Anne turns to Smokey, intent on asking the haze a question.
"Say, the entrance to the Gondola doesn't happen to be opened with a key, does it? If it's not barred from inside, a key should do wonders."
Edit: Then the maid turns to Vera.
"Or, perhaps our artist friend could put the guards to sleep with her concoctions... perhaps permanently?"

Cleaning her nails for the umpteenth time of dirt that isn't there, Vera looks up with a bored expression at the question, drained enthusiasm for the project returning as she speaks.

"Doable, possibly, got a particular delivery method in mind? What about something inhaled, knocks them out, temporally if made right, could go permanent if you really want to. Maybe something more gruesome, ingested to make sure we don't get affected, make them sick? Might try to get medical help if they think its serious, would hinder their ability to stop us at least. Thoughts on something that disorientates the drivers? Or makes them suggestible?"

"Are the drivers also in the employ of the depository or would they belong to another business? Should try to find out who they are, same with the guard detail. Might be able to bribe, blackmail or intimidate them to let us in, or even drive it to the slums for us."

"I'm would assume the drivers are also in the employ of the depository, but I doubt that they would be inside the difficult-to-penetrate building all day, like what would they do? Accounting? I doubt it. It's possible that we could reach them while they aren't at work and blackmail/bribe them then. The question is, who are they? We need the right guys after all."

"I'd guess so. All the guards are usually outside with the gondoliers."

"As for the drivers, they are hired and vetted by the depository. Makes it hard to lean on 'em even if we can find them. Not impossible, but it ain't gonna be easy."

"I think, perhaps we may be thinking too far ahead here. We may know a few things such as the route the gondola is taking and how many guards are guarding it, but we don't know for example how secure the gondola itself is. We have all these plans that involve punching holes and pouring oil through slits when it's perfectly possible that the only thing we have to do to gain control of the vehicle is to beat some guards and drivers in a fist fight."

Francis eyes the clock in his room.

"Since we're running short on time, I'll suggest that for this morning,we should obtain some weapons/ropes/manacles/poison/whatever it takes to subdue the guards and dispose of them non-lethally, in the likely scenario that we don't come up with a plan.

"While we still have time though let's discuss the idea of getting some more information about the gondola. There are some people in my cartel that I know who owe me favours. In fact, favours that could earn me an audience with the owner of the depository. Intrigued? Well I'm thinking that perhaps it may be a good idea to use my connections to get myself a job interview and perhaps a job. Maybe as an accountant, perhaps a janitor, possibly even a guard (though probably not the kind that would escort a gondola). If you lack confidence in me, I should probably mention that this is my specialty. My skills are very suited for this kind of work.

"Have I convinced you?"

"That I can do. I think I'll apply for a position as an accountant since that seems like a position that could plausibly be recommended for a job interview. I'd just need to find myself a briefcase, a suit, and then forge a résumé"

With that it is time to hit the streets.

New Dunhaven is a city that talks where the very walls have eyes as rumors spread and the common folk fear the shadowy element that controls their very lives.

After everyone left the hotel, Francis immediately began to work on his accountant disguise. When he was finished, he looked unrecognizable.

His sleek brown hair was now grey, and he wore a fake beard so convincing that it seemed like he grew it himself. He wore a nice suit and carried a bag filled with all sorts of forged documents. One of those was his résumé, a piece of paper filled with nothing but falsehoods. It told stories about how he managed a noble's many expenses, as well as stories about merchants who's fortunes he made. Even the name at the top of the page was a fabrication. Francis Callaghan had now become Samuel Goldman, a 50 year old fossil who had worked in the industry for 30 years. He's only recently traveled to New Dunhaven, being here for only a few months, but he hopes to bring his international expertise and create a new standard of accounting. He fits in among the merchant and noble districts but he would stick out like a sore thumb anywhere else.

With that out of the way, it was time to go to a job interview with the owner of the Grackenwald Depository. Sure, Francis had to use what limited influence he had among the Vespers to get it, but an interview was an interview. Hopefully, a man like Mr. Goldman would be able to convince the owner to give him a job. An accountant has access to some very private documents after all.

Also, Francis will try to get an idea of how tight the security is around the depository. Can't forget that.

A contact hands the grizzled Mr. Samuel Goldman a letter of recommendation personally signed and sealed by a high ranking member of royalty but whose writing is either too foreign or too sloppy to be able to make out.

Samuel walks through the customer entrance of the Depository as he feels the eyes of multitudes of guards look upon him almost screaming to leave. Yet Samuel Goldman isn't a newcomer and continues his walk to the front desk where his letter is spotted by the Valet.

"Mr. Goldman, we had received word you would be coming. Such a distinguished Career, we are glad to have you aboard. Don't mind the security, we have hired a few extra guards around here and they haven't learned their manners yet."

You banter for a tiny bit before the Valet remembers his manners and invites you up to the boss. The place is a labyrinth and extremely well guarded, you pass by rooms that must be teaming with treasure behind bolted and well protected doors. Every hall, every corner, it all seems designed to make this place impenetrable. You eventually are lead to a warm room with a fireplace and a liquored wooden desk sprawled out on what seems to be carpet, a luxury indeed.

He smiles and treats you with a reserved reception. He gives you a lot of layman description of your job, you do not have much to do right now but he does want you to come and get acquainted before you do more serious work. "I'll temporarily put you under Phineas Copperleaf, he oversees the transfer of taxes between the depository and the crown. I hope you work well together" he coughs and then "I wouldn't do anything too suspicious if I were you, We are transferring some important taxes in a few days and people are on guard. We might own this business, but the customers are always right as we say in the business, but you already know that"

The Boss, who you swear you still haven't heard the name of gives you quick rundown once more and lets you get on your way. "Get a full night's rest. I'll let Mr. Copperleaf to take it easy on you until you until the end of the week."

"Thank you sir, I'm honored"

Samuel Goldman then leaves as he was instructed. Confidently walking past all of the guards and successfully hiding his fear.

"Shit"

Francis had got more than he bargained for. On the one hand, he was placed into the department directly responsible for managing the taxes. On the other hand, he's going to be supervised by this Copperleaf fellow. He was hoping for some privacy. Well, he has an entire night to think about this so he should probably go inform the others about what he saw (it can be safely assumed that everyone now knows what Francis knows).

Billy swore under his breath. This job was definitely going to suck. All the plans so far involved poisons and chemicals and subterfuge, things that Billy didn't know shit about. At best, he would be "Plan B", and at worst, he'd wind up sitting on the sidelines and watching everyone else pull this thing off.

Might as well make himself useful. The group would need to know exactly where the best place to hit the gondola would be, and the easiest way to do that would be to just go look.

Billy took a look at his clothes, and realized that his gaudy attire would make him look wretchedly out of place in the docks. He made sure to whip himself up a disguise so that he'd blend in with the crowds, and then headed to the docks. An easy job, just to get a general idea of the route it'd be taking. Most importantly, how many stops it'd have to make, and the visibility of those areas.

He left his weapons and mask at home.

Unfortunately even though you quickly changed your clothes without too much time and consideration into putting it together you end up looking a tad Nuevo Riche, with it being so close to a exchange it makes people start talking about a strange individual on the dock (Heat Generated: +2, Total 6)

Rolling "Case the Joint": 68, Success

You travel along the canal route that the Gondola must take keeping a firm eye out for areas that might be excellent areas to attack or ambush the Gondola. While a few areas are passable there are two in particular that meet your eye:

The Broadwater Bridge: An exceptionally large bridge that the Armored Gondola must pass under, it is located in the Docks. It may even be one of the largest bridges in New Dunhaven.

The second location you have less time for, but you still catch a glimpse.

The Canyon: A  long winding stretch of the city's canals that has no streets on either side of it, only tall buildings with sporadic alleys between them. It is located in the Commoner's District.

That is all the loitering you can muster without drawing too much attention to yourself and getting questioned by guards especially with so much ground to cover. Yet you have managed to get a significant amount done and have found two particularly good places to stage.

Vera thought, as some of the plans seemed to call for, or could benefit from one, that she ought to find an alchemist. Finding one would be a simple enough affair, though the real trouble could be trying to convince them it would be worth their while to stay available for 3 days to make an at the time unspecified device.

Negotiation was hardly her forte, so those in the crew with that sort of skill set and were welcome in the commoner district were invited to accompany her.

Not wanting to spend what limited funds or pull she has within her cartel on something they might not need, she would be attempting to sell them on the potential for future cooperation, favors, and reluctantly if that didn't work, a portion of her own cut once the job was done.

Smokey decides to accompany Vera- he is much more adept at wheeling and dealing than his new comrade, his assistance will certainly be welcome. Aside from that, he is we welcome in the commoner district, it won't bring too much more attention to their job while significantly increasing its chance of success.
