At least now I have something to riot about.  Moderate rioting of course.

So, some kind of lander maybe?  Or a tank or ship or something that the battle report actually indicates we need?

Next turn, unless something happenes, we make a tank and a lander, if something happens though, plans could change.

Battle Report 6: Autumn 1939

The Map:
I've updated the map with new island names. Now 40% less confusing!

New Equipment:

This turn, the Forenians improved upon their existing radar, creating the RDN-39-2 DEADLIER RAY, it can detect the range and direction of aircraft using a single rotating array of antennae, but the facility which supports it is either a large building, or an entire AS-CV-22 cargo ship dedicated to carrying a radar array. It has good range, but only detects aircraft. For their revision, they began development of Project Blood Eagle, the exact nature of which is a secret.

Cannala's multi-turn work on radar has culminated into the Eagle Eye RADAR, which is oddly enough better than the Forenian one. It has similar capabilities, but is smaller, taking up a single turret on a combat ship, and being available in a semi-portable form, which consists of four trucks and takes a few hours to set up, but still, it's something that can be used in the field. Their revision is the M1939 A-4B Falcon, a revision of the original Falcon the chief benefit of which is being less oil intensive, with a re-tuned engine and cooling system. This makes it Cheap, a significant benefit. Additionally, it incorporates some small amounts of Titanium into the design, the main benefit of which is that Cannala has got a start on their Titanium production.

The Forenian Army currently has the following equipment:

The War This Turn:
Cannala has chosen to attack in the North and South, and they have chosen to spend their expense credit on the Seaweed Anti-Air Cruiser, maximizing the effectiveness of their new radar. Forenia has chosen to attack the north where they stand to gain resources and the middle to push the Cannalans back.

Espionage!
Almost nobody is spying.

The Battle at Sea
This year, both nations have developed navally-mobile radar stations. These radars are only capable of detecting flying objects. Cannala has also revised their Falcon into something which is slightly better but, more importantly, cheaper.

On the whole, both of these favor Cannala. The ability to detect aircraft is more valuable for Cannala, as Forenia relies on aircraft for offense and Cannala does not. The increase in available aircraft is undeniably a boon, and the Falcon A4-B is the most advanced fighter in the Cannala-Forenia war (or the Forenia-Cannala war, depending who you ask), plus being able to carry a few bombs, but Forenian piloting skills make up for their Stinger's comparative lack of features. Notably, both sides lack a more expensive fighter to take full advantage of their resources. There's also the fact that Forenia scouts and attacks with aircraft, but now doing so makes them visible on radar, giving Cannala hints (or, occasionally, dead giveaways) as to where their carriers lie, before the fighting starts.

On the Cannalan side, usually a Kalmar in a naval group is designated intelligence ship, and one of its turrets is removed for the radio apparatus. The Forenians have a modified CV-22 for their intelligence ship, which has very meager defenses of its own.

There are some caveats though. First off, the Cannalans' radios are still expensive. Unlike Forenian airborne squads, which are in constant communication, a squad of Cannalan aircraft has to rely on their squad leader for all radio communication, and the rest of the squad communicates with their squad lead by hand signals. This somewhat limits the ability of Cannalan air groups to receive intelligence from radar stations (or radar ships in this case. Second, long-range aircraft communication (such as that of a ship directing aircraft which have left from on-shore that they need to change direction) by the Cannalans is un-encrypted, and the Forenians listen in. Forenians can send encrypted messages to bombers, airfields on land, and of course between intelligence ships and carriers, which can (compared to the Cannalans) rapidly deploy fighters.

The Seaweed anti-aircraft cruiser is cheap this turn thanks to Cannala's expense credit from the Grand Prix race, and it too benefits from radar- the AA guns are only effective within visual range, but having an early warning of air attacks lets them position themselves more effectively, to guarantee they get shots in even on fighter groups before they come too close for the large flak guns to be very effective.

There are some other things worth mentioning which don't drastically affect the outcome of this battle. Both sides have discovered the technique of literally "flying under the radar" and made some use of it to disguise the approach of aircraft until they enter visual range, but its utility is limited to aircraft joining a battle which has already started as the same visual range limits their own ability to find ships. The easiest means of finding enemy ships for both sides is scout aircraft. A scout aircraft flying at high altitude on a clear day can visually identify ships (and be visually identified) at the edge of radar range, but will be detected by ships before seeing ships themselves in less than perfect weather. A Wasp Nest carrier has just enough time to scramble all fighters before an enemy aircraft detected by radar gets close. Cannon ranges on both sides are relatively small as ship guns go, which somewhat exacerbates the ability of aircraft carriers to launch an attack from relative safety.

Cannala has a Major Naval Advantage this season. Forenia is once again on their back heel navy-wise.

The Battle for the Jungle:
Attacking: Both
It is still the dry season.

Forenia still has the infantry advantage. To expand upon the topic of radios discussed in the sea battle section, Forenia makes only slightly better use of their radios than the Cannalans. The Forenian Model 3 Radio is less expensive than the Bureaucrat's Lover Radio Set used by Cannala, but both are barely portable, requiring soldiers to stop and set up their radio before making any communication. In the jungle, officers aren't using their only other Expensive equipment option, a rifle scope, very often. After years of use, radio operators of either nation have come to bemoan their equipment- which they typically refer to as something along the lines of "heavy pieces of shit".

Actual tank-on-tank armored combat marginally favors the Forenian AS-T33, but the mobility of the (armed or unarmed) Raider is still a far greater asset. However, you wouldn't know it from hearing how Cannalan commanders complain on the rare occasion they swamp a Marauder. Forenian airborne infantry fill a similar role, but they're less equipped than infantry who ride around in Raiders, who can stash a couple RPGs for when the need arises.

Radar use is very limited in the jungle, effective only elevated clearings above the canopy. These are few and far between, and quickly become desirable locations. An interesting phenomenon is observed, in that if two radar stations point at each other, they are 'visible' to more than twice their effective range for detecting aircraft. It seems that the Deadlier Ray and Eagle Eye both use similar frequencies. This only occurred once this season- both sides successfully mounted strikes against the other's radar position, but the Cannalans were able to quickly replace their trucks while the Forenians' radar building was out of commission for most of the season.

Air combat is largely defined by Stingers and Falcons (the A4-B variant) fighting in equal number. The Falcon is better, but the Forenians have skilled piloting and better communications. It works out to Forenia having an advantage, but not one so great that every bomber gets through, or the Forenian AA guns sit idle. The Forenians' bomber is cheaper, which gives them an important advantage, and one they need since they're begun to see significant bomber losses. The Forenian paratroopers are sometimes shot down or forced to jump early as well. Cannala's SPAAGs are reasonably mobile and effective, and both sides use flak and autocannons. Aside from the bombers which carry large amounts of incendiary bombs and are obviously vulnerable to flak, lot of the air-to-ground fire comes from cheap fighter-bombers right now, and while they carry small payloads, a lot of them simply get through despite fairly modern ground to air defenses.

Cannala's somewhat better radar and cheaper, better planes don't give them an air advantage, but they mitigate Forenia's advantage enough that their more of their Raiders can go do what they need to do.

Cannala gains ground. [Forenia 2/4, Cannala 2/4]

The Battle for the Plains:
Attacking: Forenia

Cannala has established a beachhead, and now Forenia is trying to force them off. The presence of RDN-2 radar sites enables Forenia to keep the Cannalan air force on lock down easily, since Cannalan aircraft are flying all the way from the Archipelago. It makes up for the increased number of A-4B Falcons, but it does little to actually force the Cannalans back. Forenia might be better at battling here, but Cannala still has their naval support.

Forenia does not gain ground. [Cannala 1/3, Forenia 2/3]

The Battle for the Mountains:
Attacking: Cannala

"Commander Sokolov! Listen!" "What is it, Omar?" "It went beep! This thing here-" BEEP "Get ready, they're coming! Start the fighters! How far away is that beep?" "Uh... about 120 clicks, sir." BEEP "Is that another noise it makes?"

Very similar to the fighting on the plains island, the Forenian radar is enough to make the most of their defensive position and overcome the increased number of Cannalan aircraft, while Cannalan intelligence ships don't provide much new intelligence- there's an airstrip on the Forenian island, and Forenian aircraft are going to come from there. Without any drastic changes in the airborne theater, it's a repeat of last season. The Cannalans do not manage to gain ground here. [Forenia 2/2]

Events outside the War:

The Outside World:

The Spanish Civil War has come to an end, with the last of the Republicans surrendering. Italy invades Albania. Hungary wins its war with Slovakia, annexing some territory, and then withdraws itself from the League of Nations. Hitler renounces the Anglo-German naval agreement, (which limited the Kriegsmarine to 35% the total tonnage of the British Royal Navy) and the German-Polish non-aggression pact. Germany and Italy sign the 'Pact of Steel' which includes an open declaration of allegiance and secret, specific military and economic plans. Spain leaves the league of nations. The ship St. Louis is turned away from ports in Cuba and Florida, carrying over 900 Jewish refugees from Germany. They ultimately disembark at Antwerp, Belgium, and many of them end up in countries which may soon be invaded by Germany. The Japanese blockade a British concession in Tianjin, China, nearly starting a war between Britain and Japan.

In America, Marian Anderson, an African-American singer, performs at the Lincoln Memorial after being barred from singing at Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution, who are in charge of organizing events there. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigns from the DAR in protest. Batman makes his first appearance in comics. At the 1939 Worlds Fair, a robot called "Elektro the Moto-Man" is displayed, with the ability to speak 700 pre-recorded words, limited articulation, response to voice commands and a few other "tricks". Pan-American Airlines begins regular air-mail service across the Atlantic ocean.

Alliances:
The Forenians have signed the Anti-Comintern pact, joining the Axis. They have demonstrated and given plans to Germany for the RPG-28A, and Hitler is impressed. While Germany has only just begun experimenting with shaped explosives, here is one on the end of a rocket! Germany will not directly intervene in the ongoing war with Cannala, but may lend material support in the near future. Forenia has gained a Research Credit.

The Cannalans have signed a treaty with America and Britain, agreeing to share support in the event that a war should break out with the Axis. Cannala has demonstrated and shared the Daybreaker Autoloader, which impressed the Allies as a promising technology but was met with some debate over its immediate utility compared to human loaders. While they won't intervene with the ongoing war, they will be more interested in supporting Cannala in defeating Forenia if a war with the Axis breaks out, as Forenia is an Axis supporter. Cannala has gained an Expense Credit.

Local Events:
In Forenia, the parliament is in chaos (more than usual) over the decision of which alliance to join. Even having decided upon the Axis, the nation is still very divided as to what this means. The Nazi Party has (unsurprisingly) gained several seats, but direct opposition has as well. There was a fire in the parliament building, and a new resolution granting the government emergency powers to seek out the saboteur responsible was almost passed before a PAROI (Put A Rocket On It) party member admitted that he caused the fire accidentally. Ultimately an informal resolution is passed declaring that the alliance with the Axis is merely one of mutual benefit and Forenia will not adopt any of the political tenets of fascism, but the National Forenian People's Party insisted on adding an "unless we do" clause. Rioters are at each others' throats more than ever. There has also been some influx of German culture and tourism, and Moskurgs and Arstotzkans alike have come to see German as a common (if foreign) language.

In Cannala, America has pressured El Presidente to hold an election in spite of the current state of war. El Presidente has declined. Unauthorized Spanish translations of Batman became extremely popular for a short time in Cannala, before it was revealed that the treaty which El Presidente signed required Cannala to respect American trademark law. Several lawsuits later, Fruit-Eating Flying Mammal Man is Cannala's favorite superhero.

UFAF-F39-W 'Haast'
The hopefully not misnamed haast is the next generation of Forenia aircraft. It's powered by a brand new supercharged fuel-injected V-12 and makes use of the aerodynamic breakthroughs our car made. Servo and trim tabs on its control surfaces, from our aerodynamics research, allow it to out-manoeuvre enemy fighters even at these high speeds. It's armed with two nose mounted machine guns, four wing mounted 20mm auto cannons and, a carry weight of one metric ton of bombs or torpedoes(the mounts are also used for drop tanks; also while we hope for the carry weight no part of the fighter is to be comprised to meet it.), although the plane is optimized for air-to-air combat. The plane is designed with the pilot's safety in mind and makes use of the a manganese alloy 'bathtub' to prevent pilots from being killed in action. This armored section of the pilots cabin wraps behind, below, and in front of the pilot and is able to withstand hits from 20mm cannons. It also makes use of self-sealing fuel tanks; essentially a rubber shell around the fuel tanks that expands when the internals are exposed to gasoline. Keeping with its "next generation" status the fighter has retractable landing gear, pressurized cabin, full radio system, and oxygen masks with an improved oxygen regulator.  It also features folding wings, which allow for more of them to be stored aboard carriers.

Wow... Well, ok then.

I say we use the design for an amphibious armored transport, and the revision to up gun the archer.

Next turn we design a new fighter, and use a revision to finish the reactive armor.

A lander doesn't help us when we're trying to secure the plains and the jungle.  The Tundra can wait a couple of turns.  The Haast could potentially secure our airpower for the rest of the war, if it rolls well enough.  We should burn the research credit on this, it's ambitious enough to warrant it.

Oh, consider a mangalloy bathtub for the pilot?  Akin to the warthog?  Compressed aluminum for the windshield, even? Nm, that wont be invented for forty more years.

Whoa whoa whoa, no, our air superiority is in danger and that's the biggest linchpin of our entire strategy, waiting a turn to secure it is a very poor idea.

Also, I think that the name I proposed in Discord, Birdeater (it's a bug like our planes and the Cannalan fighters are named after birds) is way better than Haast

I have a very, very drunk stupid suicidal GOYRLIUS design. It is this

The UFAF-SHB-39 Ice Giant
The UFAF-SHB-39 Ice Giant is a massive long range bomber designed to be able to bomb Turbados with a similarly massive payload and return to Forenia with some fuel to spare. The huge aircraft is designed to be as strong as possible to be able to fully take the brunt of even the drunkest of Cannalan pilots attacks. The large aircraft also has six V 18 super turbocharged engines that are water cooled and have self sealing tanks as to make sure that fuel loss isn't an issue if the armor on the engines is penetrated. Its similarly large bomb bay has a bombing sight for the bombardier. Of course, the large craft isn't completely defenseless, it is armed with 12 20mm autocannons, all in 6 ball turrets on the nose, the tail, the top, the bottom, the left, and the right of the aircraft. For obvious reasons, the cabin is compressed so the aircraft can actually fly very high as intended and just as obviously has oxygen masks, retractable landing gear and a radio. The designer of the aircraft was definitely not drunk when making this monstrosity.

After some thought, please remove the bombing from the Haast.  Folding wings is ambitious enough; we want a pure air superiority fighter.  Dedicated roles exists for a reason.

Well, it is time to teach the cannalans that the skies belong to forenia; And nothing their pathetic attempts may achieve can change that. We have a research credit; Let's change the air game.

UF-F-39 "Yastreb"

Yastreb is a dedicated fighter built for one thing and one thing only; To ensure that the skies belong to Forenia and Forenia alone. Equipped with a pressurized cabin for high altitude operations as well as self sealing fuel tanks. The craft is armed with three 20 mm autocannons; Two near the root of the wings, one firing through the engine hub, the centralized placement of the weapons allowing for much greater accuracy than wing mounted weapons. The craft is powered by a powerful supercharged fuel-injected V12 engine, that not only drives the propeller but also a system the Arstozkan engineers call "Motorized Air-Breathing Rocket" A concept originally born off of a race car proposal. This system is essentially a compressor run by the plane's engine that pumps pressurized air into a combustion chamber at the back of the plane where it is mixed with fuel and ignited, giving the plane much greater high-speed performance than purely propeller driven aircraft could hope to achieve.

UF-MA-Ta
UF-MA-Fa
"Cacophonous Pseudonym"

This large, twin-tailed, modular aeroplane can be retrofitted quickly between models and easily incorporates new techologies. The torpedo variant carries three Dolphins and a rear and forward-top turrets using its four heavy engines and expanded wings.
The fighter variant in unspecialised, just utilising more agile wings and adding more guns while losing the top turret and losing cockpit armour.

The modularisation uses four Engine-slots on the wings, with a standardised throttle+equipment+cutoff+restart input using mechanical lines. Hoped to be able to someday mount a 50 litre 18 cylinder radial engine.
There are two cannon-slots in each of the wings and four in the nose, theorised to accept up to a 40mm cannon, but with no ammunition, but designed to operate with a currently-nonexisistent ammunition module. The input consists of firing, unjamming, and a utility toggle for possible options such as changing the firing angle.
Four option slots in each wing with an activate and utility toggle.
Rear and top slots in the wings for wing-deformation modules along with removeable control surfaces.
A top and rear turret slot.
A medium ordnance slot in the underside.
Three heavily reinforced gear-slots in the underside.
Various armour slots, primarily to adjust weight.
Ta-variant:
4 ASW-variant engines, with extra coverings, reinforced propellors, and an extra dosage of heavy grease reserves.
2 AC-18 modules in the nose.
 4 wing-mounted heavy+long blade-floats for extreme-conditions.
Enlarged wings for reduced take-off and stall speeds.
2 AC-18 turrets top and back.
a 1500 kilogram module for deploying torpedoes in sequence.
 Additional underside-mounted blade-floats.
 Armour to taste.
Fa-variant
As above+ 2 additional AC-18s in the wings. One less turrent on the top, no torpedoes, and the wings may be reduced in calm seas.

Also note that there is a top-mounted resupply-hatch for easy refuelling while next to a carrier.

These are designed to take-off from the open sea, in order to support the limited deployment ability of our carriers. They can resupply by landing and swimming next to a carrier and can have no trouble taking-off on calm sease and can generally manage the rougher stuff if they can find a nice wave to fly off of...

Whoa whoa whoa, no, our air superiority is in danger and that's the biggest linchpin of our entire strategy, waiting a turn to secure it is a very poor idea.

I think if we should take anything away from the last few turns, it's that planes will only get us so far while the Cannalans are well on their way to passing us in ground tech, and have long since passed us in naval tech. We need to branch out and keep up in other fields if we're going to stop them from advancing past the jungle and cutting off our fuel supplies. Here's something ambitious, to make the most of the research credit.

UFM-ICC-39A "Heron"
Short for Infantry Combat Carrier, the Heron is a lightly armored, fully tracked vehicle intended to both transport and provide fire support to infantry. It has a flat top and 35mm thick outward-sloping armor and a cabin for a driver and gunner at the front, and a carrying compartment for a squad of infantry plus a small amount of cargo at the back. Rectangular firing ports allow mounted infantry to cover the sides and rear of the vehicle. The gunner has control of an electrically-powered enclosed turret mounting twin-mounted AS-AC18 autocannons as well as a 40mm grenade launcher. It is capable of travelling through calmer waters through use of external hydrodynamically shaped fairings covering the treads, allowing them to produce a jet of water through their normal operation.

The issue, you see, is that we cannot afford to lose our air power, as if we do, we basically are at a massive disadvantage. Air power is our greatest strength it is true, but at the same time it is our greatest weakness.
