Do the rockets have enough bang to make proximity fuses worthwhile? Or do we plan to make flak rockets?

They should.  We're using them as artillery right now, so they should have a pretty brutal blast radius.

Hey, you guys know what's cool?

Sidewinder Missiles were made in the 1950's.

They also didn't work.  Like really, really didn't work.

they don't really need to work that well, if the Yarrs believe we made the beginnings of homing rockets they're going to invest at least a entire turn into defending against it. and in the mean time we could still use the rocket against ships and armor even if only in a dumbfire way.

We have magnetic detenators, working radar, and plenty, plenty, plenty of rocket experience.  I'm not saying we build a sidewinder as our next design, I'm just saying we could easily put a detenator-sensor in the nose of a rocket and use it as an air-burst rocket - all in a single revision.

Radar guided?  Seriously?  I thought your radar was building-sized, and likely as inaccurate as period radars.. sufficient to detect large numbers of aircraft, and altitude estimation was dependant on the user.

Yeah, missiles are a little bit out of our league given our bad RADAR systems. Sure we've got the rocket part down well, but we need to work on our electronics if we want those things guided.

We'd likely use infared, at first.  I pointed out radar because we have experience with locating targets in 3D based on radar - an analogous tech.

And why you you keep saying "your radar"? It's "OUR" radar, teammate :P

Edit: actually, if we tried to do it in a revision it'd likely just be a magnetic detenator installed on a rocket mounted on a plane.  Simple, existing tech used together in an easy way to get us experience in that field.

Oh, Devastators not on our team? Why are you posting here, then?  Unless you're spying...?

Just a creepy not-lurker. Clearly a lesser species than a true lurker, and prone to syaing things that it ought not to, but still not a true threat...

I think that the idea of sidewinders is terrible. We are not going to get near the tech to make antiair missiles. That said, something closer to a V-2? With all that extra space for equipment? And the fuel and leverage for turning? Against slower targets like cruisers and factories? I fancy that a 3-tonne guided missile could be an improvement over carpet-bombing... But I would prefer a radar-guided missile that can only seek active radar installations. I mean, sure, they can confuse it by turning off their radars, but it is a massive pain to do that sort of thing and it will royally mess them up if we repeatedly attack with the things and occasionalyl use it to mess with their radars as our aircraft approach and depart. And if they don't constantly shut off their radars, then they get to see what hapens when a three-tonne rocket shows up for a play-date...

I would debate that we could get near the tech to make sidewinders, but I acknowledge that it will be a while before we can make good ones.

That being said, I think it'd be a solid idea to develop tech with an eye on that as an end goal; make our radar non-complex and smaller, do some simpler guided missiles like glide-bombs or V-2's, etc.
