Bit of both. It was never actually admitted that we had succeeded, but they deduced it from us "defending" the reverse-engineering system and also from somebody (can't recall exactly...but I think it was Quake) admitting that we had attempted it without giving the time we had attempted.

They put 2 and 2 together and got 5, but we had lied about the question in the first place, so their answer was right anyway.
That's totally not too much stretch to put on that metaphor, is it? :P

Don't bother trying to hide the missile, they already figured out we have it based on the Discord.

Remember when I said "no hints" and you guys were like "nah let's do hints they won't change anything anyways" and I was like ":\"?

Yeah.

they deduced it from us "defending" the reverse-engineering system
How does that even happen? From where does a conversation about an until-now obscure rule even start? Did someone from their team lead into it because they had been reading our thread? Did someone from ours decide that this whole "playing fair is more fun for everyone!" thing was silly and decide to pull a Riddler? I am genuinely curious! Meh, I'll just assume that someone just really likes telling secrets, probably to the point that it is well short of a nervous compulsion, but pretty much acts the same if they don't notice it. I can't imagine it was vote-rigging, the vote to use it was already winning by a large margin.

This is not why I hate discord in these things, but it isn't helping any...

P.S.
As for the desalination rule: I am genuinely more mystified than upset. It is annoying that the option was destroyed, but it is a petty thing. The dynamics of how this happened as a curiosity is much greater.

Yeah, it was deduced by the other team, but they were helped to that conclusion a lot by a couple different people. Nobody outright said it except for Quake, who admitted to us having attempted it (he was referring to earlier times, but they assumed we had tried this turn)

The only way for a team to keep a secret is if all but one are dead.

And even then the remaining idiot will probably blab or """"hint"""".

So we're blaming this on Quake?
[rage mode]Quake was always the useless middle-child of the genre. Doom had already codified everything. The monster rooms, the loot, the boss-prep, the traps... It was all done before, and with much less overhead to bog everything down. It completely failed to convey a setting, as evidenced by the revolutionary perception of Deus Ex or even Half Life. As far as atmosphere it failed to anythign that made even the slightest effort. Call of Duty and Halo would come out with their grand set-pieces of warfare, but there were plenty of horror-genre things long before that which really played up the immersion is ways that Quake could never hope to. Really, it's whole existence can be summed up as "too little, too late"...[/rage mode]

Battle Report 22: Autumn 1943

New Equipment:

This turn, the Forenians have designed the Salamander Pattern F, a variation on the amphibious Salamander APC which mounts an electric pump-powered flamethrower, which is effective to considerable range (for a flamethrower) and burns trargets with Napalm, a thickened, sticky fuel. This also includes the design of a special slat armor which can be used on top of ERA, and is intended to counter tandem charges and has been retrofitted to all Salamander variants. For their revision, they've managed to reverse-engineer the Hellfire Missile, the Piracy Warning is their name for it. The missile is fully functional, but the guidance system is copied by rote and not really well understood.

Cannala has designed the R1M1943 NJEC 'Viking' RADAR, which is an elaborate new radar system based around a Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier, which generates frequencies in the gigahertz range. It receives signals to an antenna array which is shrouded under a plastic dome. It can be placed in the nose of an airplane, or on a rotary mount for ships and trucks, and report the distance and altitude of radar contacts. It also has a scanning configuration and can (poorly) follow a target in the air. Output is a green circular CRT display, whose exact contents depend on the operating mode of the radar. For their revision they've implemented the ES-TCHEAT Ordnance Revamp, which focuses primarily on replacing many instances where radar proximity fuzes are used with much more simplistic electrostatic fuzes. These are somewhat subject to atmospheric conditions but immune to radar jamming. The second part of this ordinance revamp is the implementation of twin-charge HEAT rounds for cannons, particularly the Daybreaker cannon mounted on the Bull and other vehicles.

The Forenian Army currently has the following equipment, not including legacy equipment which can be found near the OP:

The War This Turn:
This season, Cannala is attacking both jungles again, trying to maintain their momentum from the previous season. Forenia is trying to regain their lost ground on both of those same fronts.

The Battle at Sea
While there are no new actual naval designs this season, the times are quickly changing in the air over the sea.

Forenia has started deploying imitation Hellfire missiles, in theory bringing them to an arms parity with Cannala. In practice they're not extremely beneficial: Forenia already has good weapons for air targets (cannons) and sea targets (torpedoes and bombs). In theory they would be useful for engaging Vengeful Charlotte bombers from a greater range, but the Lightning Streak fighters capable of intercepting Cannala's fast bomber aircraft do not have wing mounts capable of carrying missiles. Additionally, in combat testing it's clear that whatever IR-reactive compound the Forenian engineers scrounged up for the sensors is inferior to the original Cannalan one, the Piracy Warning missiles have a noticeably reduced lock range compared to genuine Hellfires.

Cannala's updated armaments are more substantial. Their new electrostatic fuzes mean that Hellfire missiles, which they rely on heavily to engage priority targets (bombers and transports) from a standoff distance, are back on the menu. Just as they were before the Fair Fight Module was introduced, they're fairly effective, and furthermore this affects proximity-detonated AA cannon rounds from ships as well. They're not perfect, a cloud can sometimes set them off and the actual detonation distance can be slightly unpredictable based on atmospheric conditions, but they get the job done. However, what's also extremely effective is the Viking radar. Fitting into the nose of a Spearhead-C or into a Vengeful Charlotte, these provide a considerable benefit both for detection of enemy aircraft and ships, since an aircraft can quickly carry radar higher and farther than a ship (although ships benefit somewhat from the new radar as well, particularly in that it takes up less space). Making good use of early radar information available directly to aircraft squadrons (who might encounter an enemy air patrol from outside the radar range of any ship) can provide Cannalan air squadrons with the ability to enter combat at the time, position and heading of their choosing- an advantage valuable enough they outright win fights sometimes, despite Forenia's somewhat better fighters and generally better piloting.

Cannala has an advantage at sea.

The Battle for the Tereshkova Jungle
Attacking: Both
The dry season continues.

At the onset of battle, Cannala makes an attempt to resume their previously successful tactics of creating air-exclusion zones near the coasts with cover from seaborne anti-air guns. However, their attempts to do this are stifled considerable by Forenia's liberal and sometimes haphazard deployment of acoustically detonated naval mines. To put it simply, it takes the Cannalans far more time to remove mines than it takes Forenians to lay them down, so despite Cannala's naval advantage their ability to bombard the air and sea near the coast is mediocre. While Cannala's traditional support advantage is reduced, Forenia is suffering as well. Cannalan radar systems and missiles have thrown a huge wrench into Forenia's airborne logistics and somewhat reduced their capacity for close air support. Forenia still has some great tricks up their sleeve, in particular the Firecracker bombs' dual HEAT and incendiary variants are both effective, Cannala is taking up a little of the slack with their Vengeful Charlotte bombers, which now can use their onboard radar even better evade interception. Forenia demonstrates that their Piracy Warning missiles are capable of locking onto and hitting a Bull tank on the ground, when foliage permits, but this isn't extremely often and the Bull isn't a common tank in this environment anyway. The battle here will be largely decided by units fighting on the ground, but with Forenia's air supply lines threatened and a disadvantage at sea, Cannala will have the advantage in numbers.

For that purpose, Forenia has their new Salamander F. First it's important to address that all Salamander variants, including the most common one with a Velociraptor autocannon, benefit from additional slat armor. This armor is partially effective, it has a good chance of stopping a tandem-charge rocket fired by infantry (or the RPG mount on a Raider). This depends on the angle of impact, with a square hit sometimes scoring a kill on the first shot. Also, while the slat armor does remain in place after the Blood Eagle ERA underneath detonates, it's not a considerable benefit when the ERA is already gone, and a single hit including from autocannons will typically strip all the ERA off of one side of the vehicle. Still, it's slightly more survivable than its Raider counterpart. Against tandem charge rounds fired from a Daybreaker cannon, which Cannalans mount on both the Marauder and the Bull, it's not a very effective defense and the armor will usually be breached on a hit. Since Marauder APC's aren't more expensive than Raiders (the original version of Cannala's amphibious APC, with an autocannon) Cannala begins primarily deploying these. The final result is that fighting between APCs on both sides is fast and lethal, but Forenia's APCs gain some survivability Cannala's remarkably effective MURD-ER rocket launchers, so they can often return fire in an ambush. The Raider performs similarly against Forenian infantry, with its less advanced armor and their less advanced RPG's.

Slat armor aside, the Salamander F mounts a very powerful flamethrower. This can be quite effective, but it's not a war winner on its own. The range of its flamethrower is considerable, and it spreads destruction and smoke over a wide area very quickly. When it comes within range it can quickly render emplacements untenable and force a rout. However even though its range is much greater than a man-portable flamethrower, it's still less than that of a Cannalan RPG, and it makes a big target. It requires close support of other units, moreso than a normal armored vehicle. The tactical advantage is somewhat circumstantial, but it has a considerable effect on the morale of infantry nearby, Cannalans don't like to be anywhere near the threat of being set on fire and Forenians are emboldened by the roaring flames, as well as taking advantage of the opportunity to attack enemy infantry while they reposition.

Some other traditional advantages remain unchanged. Forenia still benefits from their light and mobile Sarukh artillery, though both sides' artillery is relatively immobile in that it lacks the ability to be moved through water by their amphibious APC's. Forenia's Tiger Armor soldiers, despite being almost comically anachronistic, are still effective in that they typically require fire from an autocannon or a near hit with explosives to kill. Cannala continues to make very good use of their night vision technology which can be mounted on rifles, vehicles and even rocket launchers. The jungle undergrowth limits the effective range of spotlights at night, making these night vision attacks most effective here, but the availability of the Aswang II modules still limits this to commando raids rather than general use.

With their traditional air advantage at its weakest point ever, Forenia is forced to cede ground.

Cannala gains ground! [Cannala 4/4, Forenia 0/4] If Cannala attacks on this lane next turn, the attack will take place in the desert.

The Battle for the Forenian Jungle
Attacking: Both

"Are you sure this is going to work?" Sergeant Gutierrez looked down at Private Jose from the top of his stepladder. He had just placed the last nail in a sign to the top of a small structure resembling a lemonade stand. It had writing on it, in Russian and Arabic, which he has been lead to believe said Cannala Refugee Asylum Center, although he couldn't read it himself. "Not really. But if we're doing this we're not on the front lines. You dig?" He stepped down from his ladder. Around him was a clearing, and a small camp where his squad had some beans over a fire, as well as a Raider squad parked nearby. He had successfully argued that the recruitment post should be away from a main camp in case it should attract Forenian spies, and so there was nobody around to see that he was not doing much work in particular. From near the fire, Intelligence Officer Ramirez looked up from his radio, where some Forenian voice was babbling complete gibberish (as far as the rest of the squad cared). "No no, I really think this will work. There's a bunch of Forenians who know they made a mistake throwing in with the damn Nazis. They hear what's going down in Europe, same as we do, and they want to get out before shit goes south." Gutierrez looked a little confused at this. "Didn't they put everybody who wasn't a Nazi in prison camps already? That's what the Turbados Today said." "Nah, I've been listening to these Forenian radio shows. I think their Jewish people are... pretending to be astronomers, or something? I probably misunderstood that. My Russian isn't great. Anyway there's a lot of people who are scared of what the Nazis want to do and even some ministers who want to kick them out entirely." While Ramirez paused to grab a helping of beans, Gutierrez squinted at him. "That's bullshit. Next you'll be telling me you believe that foreign propaganda about our rum all being watered down." "Sarge... I don't know how to tell you this. Why don't you grab some beans and sit down first."

The fighting here resembles that of Tereshkova Jungle, except that Forenia's supply lines are not so crippled because there is a direct land path from the capitol. On the ground, Forenia's flamethrowers burn through swathes of jungle, creating open spaces. There are occasions when Bull and Bjorn tanks meet in direct combat, Cannala's tandem charge HEAT shells prove fairly effective here consistently penetrating on side hits and often penetrating on front or turret hits, although infantry rocket launchers aren't very effective. Up in the air, radar-equipped Charlotte bombers are a serious thorn in Forenia's side, since they have the ability to detect Forenian aircraft from a considerable distance and choose an optimal path to avoid interception.

Alotgether, it's a very close thing. Forenia's air power is weak, but Cannala is unable to rely on naval bombardment as they grow further from the shore and they don't have as advanced close air support, relying mainly on larger bombers.

The fighting here comes down to a single crucial battle. The West Forenia Airbase is a critical staging area for munitions, fuel, and aircraft. It is defended by three Overcompensator guns, a kilometer east of the base itself, which can easily target any group large of Cannalans large enough the threaten the perimeter defenses. Ultimately, the guns were destroyed in a daring and costly air raid in which three Charlotte bombers targeted the bunkers with 2000lb Anchor Penetrating Bombs.

Cannala pushes deeper into Forenia than ever before. [Cannala 2/2, Forenia 0/2] The next combat in this lane will take place in the Mountains, if Cannala presses the attack. If for some reason Forenia attacks and Cannala doesn't, the fighting will take place in the jungle.

Events outside the War:

The Outside World:

Radio Berlin announces that the Wehrmacht has discovered mass graves of poles killed by Russians. Those terrible Russians, unlike Germany, who didn't massacre any poles. Less than a week later, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising occurs when Nazi soldiers round up the remaining Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. In retaliation the German army burned the ghetto block by block, killing at least 13,000. Aberdeen, Scotland is bombed by the Luftwaffe as well. The German Afrika Korps, as well as Italian troops in North Africa, surrender to Allied forces, ending Axis involvement in North Africa. Comintern is formally dissolved in Moscow, some suspect as a move by Stalin to placate his western allies by visibly reducing his influence on other countries. Civilian aircraft British Overseas Airways Flight 777 is shot down by German aircraft, who may have believed Winston Churchill to be on board, killing 17 civilians. In the United States, the Zoot Suit riot and Detroit Race Riot occur.

Local Events:
The Forenian Independence Party would like to remind citizens to beware of foreign influences. Recently as Cannalan forces advance on the western front, purported "Recruitment posts" have been erected to grant "Asylum" to Forenians. These traitorous dogs are not to be trusted- they will burn and loot our homes if they are given the opportunity, and kill civilians wantonly, as they have already done to denizens of the westmarsh who failed to evacuate. Anyone trusting themselves to the care of the Cannalans will surely meet a similar fate. The "Allies" in general are not to be trusted when they claim they are merciful, as was so cruelly demonstrated recently when hundreds of bodies were found in mass graves in Poland, where Russian soldiers had slaughtered them. Keep Forenia Forenian, do not trust the Cannalans.

In Cannala, for the first time in recent memory, the House of Brothers has reached the two-thirds majority required to overturn an edict of El Presidente's. Historically, the parliament-like branch of Cannalan government has only served as a rubber stamp for El Presidente's will. A plan for a large scale Juraki language-learning program for Cannalan police has been overturned, with Brothers citing that the cost of the program is considerable and takes away from other civil projects, as well as that Juraki citizens don't matter anyway. After this landmark event, a flurry of bills has been passed- first a punitive "un-patriotic tax" on Sake, the Juraki liquor of choice, then a reassignment of training resources from the air force to the navy ("the TRUE branch of the Cannalan armed forces"), and finally an informal resolution called the "Ask Forgiveness Act", stating that American trade laws should only be respected if Cannalans have been demonstrably punished for violating them at least once. Many of these policies are controversial among Cannala's elite, but popular among local district voters. There was also a lot of popular support for a bill to create an organization dedicated entirely to rooting out corruption in the government, which failed to pass with 8% of Brothers voting in favor.

Plane mounted radar followed by radar-guided missiles?
Ship-killing missiles followed by something to enhance the air?
What can we do to improve mountain fighting? A sniper rifle and a man-portable flame-thrower to address that the terrain dictates the range and rarely chooses "medium"?
