Alright, sure, let's see if something a bit more useful can be built. Frankly, if we want to cut down on their naval advantage, we should just build a DDE. If we want sonar, well, sonar doesn't really give us anything right now. If we want a missile, why don't we wait until we at least TRY to steal their tech?

But for now I'll vote for the acoustic mine, because it might actually be useful.

Lets see if we can get some traction on this before Sensei gets bored of waiting.

Eh, why not. Clearly mine's are hard/impossible to counter.

I doubt it will provide any benefit to researching sonar later, but oh well.

You could just do a revision of the existing old destroyer to make some of them into minesweepers.  They'd serve fine against light craft, too.

What is to stop the wild ride missiles from being shot down? It sends like it would be rather easy to do so...

How the hell is that *easy* to do?  Kamikaze strikes with the Zero were a pain in the ass to shoot down, and even the earliest of Anti-Ship missiles were nearly twice as fast.

You guys do realize that if we do a mine now, Canalla will make their own Sonar, and we wouldn't be able to create a submarine next time we can land on their mainland to wreck absolute havok?  Sure, it might deal some damage, but not the same degree.

I have to agree that if we want a mine right now, it should be the Charybdis.

Well it's been long enough, I'm closing the vote on the Whalesong, whatever that is. Also as a matter of record, since this was debated earlier, it's not inconceivable that a sonar device could help detect things like mines.

Whalesong Acoustic Mine The Echo is a heavy, tethered mine. With a warhead significantly larger than our current torpedoes, it is capable of destroying all but the largest ships outright. It's acoustic sensor listens to the sound of nearby ships, and is both configurable for broad ranges of the spectrum (blowing up everything) or clearly defined frequencies (blowing up only certain classes of vessels). It includes a build-in configurable delay counter to allow a few ships to pass over unharmed. Though rather heavy, the Echo can be deployed by a modified Salamander parachute from the Reckless effect or Ice Giant in addition to various forms of naval deployment.

You're right, it's not inconceivable.

BUT, it would be less useful for us because their floating mines SHOULD BE almost useless, since they're even worse than their torpedoes (right on the surface isn't a good place for a sea mine, it loses about half its power into the air and the rest into the thickest part of the ship's belt armor and the top of the torpedo belt). And, of course, it's right on the surface. Sonar isn't going to pick them up much, if at all.

And it wouldn't be perfect (mines are small and, like most detection systems, sonar has noise in which you might lose small mines), regardless of size and depth.

Oh, and we rolled a three, so THANK GOODNESS we didn't do something even as complicated as sonar.

"I worry about "Destroyed outright" there. I kind of feel that "destroyed outright" implies that it immediately ceases to be ship-shaped. It is sort of difficult to put a crater in a moderately-sized armoured vessel. Is this thing going to be five to ten metres in diameter?
