents it to you with a nearly childish glee, referring to it alternately as "Northium" or "Brucinite". To hear him tell it, Brucinite is the first step in truly understanding one of the most fundamental parts of the Stargate program, the Stargate itself. To date, the alloy composing the Stargate's structure has never been fully understood, and all attempts to gather significant samples have failed. Dr. North, however, is confident that this new material is one of the elements comprising the Stargate alloy, and its properties are fascinating.

In its ore form, the chaotically aligned Brucinite crystals are highly reactive. The lattice collapses when stimulated by sufficient kinetic or electric energy, creating a tiny shockwave of energy. If a big enough initial pulse is applied, the secondary action can chain react and vastly amplify a blast. Powdered Brucinite, freed of its matrix stone and mixed with RDX, would increase the explosive yield approximately seven fold. That, however, is not the most fascinating part. While it can't be electrically smelted due to its reactivity (as his burned lab assistant will attest) it can be refined in a crucible if sufficient temperatures are applied. The process is difficult and slow, but the resulting material is a room temperature superconductor, and Dr. North believes that, with the proper gel matrix, it might herald a revolution in hyper-capacitors.

The ore itself, in its unrefined state, is of minimal hazard. To get it to chain react you'd need an explosive or thermal impulse on par with a small nuclear warhead.

A- Perfect! Let's sink some money in and start expanding our mining operations as soon as possible!
B- Continue mining from the single test rig, but don't expand until after your report at the end of this month.

Also, do you want to try and change the name of this wonderful new material?

Naming a new ore after himself, how arrogant.

It clearly should be Longwynndium.

(this is a joke post dont do this)

A

Perfect opening line for our report.

Hey guys we started industrial scale mining a new room temp super conductor that will change the way all science is understood and also got our troops sacrificed to aztec gods.

I'm wondering, back in that Aztec situation, that if radio contact was in protocol...why wasn't 'intelligence and recon' protocol too. :P

Still wondering why people rushed in x.x
B for safety

I'd suggest Australite because of the notion of Australia and all it may imply. :P

A, because this is going to be a HUGE benefit to that report.

And Brucinite is probably the most australian name I've ever heard :P

Bruce hit me like that too, yeah. :P
But then I had forgotten to try asking Australian people about it.
Like you. :P

Also wait, spreading our production is a benefit to the report rather than making it sure it's safe for better use?

...What is this report everyone is talking about?
Also what is this SpaceGate that is the context ._.

The report I've mentioned is where you meet with the program higher ups, justify your existence, and receive your update on all major resources. It's analogous to the year end update in SPAMKINGDOM, except you also get to own up to all your mistakes and prop up all your successes.

Also what is this SpaceGate that is the context ._.

Stargate. It got (2, 3?) movies, 3 shows (2 of which were really good. First one ran for a decade, second one for half a decade, and the third one was terrible and got a single season), and a shitload of misc. stuff. And Kree. Much kree.

It's one of my favorite go-to scifi shows.
