I would like to take over the Socialist Party and campaign to join the Comintern eventually. But I'm not sure how to do that. Post propaganda in the Embassy thread?

I'd assume the Embassy thread.  Post commentary by party leaders (got options in the former Arstotzkan Elite Sniper and the former Moskurg spy) on the war, and maybe release a manifesto or two based on Communism.  Honestly, most effective thing for the political side might be to work with others to collectively compile a newspaper dedicated to covering the political situation (ex. People in charge of different parties each make a short intro to a story about their party 'continued' later in the paper.  Could range from interviews to coverage of rallies to general information about who is running for office).

You can always re-use it if a relevant competition comes up.
Also, we don't know how Cannala got that espionage credit. It can't hurt to keep churning out propaganda (not spamming it, but a few pieces here and there)

Anyway, to pass the time, I would like to turn everyones attention to the
Forenian Capitalist Party
Or FCP for short. It is a new party that is gaining members of those of the following Tycoons, Entrepreneurs, Business owners, American immigrants, those against the SFP, those against communism, those for capitalism, those who like efficiency, those who like quality, ECT. It is, as one could quite easily guess, a capitalist party primarily concerned with the economy, employment, and, because of the war, production of arms and armaments, however the reduction of taxes is something that is also important and on the agenda. Naturally, the party supports free trade and are slightly libertarian when it comes to how the government should be run. In short, its what it says on the tin, a party promoting capitalism.


I would say post it here and then get feedback before posting it in the embassy, which is what Im doing here to see what people think of my party.

UFAF-F-39 "Yellowjacket II"
This new aircraft is based on an old Moskurk Yellowjack design and looks rather similar but it benefits tremendously from applying Arstotzka's engineering solutions and war experience. It incorporates all the improvements designed for Stinger as well as reliability solutions tested on Reckless effort. It is better armed going from six Sorraria to 2 AC-18s in the wings and 2 Sorraias in the nose scheme that proved its effectiveness on Stinger.

It is slightly wider and significantly shorter than original Yellowjacket because it's V10 engine is replaced by a new very powerful twin row fourteen cylinder radial engine coming with all usual advancement seen on Florenian aviation engines. Another important upgrade is a pair of three blade contra-rotating propellers that were not inspired by observed wrecks of Cannalan's fighter

F-39s frame has undergone numerous tests in the wind tunnel resulting in optimized shape of wing and tail. The plane is built to be a dedicated carrier-based dogfighter capable to outperform enemy Falcon. Target cost is 3 Ore (2Al), 4 Oil

Twelve pages. You produced an average of twelve pages per day that I was gone. And I read all of it...

Anyway, a few thoughts:
If we want transport capacity, we could revise either our destroyers into fast transports (Destroyer Transports), or our carriers into bigger transports.

As for now, the disadvantage seems to be that their Raiders are far more mobile, being amphibious. It would therefore be good to design something similar.

Anyway, waiting for the battle report.

Battle Report 5: Summer 1939

Forenian SMG's:
The Arstotzkan Nationalist Party has insisted that Forenia begin producing the MC16A SMG instead of the Cascade, which is a Moskurg knockoff. This could matter somewhat if they get into situations where the SMG is necessary to use, but so far the AS-AR34 has been most suitable for common situations.

Island Names:
I intend to go back to the map in the OP and add the new island names onto it. Hopefully I remember.

Design Doctrines:
I'm probably going to go ahead with the 'design doctrines' idea in the last battle report, but not this turn since there's a lot going on with the resource changes.

Thanks to their annexations, Forenia has gained 1 Ore and Cannala has gained one oil.
For Forenia, the AS-T33 Tank and the AS-1931-HAFB Bomber have gone from Very Expensive to Expensive. The B2 Destroyer artillery, AS-MAT26-50 Tank Destroyer, HF-32b Stinger fighter, and Wasp Nest aircraft carrier have all gone from Expensive to Cheap. Dear God.
For Cannala, the Seaweed Anti-Air Cruiser, and Armadillo Tank equipped with the Daybreaker gun have gone from Very Expensive to Expensive. The M1A2 SPAA and the A-2 Spark have gone from Expensive to Cheap.

New Equipment:

This turn, the Forenians built a radar defense network, the RDN 'DEATH RAY'. If it weren't for some American exchange students, Forenia would still be trying to melt airplanes with radio waves rather than see them. It's very crude, an basically consists of a building installation which can detect aircraft in a straight line, but does not know their range or altitude. Only by coordinating (fortunately over Forenia's quite secure channels) between multiple Death Ray installations can the location of enemy aircraft be determined, but it is sufficient to detect incoming enemies well before they reach the shore, leaving ample time to launch interceptors. Despite the immense importance that more sophisticated systems based on this technology may have, possible Forenia's biggest change this turn is their revision: the TPD-38b DOLPHIN torpedo fulfills the vision of the original, it is able to be dropped from aircraft at high speed and hundreds of meters of altitude, and uses a magnetic detonator to explode below the hull of enemy ships, causing maximum flooding while evading topedo belts and mitigating the value of torpedo bulges.

Cannala has spent their design phase on something they are code-naming as "Project Railway". For their revision phase, they have completed the SPAAG as it was originally intended, giving them a 4" autoloading gun on a Raider chassis, with a fuze setter which operates as a function of an altitude dial and the angle of the gun, so altitude only needs to be set once as the gunner follows moving aircraft. Notably, it does not have the Daybreaker's limitation of loading rounds at extreme vertical angles, but it accomplishes this by taking a shape which doesn't fit into a tank turret.

Both nations also built Grand Prix cars, for brevity these will not be added to your equipment list. Details on their design and the outcome of the race will follow the battle report.

The War This Turn:
Both sides have gained resources, and it's the first time in 6 months that the Forenian Air Force is operating without some outside factor hampering activities, so it's really anyone's guess who will win. Well, the Cannalans have guessed they won't win in the north; they're attacking the South and the Center to secure their resource-bearing positions on these fronts. Forenia is attacking the North and South, like usual.

Espionage!
Almost nobody is spying.

The Battle at Sea
This year, Forenia is taking to the seas in true force. Now that the Wasp Nest and its payload, the Stinger fighter and DB-HF-23, are all inexpensive. They're the main offensive force, supported by the Archer which is miserably weak compared to Cannala's ships but also inexpensive. The Cannalan fleet consists of mostly expensive ships, except for the very small Buccaneer Boat which, to its credit, can deliver a lethal Type 48 torpedo. Next up is the Expensive Kalmar, with 6" Nightstorm howitzers, and its support companions the Seaweed Anti-Air Cruiser which packs large flak guns and the Corsair Destroyer, a smaller, faster ship armed with light cannons, but more importantly torpedoes and mines. The crown of the Cannalan fleet is the Khorne, a ship which is heavily armored and armed with a larger number 6" Nightstorm Longbows, an upgraded version of the guns on the Kalmar plus a variety of features to make the guns and crew as efficient as possible.

Air-to-air battles are no contest. Thanks to their carrier presence, Forenia grossly outnumbers Cannala's aircraft in all sea encounters, their Stinger is nearly on par with the more-expensive Falcon and Forenian pilots are better trained.

The Forenians prefer whenever possible to avoid direct combat, and engage by aircraft, and at this they excel. The Cannalans have pretty good AA, they Seaweed Cruisers helps to ward off HAFB bombers, and autocannon defenses shoot down a lot of planes that get too close, but not all of them. The new Dolphin torpedo can be dropped without making aircraft extremely vulnerable. The Dolphin still isn't extremely potent, and DB planes carry them only one at a time, but even so the effect of a few torpedoes hitting a ship is drastic. Mighty Khorne Battleships succumb after several hits (and, after sinking several Archers if they come too close), and much of the Cannalan navy finds it way to the bottom of the sea. A Kalmar or Seaweed cruiser might have its deck hit with multiple bombs, and then be targeted by two or three Archers to bring them down with massed weak and inaccurate cannon fire while the crew is in chaos. Walrus landers are similarly vulnerable, enticing targets.

However, swarthy Cannalan sailors make great use of another one of their ships, the Corsair. It is fast enough that, with an attentive and skilled captain and crew, it can avoid torpedoes which are dropped towards it unless they are very close, and it packs some light AA defenses. It's also small enough that it's rather hard to bomb, except with incendiary cluster bombs which are quite effective- some sort of fire suppression system or switching to a metal deck might be valuable. It's also vulnerable to the Bumblebee guns carried by Forenian Archers. However, thanks only to superior Cannalan seamanship, some do get close to Forenias fleets, and those that do can potentially sink a couple Forenian ships despite their torpedo belts (they often eschew their four Shark launchers for two Type 48 launchers), and lay powerful mines, which Forenian sailors aren't good at dealing with. If they weren't Expensive and vulnerable, though, they would count for more.

Fighting at night is difficult and risky, but Cannalan sailors sometimes run very close to Forenian fleets at night to lay mines, which is a successful tactic.

The DB planes which get relatively close to Cannalan ships have some weaknesses as well; an indirect flak hit has a good chance of injuring the pilot. Some of the very best Forenian pilots are miffed at flying the same plane as new recruits- it used to be earning your HF-32 was a rite of passage! Maybe some planes with a little armor or advanced fuel could be an option.

Cannala has been reduced to a basic Naval Advantage, with Forenian shipping proceeding safely. It's only thanks to their superior seamanship that this is the case.

The Battle for the Jungle:
Attacking: Forenia
The dry season has begun once again, the rivers swell down and the underbrush is comparatively flammable.

Infantry combat hasn't meaningfully changed since the start of the war. Assault rifles are still primary weapons, and in particularly close combat the specialized Cannalan Quickfire Shotgun or Forenian MC-16A SMG. Grenades, including light mortars on both sides and Cannala's grenade launchers, are important weapons- point to Cannala there for a weapon type Forenia doesn't have. However, the old Moskurg flamethrower that Forenia is using is the most important difference here, and the Tiger Armor has limited utility but is still valuable, if its users can avoid being too close to grenades when they go off.

"Chavez! How do you like the new gun back there?" Chavez doesn't respond right away- he's sitting out of his Armadillo's hatch and scanning the road ahead. This tank is leading a convoy of Raiders, and it's the whole crew's job to watch for mines or other traps. "I dunno, man. It's bigger." The driver (his uniform says Ortiego) frowns and looks back at him. "Hey you don't sound very enthusiastic, what about the, the, you know, the slick new automatic thing?" "Well, to be honest, I feel a little... redundant. And cramped. Do we even need a loader anymore?" "Of course we do! Who else fixes it when the claw bit gets stuck?" Chavez looked down at this hands. They were bruised, bandaged in five places, and covered in grease. It wasn't that the Daybreaker really broke down, but it often needed a little help. "Can't Rudi do it?" The gunner looked down. "No way! That thing looks like it could take my finger off!" There were stories of it happening, but Chavez didn't know anyone who had seen it firsthand. "I see. That's how it is, huh?"

Armored combat sees both sides' main battle tanks become Expensive- the Daybreaker variant of the Armadillo for the Cannalans (replacing the non-daybreaker variant for now), and the AS-T33 for the Forenians. Both of these are heavy vehicles which are mostly only vulnerable to each other, or vehicles in the same price category such as the mobile-but-vulnerable Marauder, or very coordinated infantry attacks (something that only happens when their own infantry support drops the ball). The Forenian T2 Breaker has fallen by the wayside, and Cannala's tank destroyers aren't used here. The Raider's water mobility is a point in Cannala's favor- it would be a much bigger point if it could make down-river trips while carrying its turret.

Forenia's air support, once again, takes to causing untold environmental damage and burning out huge sections of the forest canopy with their incendiary cluster bombs, now from Expensive HAFB bombers and Cheap DB's deliver HEAT clusters in great numbers to target Cannalan armor where they can. The Cannalan Air Force isn't badly outnumbered like they were at sea, but they still generally don't stand a chance of getting many A-2's or Warhogs through, at least not compared to the number of Forenian aircraft that reach enemy lines. Reckless Effect transports also drop paratroopers. These paratroopers are wanting for heavy weapons- typical squad loadouts omit an RPG, bring maybe a couple of antitank mines, and have a machine gunner carry an M3 Sorraia while one or two ammo bearers carry belts for the Sorraia while being themselves armed with SMGs. They don't usually bring a radio. Nonetheless, Forenian Airborne Infantry get the job done in terms of greatly disrupting Cannala's operations, stealing One Time Pads and attacking the limited artillery that's used here.

Forenia gains ground, mainly due to their air presence. [Forenia 3/4, Cannala 1/4]

The Battle for the Plains:
Attacking: Cannala

The plains island brings Cannala a significant step closer to the Forenian mainland. The men leading the charge here are glad to be fighting over a beach around a relatively small island for once, instead of spending their time slogging around in the jungle or hunched in a frozen trench. Cannalan air support is initially unaware of the new Forenian radar network- the mere presence of Cannalan aircraft gives the Forenians an idea of where to expect Cannalan attacks ahead of time, and launch aircraft. Most of the season proceeds this way with Cannalans thinking their codes may have been compromised, but eventually they stop sending aircraft altogether, or send them away from the fleet as a diversion. Either way, the status of air combat is even worse than usual for the Cannalans, which is really saying something. If the Cannalans were to attempt night bombings (not that they have much means to do so) this would be a serious problem for them.

Cannalans lead their attack in (unarmed) raiders, trying to clear a safe space for a Walrus to land and deploy an overwhelming number of troops, while a Khorne does its best to shell emplaced weapons that would be a threat. Thanks to the Cannalan naval advantage, it works well enough to grab a chunk of the shore. The Cannalan battleships can only threaten the immediate beaches though, for the most part- moving close to shore to shoot further inland also means coming in range of B2 Destroyer batteries. The rocket-assisted cannon shells are not more powerful than normal shells of their size, can almost meet the range of the cannons on Cannala's ships, and outrange the mortar variety- their only downside is they aren't extremely mobile. The worst damage done to Cannala's beach forces comes from the AS-T33's, which are very hard to kill and smash Raiders that stay in their sight too long with ease, but eventually the ones emplaced on the beach succumb to inevitable direct hits after a while of massed mortar fire.

The Forenian intelligence advantage is still in place, and Cannalan radio communication during combat gives them an idea what to expect.

The Cannalan forces are strong enough on the beach to gain a firm foothold. Next turn they will fight on the beach, with less naval support. [Cannala 1/3, Forenia 2/3]

The Battle for the Tundra:
Attacking: Forenia

Despite an impressive air showing, Forenia just can't regain a beach-head. They lack the appropriate landing craft, and their troops in rowboats (now, I'm giving them this as a free consolation prize, equipped with outboard motors) just get torn to shreds. Their paratroopers do better, but these lightly armed infantry are more of a great addition to a naval assault than the core of it, and without some eventual armor support to back them up, they mostly get captured and sent to labor camps or forced to walk the plank. Cannala will have access to the Titanium here next turn, although they don't currently use any. They may also name this island.

The Battle for the Mountains:
Attacking: Cannala

Like on the Forest Island, Cannala gets ships through to the shore despite a lot of losses from Forenian air attacks. Their ships just come in great numbers. Unlike on the plains island, there is little space for armor to advance and a lot of height advantage for the defending Forenians, who use snipers, light mortars and GPMGs to their advantage, spread out and in cover which makes them difficult to shell. The Forenian radar system and intelligence advantage is very valuable in concentration these disparate defenses against attack. The Cannalans do not manage to gain ground here. [Forenia 2/2]

Events outside the War:

The Outside World:

Naturwissenschaften, the German magazine Science of Nature, publishes a paper on Otto Hahn's successful nuclear fission. The German Abwehr "leaks" misinformation that an invasion of the Netherlands followed by Britain using captured airfields there, this causes Britain to commit soldiers to defending France. Hungary joins the anti-comintern pact. The United States Supreme court outlaws "sit-down strikes", in which workers sit at their station preventing anyone else from working there. Nazi Germany siezes land from Lithuania, and Britain announces a policy to prevent attempts at "world domination" from Germany. A war is beginning to seem inevitable.

Local Events:
"Wands Race" author Raafat Al-Hayim has once again become the subject of controversy. In his book series, the Moskurgs have begun winning their magical war with the Arstotzkans. The Arstotzkan nationalist Party has started a petition and asked all of their readers to send letters to Raafat, arguing that the Arstotzkans should be winning the fictitious war, both based on the logic of the in-universe magic and general ideological principles which involve Arstotzka being better. After receiving what he called an "exhausting" amount of letters, Raafat ultimately capitulated and agreed that Arstotzkan plant magic would be more powerful for the next book in the series.

In Cannala, tragedy strikes as Joachim Cassolo is found dead in his apartment. "Although we often disagreed on political matters," said El Presidente, "I respected him very much. His contribution to this nation and strive to maintain fair elections, and most of all his campaign for the best possible treatment of the Juraki, will be missed." Joachim's death is believed to be a suicide, he shot himself twice in the chest. At his funeral, El Presidente had a special batch of rum served, made with a new brewing technique intended to make a good drink out of Red Rot-afflicted sugarcane. Everyone in attendance agreed that it was terrible.

Grand Prix:
Both nations have built a car for the Grand Prix. They both have some forward-thinking unconventional aerodynamic features to keep them from flying off the ground. The Cannalan car is a diesel with a staged turbo and a bunch of fancy handling features. It's also a rear engine.

El Diablo V8'39 Racing Car: Cannala's Grand Prix entry, the Diablo, packs as many state of the art handling features in as possible to manage its V8 turbo diesel. The car incorporates sway bars, a hydraulic power steering system, and inverted wings for downforce- the wings are 10-inch sections from the base of actual Falcon wings, bolted to the side of the body. Furthering the aircraft appearance is a curved glass canopy over the driver. It's a rear engine, so the driver's canopy in front gives the whole car a teardrop shape. The motor is a curious choice, there is a two-stage turbo system which provides much earlier boost than a normal turbo but the choice of a diesel engine still means the car doesn't exactly jump off the line, despite being quite powerful. The oil radiator is in the front of the car, connected by long uses, and pumping the large amount of oil involved uses up some power. The car also features run-flat tires with a cork core, which are useful per se but aren't really a logical feature for a race car. Aside from its front engine configuration and wings, it's shaped like a conventional race car, long and narrow with narrow open wheels.

The Forenian car is an aero-engined car, with the large and powerful Stinger motor. It has an unusual wedge shape for aerodynamics, plus a "spoiler", and it saves some weight with aluminum construction, but that only partly makes up for the fact that the engine is just huge.

UFC-RC-1939 'Glorious': The Forenian race car entry is built around the large, powerful HF-32 engine, a turbocharged V10. As an aircraft engine, it is simply huge for a car. Its weight and the fact that it's tuned to run close to maximum RPM all the time, as well as the choice of turbo for forced induction, mean that it is slow off the line despite giving lots of power when the car is up to speed. The car is built from aluminum, and the body is an unusual shape. Observation in a wind tunnel determined that the tops of the wheels were a source of a large amount of drag, so they are covered in cowls. The front of most cars is nearly flat, but this one comes down to a wedge with a front wing, to hold the front steering wheels down. This wedge shape actually created some lift as more air is moved towards the top, and this top air is moving faster, so a small tail is added sticking up from the rear of the body and "spoil" the air flow there. It has narrow tires like most cars, and sits on the classic Arstotzkan hydro suspension.

The Race:
The checkered flag goes down, and the cars are off! The first cars to take the lead from the starting line are a French and Italian car, both using superchargers. The Forenian car arguable has more power than grip to its rear drive wheels, it smokes it tires for the entire first hundred meters. The Cannalan car gets its boost early and pulls ahead, just behind an ultra-light three wheeled car (with two wheels in the front) from Britain. By the end of the first, long straightaway, The Forenian car is nearly in front and the Cannalan one has fallen behind a bit. Most of the pack slows down for the first corner, a large section of a traffic circle which constitutes a fairly tight turn for the preceding straight.

To the surprise of other drivers, the Forenian and Cannalan cars both pull ahead, trusting their advanced aerodynamics to help them take the corner faster than ever before. The Cannalan car whisks around the corner, rumbling over the cobblestones with relative ease, taking the lead. The Forenian car doesn't do as well- its front engine and front wing put lots of grip on its front wheels, and it dramatically oversteers. The Forenian driver wrestles to car away from the wall, but is left in a cloud of tire smoke having lost of his speed as the pack passes him. The race continues this way- the Forenian car blows ahead on the straights, but its significant and imbalanced weight forces the driver to slow down a lot for corners. The Cannalan car isn't as fast as some of the other ones, but its able to keep a more consistent speed. Eventually the Cannalan car takes the trophy. The various lesser foreign diplomats who succeeded in getting themselves assigned to this race instead of more important work are impressed- the Cannalan driver is reported in the newspapers as "a sailor who won a car race using an airplane". Cannala gains an expense credit.

Alliances:
As it begins clear that the world will be entering a war, it would be wise to choose a military alliance. They will offer small benefits now, but greater ones as the situation becomes more urgent. All of them might like to see Cannala or Forenia as an ally, preferably at peace and contributing resources. Both of your nations may attempt to court an alliance, offering any one design. However only one nation may win each alliance, if you try to make the same alliance your previous actions and current weapon contribution will consider. Each one comes with a small immediate reward:
Join the Allies to earn an expense credit, as some parts of your equipment is made in American factories.
Join the Axis to earn a research credit from Germany's scientists.
Join Comintern to gain an espionage credit from Russia's intelligence agency.

Hey, guys I am sure that their Project Railway is either a jet fighter or large aircraft carrier. I think we must to go for a new fighter to negate this threat before it comes into the play.

We also need a landing ship. We have a chance to get back the tundra.

I would not be opposed to a fighter as our design, we are missing one in the expensive level. Although, there are many proposals around.

We should build a better bomber.  1000 kg load for multiple torps, folding wings, pilot armor.  Then we should either upgrade our paratroopers or throw the revision into the radar systems.

Either a new multi-role torpedo/dive bomber, or a level-flight carpet bomber.  Landing ship can wait a turn, because unless we go after the tundra we wont have a use for it now.

Also, I feel for poor Raafat.
