No, I think we should do radio rather than radar if we're doing a rad-- revision, because every advantage we can get on the ground is crucial right now, and we JUST lost our communications advantage.

Or we could just do what Cannala did and make a single back-pack radio.

Although honestly, I think longer-ranged radar (with a side attempt to decrease size) would be a better use of our revision.

Idea, what if we built a passive system to detect radar pings? All it has to do is beep when it hears a pulse, so it should be an easy design. We might even cram it into a plane, and only make it look forwards so they can home in on enemy ships, or even ground bases a night to some degree. Of course, they could turn off their radar too...

Hmm, could we make it so it goes "Ping" when it detects radar in any direction, and goes "Boop" when it detects the radar frontwards?

I'm not totally sure that being behind in communications is the end of the world? I mean, it's not like they developed codebreakers and signal jammers, our communications still work, and remain secret. They have the advantage of being able to carry them in a backpack, but that isn't a massive advantage, merely a large one.

I still like the idea of doing some simple QoL things for our revision, to improve all our forces, but especially the infantry.

...we could always give ERA another try...

Hell, NERA would make our stuff invulnerable to everything except their HEAT rounds and rpg's.

Our communications advantage has been consistently described as a factor in our favor, even where listening in on yarrs HASN'T been involved, with stuff such as coordination being a noted upside. Cannala getting better radio this turn was also described as one of the factors getting them jungle ground. However, smaller radio would give us a fantastic advantage on one front: our paratroopers. All of the asskicking our paratroopers have been doing has, for the largest part, been WITHOUT radio. If we get those paratroopers coordination ability behind enemy lines...? Whew.

Infantry QoL doesn't really provide us with a critical enough advantage to burn a revision on it while we're behind.

Eh...powder is right.  We should get paratrooper capable radios.

Quote
Revision: UF-R4-39 'Tigers Roar'
The Radio has been consolidated down to a single easy-to-carry backpack.  By default the radio can communicate unencrypted, but encrypted comms channels requires the operator to input a password between four and ten digits long.  The only significant change besides the reduced side is converting the encryption from text to voice.  The encryption used Paired-Bases for passwords; the password is used as a base to scramble the output of the radio, and the same password is used to decipher the output message.  This allows the encryption code to be changed quickly and easily.  The radio is also attuned to FM frequencies rather than AM, to gain better range and quality.

The main priority is scaling down to back-pack size, followed by FM radio, followed by the voice encryption.

Considering how much time we've sunk into the RADAR, these shouldn't be especially difficult changes, I don't think...my reasoning is that decreasing the size should be trivial or easy, so we should attempt to improve our comms encryption ability as well.  We have plenty of experience with radiowaves and electronics at this point, and this tech already exists.

This is mostly so you all know, I'm not dead quite yet. Also I agree with the Radio revison idea, easy communication is vastly more important then being able to find the enemy. Especially since we need to be able to easily communicate where the bleeps on our radar are.

UF-39-APC "Salamander" Pattern B
Based on a new frame, inspired by the Raider, this eight-wheeled all terrain vehicle is designed to carry a squad of infantry, plus support gear (tiger armour & squad weapons for example). The first and last wheels are for power and steering. It is fitted with a turreted AC18, plus coaxial Sorraia. The armour is Medium all round. The vehicle has a hexagonal cross-section, which means the side armour is all sloping. Front armour is similarly constructed. Additionally, it uses one unit of Manganese alloy to improve armour further. It has a rear access ramp, as well as two side doors, all rubber sealed. It is designed to achieve 64km/h on smooth ground, 32km/h on rough, and has a pair of screw propellers to allow  slow  movement across water. It can thus fjord small waterways and swamps and float across larger ones.

UF-39-APC "Salamander" Pattern B:
The Salamander is a large amphibious APC, with a wide body to keep itself stable on the water. It is covered in medium armor, and the body is in a "hexagonal cross-section" shape, which means that any point on its sides or front is either sloping up or down, with the front being long and narrow while the sides are flatter. It has 8 large wheels, the front and rear axles both drive and steer, while the middle two axles are dummies. Water propulsion is from two small propellers. This was a necessary compromise to keep transmission weight down, but land performance isn't amazing. It holds about fourteen soldiers, or a few less if they're bringing heavy weapons and Tiger Armor. Soldiers exit double file through a watertight rear door/ramp and there's a top front crew hatch. It is armed with an AS-AC18 turret and coaxial Sorraia. [5 Ore 3 Oil]
