I normally build staircases just outside the walls, then once my dwarfs can reach the upper level, I build floors there to fill in the open area within the walls.

I've seen other players suggesting bridges instead of floors, though.

edit to add: is it the staircases you're having trouble with? Make sure you've built enough staircases so your dwarfs can reach the level you want to build on. If your walls are one level high, you'll need to build two levels of staircase (that is, an "up stair" on ground level, and a "down stair" on the level above).

Another variant is to make a ramp instead of a wall out of one tile of the top level. When you've built your floor you then deconstruct the ramp and replace it with a wall.

I build an up staircase INside the wall, build a down staircase on top of the up staircase, so that builderdorfs can then climb up the staircase and stand on the wall. Then I build a "floor" to connect the walls (type b-C-f), which is technically a roof for the layer below.

A few people have experimented with dugout houses. These lead to houses that the dwarfs will clean the inside of, as those houses you roof later are still considered "outside" by the program that decides if something needs cleaning.

I seem to be stuck in a head loop where all of my fortresses are just replays of the same old megaproject.

Basically, a huge glass dome over a pit (down to the magma sea) with four ramps leading in from the cardinal directions that are roofed over similar to the Acropolis of Athens; halls with gabled roofs sitting on rows of smoothed/engraved pillars.

For access to roof these I construct a 3x3 stairwell from a span across the middle of the pit up to the maximum height of the dome, then build series of bridges fro this outwards to the N, S, E & W anchoring to the wall/pillars.

It'd be easier to build a short stair just outside each of the four halls. but this way I can still lock down the fort and have access to the roofs, whereas the other way gives the goblinites easy access to shooting galleries.  (Just like shooting dorfs in a barrel!  :o)

My gabled roofs are basically rows of wall/ramp pairs - I like the look in a visualiser like stonesense - and once the lowest level is built the dorfs can simply walk up the roof ramp to build the next level.

It does take some micromanagement when the dorfs start on the next level of designations (note to Urist: why do you insist on building a wall supported by nothing but thin air when if you move over one step it'll be fully connected to the rest of the fort?  Hmm?) but compared to other projects it's pretty much set'n'forget.

Make sure you roof the walls themselves.

I havent played in about a year plus, but there used to be a thing where fliers can move diagonally and across zlevels in one move, negating your defenses.

Hey, speaking of negations.  Are hatches still invulnerable from below to bashers?  Are wooden doors still immune to bashers if they are not exactly 2-3 tiles away?  Forcing a FB to get adjacent to a door to 'freeze' it into place used to be a viable strategy.

I've seen nothing to indicate the issue with a destroyable buildings incredible attraction prevents a destroyer from moving out to destruction distance (exactly 2 tiles in a cardinal direction in my experience) has been fixed. Similarly, nothing has changed regarding hatches. There is, however, an issue with buildings being destroyed from out of position if there is a reachable legal location (a building destroyer version of dorfs being able to build e.g. walls from a diagonal position, but only provided they could have stood in a cardinal one). I don't think that applies to hatches from below, though.

I've heard of the need to build floors on top of walls, but have never done it and never suffered from it, but may just have been lucky, and there has been no report of the correction of such a thing, so if it's real it still is a threat (but I don't understand it: I understand a diagonal downwards movement from a built fortification or a raised drawbridge, because it lacks a walkable roof, but walls contain roofs). I have multiple experiences with diagonal access upwards from a cavern or the magma sea into an up/down staircase, though.

In adventure mode I had built a couple of walls that had tree leaves above them. I could see the leaves from inside and I could climb onto the wall, passed the roof, from the inside. All I had to do was cut down the tree, then floors appeared on top of the walls automatically and I could no longer see or climb between the roof and wall.

Usually I ensure all roofs are permanently accessible from the building's outside (so dodgers can climb down and looters can remove that buzzard corpse). Ramps or stairs...

If it is a tall tower (maybe you decided to enclose a fruit tree inside a tower) and you don't want stairs going all the way up the outside, leave a hole in the top wall, build a staircase jutting outside of the tower, use that to build your roof, then seal the wall, leaving the stairs in case you need to deconstruct the wall to get some dead thing off the roof.
